Hilo native BJ Penn favored in tough UFC 107 match

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Fans of mixed martial arts on the Big Island of Hawaii are anxiously awaiting the UFC 107 lightweight title main event between Hilo's BJ Penn and Diego "Nightmare" Sanchez on Saturday evening.

By 1:00 pm on Saturday, odds makers had champion Penn over Sanchez at -280.

The pay per view fight, being held in Memphis, Tennessee is expected to be seen around 7 pm Hawaii time. Loyal fans will no doubt pack the Penn Training and Fitness Center in The Prodigy's home town of Hilo to watch the fight, where a $5 donation to the BJ Penn Youth Foundation gets fans in the door.

Although the fans will be watching the bout in the very gym where the lightweight champion normally trains, BJ Penn has actually been training in San Clemente, California in recent weeks. Penn, whose regimen under Marv Marinovich was an apparent success in his victory over Kenny Florian in August, hopes the training will help him against the aggressive, tireless attack of Sanchez. Before leaving for the mainland to begin the training, Mayor Billy Kenoi declared BJ Penn Day on Hawaii Island in support of the Hilo native.

The two warriors will meet at 155 pounds, a weight where both man are dominant. Hawaii Tribune-Herald writer John Burnett reports that the 31 year old Penn has not lost a fight at 155 pounds in more than seven years. Meanwhile, the soon to be 29 year old Sanchez has never lost at 155 pounds.

This video, produced by MMA Weekly Videos and shared courtesy YouTube, shows an interview with Penn at the recent Pre-fight weigh in.

A man of two schools: Missoula's Jack Wade attended both App State and UM

Posted by DAREDEVIL

The last time Appalachian State University came to Missoula for a football playoff game, Jack Wade pulled a Mountaineers sweatshirt over his head and ventured – either bravely or foolishly, he’s not sure which – into Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

It was 2000, and the loyalties of Wade – a 1996 Appalachian State graduate who came to Missoula to attend graduate school at the University of Montana – were firmly entrenched with his alma mater back then.

“I’d only been here a couple of years,” he explains.

Now, nearly a decade later, the Mountaineers return to face Montana on Saturday with another berth in the national championship on the line, and Wade with a wardrobe decision to make.

“I may have an Appalachian State T-shirt on,” admits Wade, a broker with Lambros Real Estate, “but if I do, it’ll be under a Grizzly jacket. I’ve grown to be a bigger Griz fan over the years.”

The Dec. 9, 2000 game – the only time Montana and Appalachian State have ever met before – was a classic between schools that would come to own the pre-eminent FCS programs by the end of the decade.

The Mountaineers rallied from a 13-3 deficit in the fourth quarter to send it into overtime, where Montana quarterback Drew Miller’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Farris propelled the Grizzlies into the 2000 national title game with a 19-16 victory.

“Everyone talks about Drew Miller throwing the winning touchdown in overtime,” Wade says, “but what I remember was Appalachian State throwing (what would have been) the winning touchdown, and (Montana’s) cornerback knocking it down in the end zone.”

That came with about 20 seconds to play in regulation, and Appalachian State threatening from the Grizzlies’ 8 yard line. The Mountaineers settled for a tying field goal, got the ball first in OT, and took their first lead of the day at 16-13 on another Mark Wright field goal.

Miller’s pass to Farris followed.

“It was a riot that day,” Wade says. “I was in my Appalachian State sweatshirt, and I almost got my butt kicked several times.”

Wade attended the 2000 game with a friend from Appalachian State who also made her way west to Missoula for graduate school, Elizabeth Fricke. The two dated during their days at Appalachian State, Wade says, and have remained friends during their years in Missoula.

“In fact,” he says, “I introduced her to her eventual husband.”

Wade and Fricke are two of 72 Appalachian State graduates between 1969 and 2008 who now make their homes in Montana, according to the Appalachian State Alumni Office.

Fricke, who admits she’s not much of a football fan, period, remembers the last game mostly for the people from Boone she ran into who she knew.

“I went over to where our fans were sitting,” says the Boone native, “and I thought it was so funny that I knew people. But Boone is a small town.”

Fricke, now UM’s Outdoor Program manager, won’t be at Saturday’s game. She has an avalanche transceiver course to teach.

“But the class is on campus, so I’m sure we’ll hear the game,” she says. “I just think it’s neat that my hometown is coming to Missoula again.”

While she wasn’t much for attending Mountaineers games when she lived in Boone, and doesn’t frequent Grizzly games in Missoula, Fricke says it’s impossible to live in either place and not be well aware of what’s going on with their respective football teams.

“Whether you go to the games or not,” she says, “it’s what everybody all around you is talking about all the time.”

Wade, meantime, is a native of Buffalo, N.Y., who stumbled on Boone and Appalachian State after joining the Navy after high school.

“I was stationed in Virginia, I liked the mountains, and I ended up going to Boone a lot,” he says. “Boone is an amazing place. I really liked it, and liked all the outdoor opportunities there.”

Wade worked with the Outward Bound program while at Appalachian State and served on the ski patrol at nearby Sugar Mountain Ski Resort. When he went looking for a graduate school, outdoor opportunities were probably more important to him than the school itself, and Missoula was an easy choice.

He worked the ski patrol at Montana Snowbowl during the winters, and returned to North Carolina in the summers to work for Outward Bound while he pursued a master’s at UM in environmental studies that didn’t happen.

“My hard drive melted before I’d finished my thesis,” Wade says, “and by that time I knew I’d be going into a different field anyway, so I didn’t finish it.”

Missoula – and the Grizzlies – have turned him into much more of a football fan than he was the last time Appalachian State came to town, Wade says.

His four years in the Navy coincided with the Buffalo Bills’ four consecutive Super Bowl appearances, so he wasn’t around his hometown to get caught up in that. And the Mountaineers weren’t quite as successful when he was in college as they are now, so game days weren’t always must-goes.

“My love of football has blossomed since then,” says Wade, who is not a Grizzly season-ticket holder but does attend three to four games a year.

“I’m grateful, I have business partners and friends who do have season tickets, and I always seem to get to go to a few games,” he says. “I’ve taken my 3-year-old son, Avery, and have pictures of him waving at the jets flying overhead. He just loves it.”

Like Wade, Avery has Appalachian State as well as Grizzly gear to wear. Dad remains an ASU alum, after all, and Wade’s made sure his boss at Lambros, Dan Worrell – the Grizzlies’ kicker from 1968-70 – has seen Avery in it.

But unlike 2000, Wade will be pulling for the Grizzlies on Saturday, although he’s excited to see Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards in action, too.

“I think the Grizzlies, in their last few games, have really raised hopes around here,” he says, “and it’s going to be a treat to see Edwards play. I guess this is probably the first game I’ll have ever been to where I’m guaranteed not to be totally upset at the end, no matter what happens.”

Prairie View rallies past 'Bama A&M for SWAC title

Posted by DAREDEVIL

K.J. Black threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns, two coming in the fourth quarter, and the Panthers ralllied for a 30-24 win over Alabama A&M in the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game on Saturday.

"It's been a long time coming," said Prairie View coach Henry Frazier III. "Nobody on this staff, nobody on this team was born in 1964. This is a special time."

Frazier is the one most responsible for turning around a program that gained notoriety during the 1990s by losing 80 consecutive games.

"It's a special occasion," Frazier added. "I'm very proud of this football team."

Alabama A&M (7-5) led 21-17 early in the fourth quarter before a 23-yard touchdown pass from Black to Gabe Osaze-Ediae put Prairie View (9-1) ahead 23-17 with 11:21 to play.

Moments later, Alabama A&M quarterback Deaunte Mason lost the ball following a hit by Prairie View's Anthony Peck, and Quinton Spears made his second fumble recovery of the game for the Panthers. Black then connected with Anthony Weeden for a 22-yard touchdown pass and a 30-21 lead with 7 minutes remaining, and the Panthers held on from there.

"All anybody was talking about this year was a championship," Black said. "When you can see that in somebody's eyes and you know everybody is striving for the same goal, it makes you want to work that much harder. That collective effort got us to where we are right now."

The game lasted nearly 4 hours, thanks in part to 22 penalties and several replay reviews.

Alabama A&M had a long second-quarter touchdown pass wiped out by a holding penalty, and a late fourth-quarter TD toss overturned by the replay official, who ruled that receiver Quintin Carlock bobbled the ball and did not maintain possession in the end zone.

"Anytime you take seven points off the board, it's huge," said Alabama A&M coach Anthony Jones. "You're frustrated. Every time you got a big play, it was called back. Those were significant moments in this football game. And obviously, we could not overcome them."

The teams exchanged the lead six times in the game, and neither team led by more than four until Prairie View pulled away in the fourth quarter.

"It was a great football game on both sides," Frazier said. "We both made adjustments, we both countered. It was chess match out there. Both teams played extremely hard, and it came down to the last play. That's what you want in a championship game."

Osaze-Ediae had seven receptions for 106 yards, and Weeden had four catches for 82 yards. Donald Barbers led Prairie View on the ground with 78 yards and a touchdown.

The Bulldogs' Mason passed for 154 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 110 yards and another score. Tailback Ulysses Banks added 109 yards rushing and a touchdown.

It was the fourth SWAC championship game loss in the past 10 years for Alabama A&M, whose lone conference title during that span occurred in 2006.

The original dysfunctional family

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Dec. 11--For most, the holidays are a time of joy in which we re-connect and bond with loved ones. The holidays also remind some of us why we only spend one day a year with our mothers, brothers and sisters with their passive favoritism, staunch political views, painful noogie techniques and uneventful on-the-job stories that drag on and on and on.

Even in the middle ages, in days of kings, queens and wars won by sword, family gatherings weren't much different. Robidoux Resident Theatre's upcoming production of "The Lion in Winter" sets out to prove this point.

"We all have to go to these family functions this time of year and wonder how we get messed up with these people we call family, and this group makes you feel so much better about your family because no one is more dysfunctional than they are," says play director and RRT business manager Jeff Haney.

Set on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day of 1183, "The Lion in Winter" follows King Henry II, Queen Eleanor and their three sons, who are vying for the privilege of being named heir to the English throne. And while the kindred battle for the kingdom looms, Henry's affection for his mistress grows.

As if the growing tension wasn't enough, every family member contributes to the drama with their imperfections. Henry flies by the seat of his pants. Eleanor is greatly manipulative. Richard the Lionheart is a ticking time bomb. Jeffrey is cold and scheming. And John is the spoiled brat of the bunch.

The seven-person cast of Tad Hopkins, Joyce Stohr, Kenna Hall, Rylan Swank, Jeff Landers, Jonathan McClain and Jeremy White appears ready and willing to take on the double-crossing, alliance-shifting roles.

"It's a really nice role in my case for an older woman. Not aged, just older," laughs Stohr, who plays Eleanor. "I thought it was a real bounty to tackle something with that range of emotion."

Henry and Eleanor's relationship anchors the play, largely due to the dynamic between the two vastly different characters.

At 50 years old, Henry knows death is near in his day and age. Therefore, he acts with spontaneity and emotion.

"My character has a great deal of charm, but he's also very dishonest, so I do feel there's a lot to like about him, but equally as much to dislike," says Tad Hopkins, who plays Henry.

Meanwhile, Eleanor is a strong and loving woman who once stole the heart of Henry, a man 11 years her junior.

"Even in 1183, she was one of the first cougars," Haney laughs.

After being imprisoned for 10 years, however, Henry has grown fond of his mistress Alais, and now Eleanor fears she is the other woman. Hmm... this almost sounds like an episode of "Sex and the City."

"Sex and power is a fascinating subject," Haney says. "Sex drives all of us, even the most powerful people in the world are driven by it. You know, we could bring up Tiger (Woods) right now. It defines us."

Although the play uses actual historical figures as characters, the drama and dialogue are fictitious and, more importantly, modern. The play was written in the mid-1960s by James Goldman and adapted for a film starring Katharine Hepburn and Peter O' Toole in 1968. So no Old English here. Just present-day wit and drama.

"There's so much about this play that's clever and it asks the audience to think as well as feel," Stohr says. "For people who like clever, witty pieces, this is going to be something they will find a real treat."

"The Lion in Winter" also examines war and finds that it is often the emotional leaders more than political policy that dictate it.

"There are lines in the play where you can tell these kings are just barbarians," Hopkins says.

While the play wavers between drama, intrigue and humor, one thing always remains the same: The egos of the characters. Haney says that is what has made "The Lion in Winter" such a fascinating classic.

"People can't possibly say those things to each other and do those things to each other. It's a big play with big characters," Haney says. "And that's why I wanted the set to be so big. I wanted 20-foot columns. Everything's big because there's nothing small about them."

Army Navy Game Finishes Army's Bowl Hopes

Posted by DAREDEVIL

It is storied rivalry, perhaps the most storied rivalry in NCAA sports. It is the Army - Navy game, specifically in football, and it has a long history which, because the two teams are no longer relevant on a national level, is more important to the two schools and branches of the military than anyone else. Still, the 2009 Army - Navy game had Army on the cusp of a bowl bid, at least for 60 minutes.

In the 2009 game, once again Navy defeated Army's Black Knights. By doing so, it ended Army's hopes for a bowl bid. The Midshipmen now have an eight-game winning streak in the Army - Navy game series, in fact, and at 9-4 already have a postseason date against Missouri in the Texas Bowl on Dec. 31.

Meanwhile, Army entered the Army - Navy game hoping to finish the season at .500 and 6-6, but failing that, with a loss ended at 5-7. They would have played in the EagleBank Bowl with a win. That bowl is now filled with Temple vs. UCLA at RFK Stadium in Washington on Dec. 29.

This time the Army - Navy game ended with a 17-3 win for Navy.
Ricky Dobbs ran for a score to set an NCAA single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 24. He also threw a TD pass, helping Navy improve to 54-49-7 overall against Army. This is the biggest lead for Navy in a series that began in 1890.

Ricky Dobbs had been in a three-way tie for rushing TDs by a quarterback. He had been even with Air Force’s Chance Harridge (2002) and Florida’s Tim Tebow (2007, his Heisman Trophy year).

Navy has won a service academy-record 15 consecutive games against Army and Air Force. Navy’s last loss to a service academy was against Air Force in 2002.

The 2009 Army - Navy game wasn't as easy as it sounds or as the records might indicate. Army actually led 3-0 at halftime. It was the first time Army led at halftime in the series since 2001. It was also the first time Navy was shutout in the first half of the series since 1993. Finally, it the first time Army led against Navy since the first quarter of the 2006 game.

The Army - Navy game win gave Navy the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy. That is awarded to the team with the best record in games between the three service academies. This is a school-record seventh straight year that Navy has won the trophy.

Heisman Trophy Presentation 2009 Has Higher Drama Than Usual

Posted by DAREDEVIL

The Heisman Trophy presentation 2009 is hours away, as the Downtown Athletic Club crowns a new legend. But the Heisman Trophy presentation 2009 could go to any one of five budding legends, presumably. Some nominees are bigger favorites than most, and this award isn't usually prone to

upsets. However, it is a relatively wide open field at the Heisman Trophy presentation this year, as befitting this wide open 2009 season.

If there is a favorite tonight, it is probably Alabama's Mark Ingram. That is due in part to leading the No. 1 team in the nation, to his big performance against Florida last week - and since Alabama may be due for a Heisman Trophy. The Tide are highly decorated, but have never had the best player in the nation in a given year. Ingram is their best hope in a long time to change that.

If star power means anything at the Heisman Trophy presentation, then Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow are favored. In any other circumstances, they might be, since McCoy is due for a Heisman and Tebow is still trying to win two. But Tebow all but killed his chances last week, and McCoy was a second away from destroying his as well. However, McCoy was regarded as the favorite before last week, and took home many College Football Awards on Thursday, so he still has a shot.

The dark horse in the race may be Stanford's Toby Gerhart, the second running back in the race. Gerhart didn't lead his team to a BCS title shot, but carried them on his back to a rare winning season. If the 2009 Heisman race is for the most valuable player to a team, then Gerhart may have a leg up.

But the most electrifying figure at the 2009 Heisman Trophy presentation may be a late contender. Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh has been the best defensive player in years, but had his national coming-out party against Texas last week. That has fueled the call for Suh to win, even though defensive tackles almost never win the award.

Save the Navy Seals

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Save the Navy Seals is one of these campaigns that seems emtirely valid on the face of it but then fails when the details are examined. The basic facts of the case are well explained by my colleague.

According to multiple reports, three United States Navy SEALs have been charged in connection with an alleged assault on a suspected terrorist. The three SEALs have requested trial by court-martial instead of non-judicial punishment (NJP).

That's the facts as they are. The allegations are that while arresting an alleged terrorist (supposedly responsible for the murders of those four Blackwater employees) they either punched the arrestee in the mouth or abdomen. The Save the Navy Seals campaign is arguing that they should not be tried for these actions. Heres Rep. Dan Burton arguing this point.

Here's Michelle Malkin on the subject:

Human Events has posted a petition to free the Navy SEALs who’ve been hauled up for court martials after an infamous jihadi in Iraq (the same one who masterminded the ambush of Blackwater contractors whose bodies were burned and hung on a bridge in Fallujah) accused them of punching him in the stomach during a raid earlier this fall.

Sadly there's a desperate misunderstanding of the case going on here. Let us start from the beginning.

Allegations are made: that the Navy Seals broke the law while arresting this man.

This leads us to two further things. We would like to know whether they did in fact break the law. For having agents of the State being allowed to beat us up with no proof....well, that's actually one of the things that the American Revolution was all about in the first place.

But much, much more important than that is this. Allegations have been made. So, how do those Navy Seals clear their names? How do they show that the allegations are not true? Or that their actions were justifiable? We have a system to do this. It's called a trial.

Don't forget, the point of a trial (whether it's a civilian one or a military court martial) is not simply to identify the guilty (and then to punish them). It's also, and hugely more importantly so, to identify the innocent.

How can these Navy Seals show that they did not break the law when arresting this man? By us shouting that they should not be tried? No, absolutely not. Only by their being tried and then being found not guilty. That is the way that our society formally states: you did not do this, you did not break the law.

All of which is, of course, precisely why those Navy Seals have asked for a trial, so that they can show themselves to be not guilty. So to argue that they should not have their day in court, where they can prove their innocence, seems very odd indeed really. Give them what they have asked for, a trial so they can clear their names.

Griz beat Appalachian State 24-17, advance to national championship

Posted by DAREDEVIL

The third-ranked Montana Grizzlies downed fifth-ranked Appalachian State 24-17 an an FCS semifinal playoff game on Saturday at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

The Griz (14-0) will face Villanova in Friday's FCS championship in Chattanooga, Tenn. The game will be televised by ESPN2 at 6 p.m. It will be Montana's sixth trip to the title game. The Griz came home with the national championship in 1995 and 2001.

The Griz struck first on a 39-yard TD burst by Chase Reynolds. After stopping the Mountaineers on fourth-and-5, the Griz drove 63 yards in seven plays to take the lead with 7:50 to play in the opening quarter.

Appalachian State, which finished its season at 11-3, tied the game at 7-7 by putting together an eight-play, 80-yard scoring drive early in the second quarter. Under heavy pressure, App State quarterback Armanti Edwards got the ball to Brian Quick for a 34-yard gain to the UM 3-yard line. Devon Moore got the final 3 yards for the score.

Appalachian State took a 10-7 lead on a 46-yard field goal by Jason Vitaris with 5:16 to play before intermission. The field goal capped a 10-play, penalty-plagued drive.

Montana's first drive of the second half was all Reynolds. The Drummond product caught a swing pass for 24 yards and rushed for 24 more, getting the final 7 yards for the TD to put Montana ahead 14-10 with 13:22 to play in the third quarter.

The Mountaineers went back ahead following an interception by Jacque Roman, who returned the ball to the 50-yard line. Appalachian used nine plays to move 50 yards, capped by 1-yard run by Moore to put the Mountaineers on top 17-14 with 3:52 to play in the third quarter.

The Griz came right back to tie the game at 17-17 on a 32-yard field goal by Brody McKnight. Behind the hard running of Reynolds, the Griz drove the ball 61 yards before stalling on the App State 15-yard line.

After holding App State to a failed field goal attempt, the Griz drove 73 yards, capped by a 25-yard scoring pass from Selle to Jabin Sambrano to take a 24-17 lead with 1:30 to play. Sambrano made a spectacular grab along the sideline in the end zone.

App State's final drive ended on the UM 4-yard line. With one second left, Edwards threw to Quick, but the pass was broken up in the end zone by Trumaine Johnson.

Gill appears to be Kansas' choice as head coach

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Buffalo coach and former Nebraska quarterback Turner Gill appears to be the choice as the new coach at Kansas.

ESPN.com's Joe Schad is reporting that two sources briefed on the situation have said that Gill is the choice to replace Mark Mangino.

Gill has appeared to be the favorite for the job since Mangino resigned on Dec. 3.

In a lot of ways, Gill appears to be a 180-degree departure from Mangino, whose coaching and discipline tactics were blasted by several former and current players.

Gill has the reputation of being a popular coach among players. His daughter, Jordan, is a Kansas student who works in the athletic department offices.

His career record is 20-30 in a four-season stint as Buffalo's head coach. Gill directed the Bulls to the International Bowl last season, but Buffalo missed a bowl trip in a 5-7 season in 2009.

Earlier, he served as an assistant coach at Nebraska from 1992-2004 and with the Green Bay Packers in 2005.

The former Nebraska player has a lot of name recognition that resonates throughout the Big 12 area.

The fact he grew up in Fort Worth and has some existing connections with Texas high-school coaches will be critical in his attempts to build his program. Mangino did a good job of attracting under-recruiting prospects from Texas like Todd Reesing, Dezmon Briscoe and Maxwell Onyegbule.

Gill will have to do that and more as he attempts to match Mangino's record of notching back-to-back bowl trips in 2007 and 2008 for the first time in school history.

It will be a tough chore with Bo Pelini having his alma mater pointed in the right direction at Nebraska. Arch-rival Missouri appears to be in good shape with Blaine Gabbert as the quarterback for the next two seasons.

She claims,

"Sometimes I looked like a rag doll after we'd made love," she told the paper. "He really did like it quite rough. He wanted to spank me and loved pulling my hair as we had sex. He also liked me to talk dirty to him, but hair-pulling was what really turned him on. All he wanted me for was sex," and said he was "a selfish, heartless man. why are we obsessed to see pictures of the women he had affairs with? Because his life is interesting and our lives are boring? Or is it that our lives are better than his at this moment in time?

yes he is a snake who can get a hole in one both on and off the field...

EJ Henderson Broken Leg injury (VIDEO) is trouble for Vikings

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Another NFL pro football player has suffered a devastating injury on the field. On Sunday it was Minnesota Vikings EJ Henderson's broken leg injury that has caused concerned for many Vikings fans.

The play came on a 2nd and 6, with the Arizona Cardinals Tim Hightower rushing the ball for a gain. EJ Henderson was among the players on defense trying to take him down. While it wasn't immediately seen on the play, Henderson was down, and required a cart be brought out to take him back for medical exams. Erin Henderson, EJ's brother, and an inactive member of the Vikings team, was there to comfort his brother as they took him back. Quarterback Brett Favre was shown visibly upset by the injury to his team's defense.

According to the Minnesota Vikings website, Henderson suffered a broken leg, after twisting his leg ackwardly trying to tackle Tim Hightower. This is the second straight year Henderson has suffered a season-ending injury, with the defensive player suffering a toe injury last season.

The Cardinals who were runners-up in last year's Superbowl, ended up winning the game 30-17. The Vikings still lead their division with a record of 10-2, despite the loss and will try to bounce back versus the Cincinatti Bengals (9-3) next week.

Pearl Harbor Day - December 7 1941

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Pearl Harbor Day happened on December 7, 1941. Sixty-eight years later we still remember Pearl Harbor Day and the events of December 7, 1941. My husband's father fought in World War II, which inspired my husband to join the Marines and fight in Vietnam.

Pearl Harbor Day remembers Operation Z or the Hawaii Operation, its name according to Japanese Imperial General Headquarters. On the morning of December 7, 1941, a surprise military strike was conducted by the Japanese navy against the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Today we solemnly remember the events of Pearl Harbor Day.

The Pearl Harbor Day attack was meant to be preventative and keep the US out of the war. Two aerial attach waves were launched by the Japanese. Four US Navy battleships were sunk. Four more battleships were damaged. Two were later raised and returned to serve in the war.

After the Pearl Harbor Day attack, Wikipedia reports the US damages included three destroyers, three cruisers, 188 aircraft with 2,402 killed and 1,282 wounded. Losses for the Japanese were minimal including 29 aircraft, 5 midget submarines, 1 soldier captured and 65 servicemen wounded or killed.

As a result of the events on December 7, 1941, the US became militarily involved in World War II. The Pearl Harbor Day attack happened before Japan made a formal declaration of war. Because of the surprise attack, the US went from isolationist to supporting direct participation in World War II.

US President Franklin D. Roosevelt stated, “December 7th, 1941 – a date which will live in infamy.”

On the Japanese side, Admiral Hara Tadaichi said, “We won a great tactical victory at Pearl Harbor and thereby lost the war.”

I extend my sincere thanks to all the veterans who served in World War II and protected our freedom. Pearl Harbor Day and the events of December 7, 1941 remind us of the possibility of surprise attacks.

Today the USS Arizona Memorial is a place to remember Pearl Harbor Day and visit the final resting place of many of the 1177 crew members of the battleship who lost their lives on December 7, 1941.

Bryant Gumbel in the race to get Tiger Woods interview

Posted by DAREDEVIL

New York City, Dec 7 (THAINDIAN NEWS) With a full-fledged affairs scandal behind Tiger Woods, he is hiding from the media and has only released one official statement so far. Even though a few new mistresses pop up all day. The media is hounding for sound bytes but the Tiger Woods camp is simply not approachable. Oprah, ESPN, Golf Channel are all scouting for his interview and in this interview race Bryant Gumbel is also present.

Bryant Gumbel has a show ‘Real Sports’ on HBO. Many people have come on this show to reveal their innermost secrets too. Like former NFL player Esera Tuaolo who came on this show to spill the beans about his sexual orientation as a gay on Bryant Gumbel’s show ‘Real Sports’ on HBO.

Many talk show hosts have approached Tiger Woods to come clean on their show and tell his side of the story. As there has been no denial and no confirmation of the numerous mistress’s stories, so there is more to it than meets the eye. Some of the claims could well be false too. Perhaps they were made with the intention of getting some good amount from the gossip hungry tabloids that are ready to pay these self-proclaimed mistresses to get a sizzling story.

According to reports, Oprah also tried to contact Tiger Woods to appear on her show so that so tell the whole world the absolute truth and put all speculations to rest too. Some other golf players have also asked Tiger Woods to come clean on Oprah’s show and then focus on his game.

Zhu Zhu Pets Unsafe

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Are Zhu Zhu Pets unsafe? With Zhu Zhu Pets unsafe rumors flying, we recently explored Zhu Zhu Pets Play Hard to Get, Zhu Zhu Pets Toxic, Zhu Zhu Pets Recall and Antimony. With Zhu Zhu Pets unsafe thoughts in mind, let's look for the truth amidst the hype.

Zhu Zhu Pets are robotic hamsters. They are like the real thing only you don't have to actually feed them or clean up after them. Zhu Zhu Pets unsafe rumors are based on the materials used to make the toys rather than the psychological ramifications. What do you think of children playing with robots rather than real live critters?

Zhu Zhu Pets unsafe statements also have nothing to do with the trend factor involved. Every year there seems to be “must have” toy attached to plenty of controversy. Do you remember Tickle Me Elmo, Beanie Babies and Cabbage Patch Kids?

These $10 Zhu Zhu Pets have parents stressed out trying to find them and figure out whether they are safe to play with. Will children forget them a day or two after the holidays?

The Zhu Zhu Pets unsafe claims are based upon the elevated levels of tin and antimony discovered by the group Good Guide. Heavy metals are harmful when ingested.

Children notoriously put things in their mouth whether they're supposed to or not. Zhu Zhu Pets unsafe rumors are based on higher levels of tin and antimony but the Cepia LLC company claims they are safe. At this time, there is no Zhu Zhu Pets recall.

However, the crisis has everyone asking about Zhu Zhu Pets unsafe rumors and the validity behind them. Popcrunch reports the Consumer Product Safety Commission has opened an investigation of Zhu Zhu Pets unsafe claims.

The agency released a statement, “CPSC is looking into the Zhu Zhu Pet toy and we will complete our review swiftly. With new safety measures in place for children and toy recalls down from previous years, consumers can have greater confidence when shopping this year and in the CPSC.”

At this time, it cannot be said whether Zhu Zhu Pets unsafe rumors are true or not. I look forward to the report from the CPSC to determine whether Zhu Zhu Pets will remain on my daughter's Christmas list.

Check out the YouTube video of Kelly Wallace on CBSNewsOnline about the Consumer Product Safety Commission checking out Zhu Zhu Pets unsafe claims:

Holly Sampson: Tiger Woods Mistress #7!

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Holly Sampson, a porn star from Los Angeles, has become the seventh woman identified as an alleged mistress of Tiger Woods, according to UK tabloids.

Despite her profession, Woods may rival Holly in terms of career sex partners the way this still-unfolding scandal is going. He's averaging like one a day.

The 36-year-old "actress" has not articulated specifics of the affair as of yet, but if her filmography is any indication, we imagine they were into kinky stuff!

Film credits of Holly Sampson include:

* Descent Into Bondage
* How I Did Your MILF
* Diary of a Horny Housewife
* Flying Solo 2 (featuring Carrie Prejean)
* OMG Stop Tickling Me (Tiger's favorite)

Holly Sampson PictureOutta the Woods

Holly Sampson nailed Tiger Woods. Who hasn't, though?

This news comes just after alleged Tiger mistresses #5 and #6, Mindy Lawton and Cori Rist, were revealed over the weekend. Talk about prolific boinking.

We should start a pool for what the final tally will be.

Tiger and his wife, Elin Nordegren, have reportedly undergone intensive couples therapy (i.e. prenup renegotiation) since his alleged affairs were exposed.

Let's just say she stands to make a lot of money off of this.

Mistress #8, who has allegedly surfaced in Orlando, but has not yet gone public with her name or details of an affair, should be doing so any second now.

Cori Rist Pictures, yet another Tiger Woods mistress

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Cori Rist Pictures is in demand in the internet after several websites reporting that she is the 6th mistress of Tiger Woods that comes out to the public. According to the New York Daily, CoriRist is a 31-year old blonde, Manhattan clubgoer and she meet Woods at the Club Butter.

As smart as he is in playing golf, the report says Tiger Woods booked hotel room for Rist adjacent to his. This is going to shock millions of people once again as the women are claiming with evidences that Woods had been with them. CoriRist Pictures are hot in the internet because people want to compare all the mistresses of Tiger. Where does Cori Rist rank?

Conner was found strangled to death and hidden in an alley near her home. Authorities believe that the kidnapper had just killed her the day before and left her dead in the alley.

The parents of Jameshia are extremely upset with the police. Citing that the case was handled wrong by the police who ruled it previously as a runaway. They claimed if the cops have investigated this correctly, their kid may still be alive.

Jameshia's father Kawanis Conner has come out to say thank you to the officers who found his daughter's body. There will be a press conference on December 8th. Schools Deal with Loss of 2 Students

Posted by DAREDEVIL

PEARLAND, Texas - Students and staff at two Pearland schools are saddened Monday morning by the loss of 2 brothers, killed in a weekend plane crash.

13-year old Dylan Lord and his 12-year old brother Brendon Lord died along with their grandfather aboard his single-engine plane in Comal County.

60-year old Carlos McKinney was flying them to Pearland Regional Airport on Sunday after a weekend visit in Kerrville. The Department of Public Safety says air traffic controllers lost contact with the Beechcraft A36 Bonanza in stormy weather. The wreckage was found in a remote area of Comal County.

Dylan went to school in the Pearland Independent School District at Miller Junior High School while Brendon went to school at Rogers Middle School nearby.

Pearland ISD spokesperson Renea Ivy-Sims, says it is a huge loss that strongly affected both campuses.

"It's terrible. It's tragic," said Ivy-Sims on Monday morning outside Rogers Middle School.

" Of course the people at Rogers Middle School had Dylan two years before. He was at their school and now they have his little brother. So these faculty and staff know both boys. They know the family. The boys were both very well loved."

Ivy-Sims says grief counselors are being made available Monday for students, teachers, and staff members.

Visiting their grandparents in Kerrville was apparently just a monthly event for the Lord boys. Wayne Messinger, Pearland airport operations manager, says McKinney has been flying the boys to and from Kerrville for several years.

This time though, McKinney had upgraded his airplane from a Beachcraft V35 Bonanza to the A36. Messinger says the A36 is more powerful aircraft and may need to be handled differently in stormy weather.

Messinger says the fact that the wreckage was spread out and not all in one place is an indication that the plane could have broken up in mid-air.

"If it's an in-flight breakup, it could be that he entered into a strong storm going too quickly. If the air speed's too high and you get into a thunderstorm, it could cause that." Messinger said Monday morning.

"The airplane's pretty stout but it can only take so much."

iger Woods Text Message To Jaimee Grubbs (READ)

Posted by DAREDEVIL

We have found a text messages from Tiger Woods to Jaimee Grubbs supposedly. Woods has yet to say the text message claims were fake or wrong. Grubbs claimed this text message was sent to her:

Tiger: "I will wear you out...when was the last time you got (bleeped)"! "Send me something very naughty...Go to the bathroom and take (a picture)."

Those are some powerful words by Woods allegedly. I know if I was the wife of this man, that would not settle in my stomach too well. Grubbs also told US Magazine that she thought that Woods and his wife slept in different beds. She claimed that Tiger's wife went through his phone and may had been already on to him before the media explosion. Apparently there was a chance that his wife was going to call Grubbs.

It's also been rumored that Jaimee Grubbs told VH1 about her affair during a taping of a VH1 reality show that she was to partake on. VH1 edited it out apparently.

Grubbs claimed to have met Tiger at a nightclub in Las Vegas in 2007. She claimed she was a cocktail waitress at the times and he and her sustained a 31-month relationship together. (c) tPC

The Cougars had a 42-19 winner over Alief Taylor, at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rice. The Tigers (div two) would mark their 8th consecutive final appearance. They creamed the La Porte in the semis for the second straight season, winning 37-3. The Cougers (div one) after beating Beaumont West Brook 49-26 last week have reached the finals for the first time. K.C. Nlemchi had 245 yards and three touchdowns rushing. Nlemchi by the way has 2,162 yards and 25 TDs rushing this season, not bad for a junior eh? Katy and Cinco Ranch could both be Region III-5A champions by the end of this week.

Thank You!!!!

The members of the Conservative Slate would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who supported our campaign and voted for us in this year’s
Katy ISD School Board Election.

Though we did not win, we cannot begin to properly express our gratitude to all of our supporters who helped us in so many ways.

See the election results below. The vote counts were very close. It is clear that people are beginning to wake up to the many problems confronting the Katy Independent School District. We came very close in making positive changes in KISD.

Far from being over, with your help, fiscal conservatives who want to provide the best possible education for our children now have a very strong base to build upon in future elections.

She was trying to get tickets for her 14- and 19-year-old daughters.

"I'm excited," Shirkey said. "I tried to get tickets online yesterday and couldn't."

People started arriving at 5 a.m. today, with about 40 people in line for raffle tickets at about 8:30 a.m.

Shirkey arrived this morning at 8:40 a.m.

The goal of the lottery system was to eliminate the possibility of overnight lines and camping.

No line was allowed to form until 7 a.m. Anyone age 12 or older who was in the line by 9:30 a.m. received one raffle ticket. At 9:30 a.m., the tickets were shuffled, and one ticket was drawn. The person who had the matching ticket number become the first person in line. Everyone else stayed in numerical order, and those with lower ticket numbers went to the end of the line. People who arrived after the lottery also went to the end of the line.

Regarding the lottery, Scott Neal, assistant general manager for SMG, said, "It's pretty standard for arenas across the country and across the world. We just want to make sure there's a fair opportunity for everyone that comes."

As people received their raffle tickets, they headed back to their cars to warm up.

Most people wanted tickets for daughters, sisters or nieces.

Crystal Branaugh has 7-year-old daughter Hailey.

"This is all she wants for Christmas," Branaugh said. "Nothing else."

Jennifer Hughes wanted tickets for 10-year-old daughter Savannah.

"I figure I probably won't get them, but I had to try," Hughes said.

Azure Winter said her 7-year-old daughter, Sydnie, was excited at the thought of seeing Taylor Swift "in real life." If they get tickets it would be her first concert.

Krispy Kreme donated dozens of donuts and coffee.

Arena officials allowed people in (briefly, with an escort) to use bathrooms.

Tickets also went on sale at 10 a.m. at Select-A-Seat outlets, www.selectaseat.com and phone sales at 316-755-SEAT.

Tickets were $61.50, $51.50 and $27.

The circumstances of that crash have still not been fully explained, but the Florida Highway Patrol wrapped up their investigation Tuesday and hit Woods with a careless driving ticket that will set golf's highest paid golfer back a whopping $164.

Uchitel has thus far denied any relationship. She had planned a Thursday news conference to set the record straight but cancelled it. Moquin has refused to comment on the allegations.

For his part, Woods issued a statement to his Web site in which he apologized for "transgressions." It is unclear what those transgressions were.

Woods also said in the statement, "Personal sins should not require press releases and problems within a family shouldn't have to mean public confessions... I will strive to be a better person and the husband and father that my family deserves."

Pleasure P

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Pleasure P, a former member of Pretty Ricky and R&B group and singer, has just hit the headlines on the Internet.

And the reason is very unfortunate, and disturbing.

Marcus Cooper aka Pleasure P has allegedly been outed as a child molestor. It has been rumoured that he is also a repeat offender, and the children involved were his own niec and nephew ages 4 and 3 years old.

These rumours also claim that this was the reason her left Pretty Ricky in 2007, but apparently he was actually kicked out by the label and management of the band.

The rumours have come about during a Twitter rant to a blogger by a daughter of a member of a Law Firm who represented Cooper. And she wrote on Twitter about all the allegations saying:

My dad was being paid to cover it up but they owe my dad a lot of money and don’t want to pay him. I first overheard my dad say that it was someone famous but I found out who he was talking about.

This guy Pleasure P got kicked out of a group bc he was hiding that he was a child molester. his managers or whatever hired my dad to keep it quiet so he could get a record deal

The guy Pleasure P molested a 4 yr old child and was about to molest another one when police came and saved the child. Now, the truth is out they’re threatening my family nd telling my dad he’s going to get sued. But they can’t because its a crime.

A detailed letter which was sent to Necole Bitchie, goes further into the drama and alleged abuse. It goes as follows:

I know you heard a lot about the whole “Pretty Rickey/Pleasure P” child molestation drama. Well I am VERY close to the situation and BOTH parties and I want you to understand that it is ALL true. Not speculation or anything. He was convicted. The problem lies in Blue Star Entertainment, the label that housed and groomed Pretty Ricky. They paid a substantial amount of money to have these documents sealed back in 2006. The label wanted to keep the aura of Pleasure in the group and figured since he was signed basically for life that they would recoup the cost. Well, this was not the case as the other members of Pretty Ricky started separating themselves from Marcus “Pleasure P” Cooper as time went on. This eventually lead to them riding in separate cars to shows, arguing amongst themselves to them even jumping him (Pleasure P) at one point. This lead to him leaving the group but he is still very much contracted to Blue Stars Entertainment for 5 albums.

Here’s what happened: When he was 16 going on 17, he was left alone with his niece and nephew with whom he touched and penetrated with fingers on several occasions. His aunt noticed his niece complaining of her genital area hurting, when asked what happened she replied “Uncle Marcus keeps touching me and he hurt me”. Of course Marcus (Pleasure P) denied the allegations but the doctor found signs that she had vaginal damage and tearing. Charges were then pursued by the State of Florida.

The incident happened in 2004 going into 2005. He served like 8 months, rehab and community service by time the trial came up. Marcus accepted a plea with the State of Florida and Joseph Smith who is the care giver of the niece and nephew which Marcus “Pleasure P” Cooper molested. These are not the only papers filed against him. These are the first of 3. As part of the plea agreement Marcus plead guilty and paid an “undisclosed amount” to remain free and have the records “sealed” and on the family level for them to remain quiet and not to speak publicly about it. The “sealed document” means nothing other than “we won’t tell anyone it’s here..but if they find it they can have it” basically. The problem also is that Attorney Goldstein (Who represented Marcus “Pleasure P” Cooper in the trial) has a daughter named Laura Goldstein who is also her fathers assistant. Marcus Cooper never completed his payments after the hearing to his attorney.

Attorney Goldstein tried to reach out to Marcus only to be told “Don’t call this phone no more” on several occasions. This caused frustration on Attorney Goldstein’s ends due to the time & effort he put into this “special plea bargain” he negotiated that I don’t think ANY attorney could have done. After Attorney Goldstein threatened to sue Marcus Cooper the “alleged threats” became real from Coopers end. I have personally heard these messages and I know who they are from and they are very disturbing. Especially to an attorney who can use them against you.

Laura Goldstein felt her father was not doing enough to stop the threats as they began to increase so she took to twitter (her twitter is @AGoldsteinGirl) to “expose” Marcus “Pleasure P” Cooper in a way that was sure to make him “go away”. Now all the documents from the initial hearing have been released and there is plenty more evidence out there I assure you. Everyone involved including Spectacular (Pretty Ricky) have commented via twitter on the documents in shock thinking they would never get out.

The next problem is whether Laura Goldsteins father will have to pay the ultimate price of getting disbarred for breaking Attorney Client Privilege or will it be deemed public domain? I don’t know, but I do know both parties and its about to get ugly. I will keep you up to speed if anything else jumps off.

There was no claim to who wrote the letter nor if any of the claims were true. But if any of it is in the next few days we will be hearing a lot more about this case.

Robotics and the Next Steps for National Security

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Abstract: When it comes to robotics technology, the future is here. Robots across the world now traverse hazardous terrain, carry out surveillance missions, and perform remote surgery. They are becoming ever more sophisticated and autonomous. Robots easily and safely perform tasks that would otherwise endanger human lives, and do so faster and more efficiently than is possible with conventional methods. Robots are used by private industries and by the federal government. Robots play a vital role in maintaining the competitive edge in national security. This Heritage Foundation analysis explains why it is vital that Congress continue to fund robotics research and development in the U.S.

Technology does not win wars or make nations safe. The quest for national security is shaped by larger cultural, economic, and political factors and strategic choices. Yet governments always seek out technological innovations that can offer competitive advantages over adversaries. Innovation will always be a national security wild card. New technologies may unleash or accelerate social and cultural changes that affect how nations protect themselves--on the battlefield or behind the scenes.

Over the course of the 20th century, America's genius consisted of its capacity to ride the wave of technological change. That may not be the case in the future. American technological prowess is at risk. Congress will have to play an active role in ensuring that the United States does not lose its competitive edge.

Emerging technologies will have a dramatic impact on the future of U.S. national security. In the short term, these technologies will include possible immunity against biological agents, better cargo and passengerscreening at airports and ports, more efficient information-gathering techniques, and better armor for soldiers. In the long term, the sky is the limit. The fields of medicine, homeland security, defense, and manufacturing will be at the center of scientific advances for years to come and perhaps will redefine not only U.S. national security capabilities, but also how Americans conduct their daily lives.

One such technology is robotics. From manufacturing to defense, from surgery to disaster relief, robots can go where humans cannot go, and can do what humans cannot do. The majority of recent technological advancements could not have been accomplished without the help of robots.

While the potential for robotic technology continues to increase, government funding for robotics research in recent years has remained flat or even declined. The effects of the government's decrease in robotics funding are far-reaching, affecting American industry, decreasing technological advancement at universities, and threatening national security. Without advancement in robotics, the U.S. will become dependent on other countries for manufacturing, health care, and ultimately, defense.

Ensuring that America stays at the forefront of technological development in robotics will require a commitment from Congress and the Obama Administration. It will take a legislative framework, focused on combatant needs, that encourages the development of emerging technologies, as well as a visa system that attracts the best and the brightest to study and work within the competitive technology fields in the United States. Given the national security implications of robotics, it is vital that federal agencies efficiently and effectively fund research and development in robotic science and encourage concurrent innovation in the private sector.

Robotics in Brief

The term "robotics" applies to how robots are designed, manufactured, programmed, and used. Robotic technology is not new. In ancient times, Ctesibius, an Alexandrian inventor and mathematician, invented a robotic water organ; 1,500 years later Leonardo da Vinci developed a mechanical knight. With the advent of industrialization, robots have transitioned from entertaining conversation pieces into assembly line necessities. According to the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE), the world's robot population had reached 4.49 million in 2008, a number likely to almost double by 2010.[1] While most industrial robots are made in Asia, many military robots are made in the United States.

One of the biggest impacts of robotics on the world economy resulted from automation. "Automation" refers to robots whose actions are dictated by a computer program. Before automation, humans controlled the robots' actions in real time through joysticks and other wired or remote controllers. With the advent of automation, robots like those in factories could run with minimal human presence.

The Current Robotics Landscape in Five Sectors. The potential uses for robotics are as diverse and far-reaching as the robots themselves. While robots have had a considerable impact on multiple aspects of human life, five major or emerging sectors are: (1) manufacturing, (2) defense, (3) disaster preparedness, response, and relief, (4) border security, and (5) medicine.

1. Manufacturing. Manufacturing makes up 14 percent of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP).[2] From cars to computers, from Ritalin to Twinkies, robotics and automation play a part in creating many types of consumer goods. Bottling plants, automotive makers, and appliance manufacturers have increased the number of industrial robots in their assembly lines. In fact, "a total of 7,172 robots valued at $425.8 million have been ordered by North American manufacturing companies through September [2009]."[3] Robots make manufacturing processes more efficient by making assembly faster and more consistent. [4] Robots can work in unsafe conditions and in tight spaces. They can do heavy lifting, work overtime, and never need workman's compensation. A single software engineer can "re-train" an entire fleet of robotic assembly line workers in a matter of minutes.

Beyond the rote economics, robots are becoming a necessary tool in maintaining America's position on the world's innovation stage. The physical sizeof technological machineryhas been shrinking at an amazing rate.[5] Today, the manufacture of many of the world's most innovative technologies and nanotechnologies requires super-human precision.[6] The steadiest of human hands cannot consistently place one molecule of carbon on another to create a synthetic diamond,[7] or correctly place a microscopic electrode onto a Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) device.[8] Manufacturing top-level new technologies often requires automation, and automation requires robotics engineers.

The majority of industrial robots are made and used overseas. As more funds go to these overseas companies, the capabilities of foreign robotics manufacturers will surpass those of American plants. Without the ability to design, engineer, and create robots domestically, the U.S. will become increasingly dependent on foreign manufacturing for both current and future products. The U.S. must retain leading-edge robotics manufacturing capabilities in order to maintain a technological advantage in weapon systems, reconnaissance technologies, and other national security products. If current trends continue, the U.S. will be forced to outsource the majority of its manufacturing, thereby giving economic resources and top-notch design plans to the very countries that threaten its national security.

2. Defense. The impact of robots on national security does not stop at manufacturing. Many of the most advanced U.S. defense technologies are robots. Thousands of robots are deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan supporting military operations on land, sea, and in the air. Some robotic military technology is completely autonomous.[9] Intelligence-gathering is often achieved by unmanned aerial, ground, or underwater vehicles. Unmanned autonomous vehicles have been deployed for reconnaissance (such as detecting anti-ship mines in littoral waters),[10] monitoring coastal waters for adversaries (like pirate ships),[11] and precision air strikes on evasive targets.[12]

Some of the most exciting military technologies center on robots working in concert with humans. Boston Dynamic's robotic Big Dog (a remote-controlled robot that looks like a big dog) enables soldiers to transport heavy equipment over ice, heavily forested areas, and steep, narrow foothills. Robot-powered exoskeletons give soldiers super-human strength.[13] Remote-controlled explosive-disposal robots, such as Talon, keep soldiers from physical danger while the robots destroy mines.[14] Andros II and Mini-Andros are used by bomb squads across the country; they can see in the dark, and defuse or detonate bombs without risking human life.[15]

Advancements in military robotics have been adapted for commercial use and vice versa. DEKA and other companies make commercial robotics products like the Segway, which the military adapts for combat use.[16] Another company, iRobot, made military robots such as the PackBot and transformed the technology into a consumer good (the Roomba, a robotic vacuum).[17]

As robotics technology continues to advance, the military-industrial partnership should be maintained and encouraged through legislative, policy, and organizational innovations to ensure that top-level robotics continue to be applied to national defense. To maintain world class military technology, the federal government must continue to invest in these technologies in accordance with combatant needs. As the population of other countries increases (China's population now outnumbers the U.S.'s 5 to 1), the U.S. may not have enough sheer manpower to defend itself. While robotics are not a panacea for all situations where manpower is necessary, they are a vital tool in America's military prowess.

3. Disaster Preparedness, Response, and Relief. Disaster preparedness, response, and relief are vital elements of homeland security, and robotic technologies are some of the most innovative and effective means of carrying out these activities. In the event of a national disaster, roads may be in rubble or flooded. Telephone or Internet lines may be down. Supplies and equipment may need to be transported quickly over non-traversable terrain.

Small autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are robots that can be used to carry supplies to remote areas. Denel Dynamics has developed a "homing pigeon" UAV that can fly supplies to a disaster area, drop them off, and return to home base all without human intervention, and faster than conventional carriers.[18] UAVs could also deliver anti-venom to snakebite victims in remote places faster than conventional methods. In the event of a bio-terrorist attack, these UAVs could deliver face masks or antidotes without risking a pilot's health.

UAVs could also be used to create self-contained communications networks. If a disaster destroys Internet or phone connections, communication among rescue workers is at risk. Currently, satellite communication networks are used, but weather and other conditions, particularly after a large explosion, could render current technology useless. The Laboratory of Intelligent Systems at the Swiss Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) has designed a Swarm of Micro Air Vehicles capable of autonomously establishing an emergency wireless network between ground users in a disaster area. These robots could replace damaged and congested networks.[19] The advantage of the robotic disaster-relief technologies is that they can be built ahead of time, and be deployed only if they are needed. While an adversary could plan to knock out, say, satellites, it would be much more difficult to destroy un-deployed response robots, especially if their storage location is classified.

After an earthquake, missile attack, or tsunami, robot-assisted rescue may be America's most effective course of action. Robots can venture into areas that are unsafe for humans. Robug III, designed after the Chernobyl nuclear-reactor accident, can explore areas where extreme radiation levels would kill a human being.[20] Researchers at Japan's Tohoku University have developed the camera-carrying Snakebot, a robot capable of "slithering" on its own over and through earthquake rubble. Snakebot can quickly locate trapped victims, sending images of them to rescuers in real time without unnecessarily putting responders at risk.[21]

4. Medicine. While robot-assisted disaster relief is relatively new, robot-assisted surgery has been occurring for more than a quarter of a century. [22] Since the 1980s, robots have been assisting doctors in repairing knee ligaments, removing gallbladders, and performing hysterectomies. With the help of better and smaller robotic tools and software systems,[23] patients require smaller incision wounds and shorter time under anesthesia than with conventional surgery, which translates into faster healing times, less pain, decreased risk of infection, and less blood loss.[24]

Beyond making surgery safer and more accurate, robots are increasing the number of people with access to top medical care. In remote surgery, or telesurgery, a doctor controls a robot that works on a patient--even if that patient is thousands of miles away. With remote surgery, city doctors can operate on rural patients, decreasing transportation costs and increasing options for both patients and doctors.[25]

In the current surgical world, the majority of doctors are limited to a geographic location and population. As a result they need to be able to perform a broad range of services. If, for instance, the world's best clubbed-foot specialist lived in Dallas, the number of people in the Dallas-area born with clubbed feet every year could not keep that doctor busy full-time because the birth defect is quite rare (1 in 1,000 live births). With remote surgery, a doctor could theoretically serve as the clubbed-foot specialist for the entire South, becoming a "super-specialist" for clubbed-foot surgery.

In the U.S., many states have begun to report doctor and dentist shortages, especially in rural areas. Remote robotic-assisted surgery would mitigate or even solve this problem: Not only would it bring medical access to people in rural areas, it could also be useful for new doctors who currently must choose between location and specialty. Moreover, in the event of a bio-terrorist attack or an epidemic, immune robotic medical personnel may be the best solution to contain and cure infected individuals.

In military medical care, remote surgery can help provide soldiers with medical care more quickly than under current conditions. Modified tanks could house remote operating rooms. These tanks could accompany soldiers into battlefields. Soldiers often lose their limbs or even their lives because it simply takes too much time until they reach a medic or hospital. With telesurgery, a medic could perform a life-saving operation on a remote injured soldier. Moreover, fewer medics would be required in the field, since a single medic could perform surgeries on soldiers from geographically disparate platoons.

The Food and Drug Administration and other health-related agencies should work with medical professionals and policy experts to promote scientific exchange and revolutionize the health care industry through robot-assisted surgery. Congress and the Administration should ensure that product development of other robot-assistance devices in the medical field, such as robotic prosthesis, remains competitive on a world stage.

5. Border Security. Robots have the potential to serve as excellent border security devices. Robots can be transformed into light, adaptable, and cost-friendly technology for a whole host of security functions. A robotic "ferret" has been developed for airports and seaports, which can detect tiny particles of dangerous substances in cargo containers. [26]

Robots are even being deployed on the southwest border to investigate tunnels used to smuggle illegal immigrants, drugs, and weapons into the U.S. Robots like the Talon and PackBot are able to traverse these tunnels even if communication with controllers is lost, thereby removing the risk of booby traps for agents. Such success was recently experienced when U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Idaho National Laboratory, an applied-engineering laboratory that aims to develop new energy and national security systems, sent a Talon into an old 50-foot-long tunnel.[27] Despite mud, water, and loss of communication, the Talon was able to traverse the tunnel and return mapping information, as well as chemical and gas levels.

UAVs can also be used for border security measures. With more than 700 miles of border between the U.S. and Mexico, the manpower simply does not exist to provide continuous border surveillance without the use of robot technologies. UAVs can fly between the ports of entry (POEs) that are used by illegal immigrants and for smuggling. UAVs can patrol the border for at least 30 hours without refueling; helicopters average two hours.[28] This robotics technology is also capable of tracking movement by means of thermal-detection sensors in densely wooded areas and mountainous regions that helicopters and foot patrolmen may not be able to reach.

The Robotics Future

The opportunities to use robotics to further the safety and security of the United States are many. Without competitive robotics design and manufacture, America's economy and defense will be in the hands of other countries that have spent the early 21st century developing robot technologies. Tomorrow's products will be made by today's robots. The U.S. government and industry must work together to keep America competitive with foreign robotics capabilities. Congress and the Obama Administration should:

* Establish a Framework for National Security Research and Development. Congress should establish a framework that will facilitate national security research and development programs and that will address concerns about risks to humans with legislative guidelines for liability and safety issues in research, development, and procurement.
*

Facilitate Interagency Coordination. Currently, each military service prefers separately managed programs geared to its individual needs. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) concluded that the military could save money and resources by combining the services' 13 UAV programs. The GAO cited the Fire Scout UAV program as an example of interagency coordination. The Army and Navy are pursuing common components under a Navy contract, saving an estimated $200 million in research and development costs.

The Department of Defense should accelerate this type of cooperation, promoting common configurations, harmonizing performance requirements, and drawing on common testing, evaluation, and support. Cooperation should extend to the Department of Homeland Security, supporting the UAV requirements of the Coast Guard and the Customs and Border Protection.
* Support the Continuance and Expansion of the SAFETY Act. Robotics has no future without further innovation. Unfortunately, post-9/11 liability fears have made many companies reluctant to pursue technological development for national security. Therefore, the protections offered by the Support Anti-terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies (SAFETY) Act are key. Congress passed the act in 2002 to lower the liability risk to manufacturers, distributors, and providers of "qualified anti-terrorism technologies." Since then, approximately 200 companies have obtained certification under the program. The third-party liability protections of the SAFETY Act can help ensure that companies are willing to continue progress on robotics technologies to be deployed in national security.
* Continue Funding Robotics Research. Congress should continue to fund robotics research, development, and procurement. The success of robots on the battlefield merits the resources necessary to meet the Pentagon's goal of replacing one-third of its armed vehicles and weaponry with robots by 2015.[29] Furthermore, homeland security science and technology funds should be used to advance robotics research for disaster response and border security.
* Increase Brainpower. Many of the robotics engineers trained in the U.S. are foreign students. The current visa system prevents a sizeable number of these students from staying in the U.S. postgraduation. Visa reform should be enacted to allow more H1-B visas for robotics engineers, especially for those trained in U.S. universities. Currently, the law permits only 65,000 H-1B visas to be granted each fiscal year. If top robotics engineers cannot stay in or even come to the U.S., they will be forced to seek work helping other governments and foreign industries--using their skills to compete directly against America. The U.S. should increase H-1B availability in order to encourage foreigners educated in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to work in America. Congress must also promote STEM skills at home starting at the K-12 level. This will require drastic educational reforms that improve student learning on a state and local basis such as school choice, charter schools, emphasizing teacher quality, ending social promotion, and changes in how teachers are hired and compensated. This will also require school systems to reach out to industry professionals in order to educate students in robotics and automation.

America's capability to seize and maintain a strategic advantage in robotic development and applications cannot be sustained without a firm commitment from the Administration and Congress. Congress should provide adequate funding, promoteincreased coordination, and craft policies that encourage prudent investment in robotic technology for the government as well as the private sector. The country's safety depends on it.

Since the 1958 invention of the integrated circuit, the number of transistors that can be placed inexpensively on an integrated circuit has doubled approximately every two years. This exponential reduction in size of technology is referred to as Moore's Law.

[6]Nanotechnologies involve structures of 100 nanometers (100 x 10^-9 m) or smaller and the development of materials or devices within that space.

[8]MEMS are devices that are less than 1 mm in size. Examples of devices using MEMS technology: inkjet printers (which use the MEMS to deposit ink on paper) and Nintendo Wii's game controller (shaking the controller gets Mario to move forward due to a MEMS-enabled accelerometer).

[9]While there are many benefits to unmanned autonomous vehicles, the technology is relatively new. Unmanned autonomous vehicles cannot sense objects in their path, and are therefore likely to collide with commercial airplanes or flocks of birds.

[23]Providing three-dimensional views, robot-assisted surgical software can improve the surgeon's depth perception views. Laproscopic techniques provide only two-dimensional views.

[24]Robotics allow motion-scaling: large, imprecise motions can be scaled down to small, precise motions providing surgeons with increased accuracy in tight spaces. One inch of movement on the part of the surgeon can translate to an eighth-inch movement on the part of the robot. Moreover, the surgical field can be magnified so that 1mm arteries can be enlarged to appear as large as drinking straws.
