On July 15, 2009, legendary Paul McCartney made his first appearance at New York City’s historic Ed Sullivan Theater in 45 years, when famously, in 1964, The Beatles performed on the Ed Sullivan Show, making their first major TV appearance in the U.S. (That performance can be seen here and here on YouTube.)

As the Paul McCartney Letterman video reveals, the McCartney and his band performed on top of the theater, outdoors on the marquee, on Broadway between 53rd and 54th Streets. He played the Beatles signature hit Get Back as well as Sing the Changes, a song from his most recent album, Electric Arguments which was released under the pseudonym The Fireman. Additionally (not broadcast) the band played Band on the Run and Helter Skelter which can be seen below in video shot by audience members.

During the Paul McCartney David Letterman interview, the former Beatle discussed a range of topics, reminiscing about the early years of the legendary band and their arrival in America as part of the British Invasion. He discussed the Beatles TV appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show when he was 22 years old, alongside fellow band members John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. He went on to discuss his later collaborations in the 1980s with Michael Jackson (the two collaborated on the hit singles “Say Say Say,” and “The Girl is Mine”).
