Court splits Ayodhya mosque site between religions

Posted by DAREDEVIL

A court ruled on Thursday that the site of a demolished mosque in Ayodhya would be split between Hindus and Muslims, dousing immediate fears of a violent backlash in one of the country's most religiously divisive cases.

The Uttar Pradesh court also ruled Hindus will be allowed to keep a makeshift temple that was built over the demolished central mosque dome, sparking celebrations by priests who dipped in a nearby river chanting "The temple is now ours".

The 1992 demolition of the 16th century mosque in northern India by Hindu mobs triggered some of India's worst riots that killed about 2,000 people. More than 200,000 police fanned out in India on Thursday to guard against any communal violence.

If the ruling soothes tensions, it would be a boost for the ruling Congress party, a left-of-centre group with secular roots, that does not want to upset either voter bloc. Major political parties had called for calm.

"I know that often it is only a few mischief makers who create divisions in our society," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in a statement.

"I would appeal to my countrymen to be vigilant and not let such people succeed in disrupting peace and harmony."

The verdict was handed down days before Sunday's opening of the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, with the government wanting to project an image of stability and modernity to the world.

"Nobody has won. Nobody has lost," Yashwant Sinha, a leader of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, told local television. "Let's not look at this as a victory for anyone."

Muslims did appear the biggest losers. But Muslim organisations were measured in their response, careful not to inflame public tensions in a country where they account for only 13 percent of the 1.2 billion plus population.

There were no immediate reports of violence after the ruling.

"It was a very sensible judgment and the court has tried to balance the parties," said Anil Verma, a political analyst. "Apportioning one-third to the Muslims means they have not completely lost."

Commentators said the verdict was unlikely to spark widespread riots that hit the financial capital Mumbai and other cities in 1992. There is little electoral headway to be made in egging on religious riots in post-economic reform India.

The 2-1 majority verdict gave two-thirds of the key parts of the disputed land to Hindus -- one third each to two different Hindu groups -- and one third to Muslims.

Hindu inhabitants of Ayodhya town -- under a security lockdown for a week -- lit candles and lamps outside their homes.

MUSLIM DISAPPOINTMENT

Many Muslim organisations expressed some disappointment but called for reconciliation, resting hopes in an appeal by Muslim lawyers to the Supreme Court in New Delhi.

"The judgment can begin a process of reconciliation," Kamal Farooqi, a member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said.

From the capital New Delhi to Mumbai and towns of the northern Hindu "cow belt" along the holy Ganges river, many Indians waited with apprehension on the verdict, some staying at home and stocking up with food.

"Everybody is very happy with the verdict. People were scared but now everything seems to be normal. People are now opening their shops," said Ghulam Mohammad Sheik, a social worker in Mumbai.

The verdict's outcome will be a barometer of whether a rapidly globalising India with a growing middle class and an interest in investor stability has shed some of the religious extremism that often marred its post-independence years.

"I just think there is a moment in which we have to agree with ourselves as modern people to live in the modern world," British-Indian novelist Salman Rushdie told NDTV broadcaster before the verdict was announced.

John France: Facebook Bigamy

Posted by DAREDEVIL

John France, Lynn France’s husband, is surely no angel. For the millions of Facebook users out there, the social networking site is a wonderful way to reconnect with friends and keep in touch with loved ones who live far away. But for married John France, it was his way of meeting another woman who eventually became his second wife. But while many may think France is guilty of living a double life, he claims that is far from the truth. Read what John has to say about his scandalous life of alleged infidelity and see photos here.

John France is making headlines with his life of bigamy unveiled via social networking site Facebook. But this isn’t your common cheating scandal. So how did his estranged wife Lynn France find out about her husband’s other wife and why is this case so unusual?

Lynn married John back in 2005 in what was a wedding that could have been taken right out of a fairytale. The couple married on Italy’s Amalfi coast and the happy duo went on to have two sweet little boys that they raised in Cleveland, Ohio. However after three years of what seemed to be wedded bliss, Lynn suspected things weren’t quite right with her husband. After John told his wife that he was leaving on a trip to China, she realized that he was not telling the truth after she discovered he left his passport at home. So, instead of phoning her husband to ask him what he was up to, she did her own research and in the midst of it all she came across a website on her home computer that showed proof of John’s alleged infidelity. He was leaving Lynn for his new woman Amanda.

While the shock of John’s alleged cheating tugged at her heart strings, it was after she looked Amanda up on Facebook that she broke down. Not only did Amanda have photos of a bridal shower uploaded, but also pictures of a wedding (held in Florida) that showed John lovingly looking into his second bride’s eyes.

After the confrontation (which would have made for a devastating scene straight out of Cheaters), John attempted a reconciliation with Lynn which ended in John taking the couple’s two sons to Florida with him. Since John took the boys, Lynn has not seen her boys

However John defended his innocence by citing his marriage to Lynn as illegal. He explains, “This goes back years and years; it’s not new news. I hired an Italian attorney to go and confirm the marriage was illegal. The attorney came back with affidavits stating that it was invalid. We discussed this a number of times. At first she believed it, and then she keeps on flip-flopping. OK? This goes back at least two years.”

While Lynn could probably care less about John and his new bride, it is her children she wants back in her life. And now, a nasty child custody battle ensues. See what John and Amanda say about the cheating allegations in the video below.

What do you think of John France and the Facebook bigamy scandal? About what about his new wife Amanda France?

Shannon Marketic Caught Shoplifting? Former Miss USA Accused of Stealing Beauty Products

Posted by DAREDEVIL

DENTON (CBS/KTVT) Shannon Marketic, a former Miss USA, has been released from a Texas jail after she was accused of stealing almost $90 in merchandise from a Target department store in North Texas.

Marketic, 38, was released from a Denton jail Tuesday after posting a $500 bond.

The former beauty queen is charged with stealing an Oil of Olay Professional ProX skin treatment worth around $60, along with some baby items.

According to Capt. Len Carter with the Denton Police Department, Marketic was detained by Target loss prevention just before 9 p.m.

Marketic's Facebook page indicates she is the marketing director for the North Texas Fresh - an American Basketball Association Team. A call and email to that organization have not been returned.

This is not Marketic's first brush with the legal system. In June of 2007, Marketic was arrested for public intoxication at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Marketic won the Miss USA title in 1992. In 1997, she sued the sultan of Brunei, accusing him of having held her as a sex slave. According to the Dallas Morning News, a federal judge threw out the suit saying the sultan was immune from such a court action as a foreign head of state.

Operation Beautiful: Empower Yourself!

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Blogger Caitlin Boyle, 24, slapped a post-it note on a public bathroom mirror that said, “YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!” and that little act of kindness has grown into a movement called Operation Beautiful. MSNBC reports that Boyle has written a book called Operation Beautiful: Transforming the Way You See Yourself One Post-it Note at a Time about “fat talk” and the negative impact we can have on ourselves and others.

Women engage in Fat Talk – criticizing our bodies and obsessing about unrealistic ideals – to “express emotions, seek social reassurance, create an in-group with friends, excuse certain eating behaviors, and manage impressions,” according to Dr. Denise Martz, a clinical psychologist who has spent more than 20 years studying body image, eating disorders and Fat Talk.

It’s a contagious disease. “We tend to follow other people’s leads, particularly those who are close to us,” says Dr. Susan Albers, a psychologist who specializes in relationship and weight issues.

So? Stop talking about being fat. Stop obsessing. It sounds overly simple, but it could make a huge change in your life. Jessica Simpson recently shared similar feelings in Lucky Magazine: “We all obsess over looking like the perfect Barbie type, and that’s not always what’s beautiful,” Jessica said. “It’s about making peace with yourself.”

Taskrabbit website makes life easy: How Taskrabbit works

Taskrabbit is a site that provides help making common tasks easier for members. To join task members you sign up and then choose or post a task and determine how much you will pay for the task. Some task examples include picking up groceries, donating items, picking up items from a store or having your items assembled, or even doing shopping for you. Once you determine your task and set a price, a runner will take the task and perform the assignment for you.

Joining Taskrabbit is free and the only money involved is setting a price to determine how much you’ll pay for a task, then paying upon the task’s completion. Determining the price for your task is vitally important.

Since the runner may need to travel a long distance to perform your task, it’s important to ensure that the cost of travel any tolls, and gas is included in your price. Some tasks require more skill than others and this should be taken into account as well.

Include the amount of time it takes to complete the task when determining pricing. Some tasks are longer than others, and some must be performed on a short schedule. If you need a task done quickly, consider paying more.

When a runner completes a task your credit or debit card will be charged. This ensures that you don’t pay until you’re task is complete.

Leah Siegel, ESPN Producer Who Inspired Many, Dies at 43

Pei Wei Employees Fired for Missing Work to Attend Rally

Posted by DAREDEVIL

CHANDLER - A dozen employees who were fired by a Chandler Pei Wei restaurant claim it was because of the controversial new immigration law.

The employees tell us they were let go after they attended a rally against SB 1070, but the restaurant says there's more to the story. They apparently skipped out on their scheduled shifts to attend the protest.

Those 12 former employees want their jobs back, and are also asking for back pay and an apology from Pei Wei. They say other employees who didn't show up to work were punished -- not fired -- and they shouldn't have been treated differently.

They're now taking their protest to Pei Wei's front door.

"I thought they were going to support us in one way but they didn't," says Elizabeth Serafin, who was fired. She says she didn't call in May 29 because other workers had asked for the day off but were denied.

Twelve of the store's 30 employees didn't show up for work to march in the anti-SB 1070 protest.

"We were hungry, we were thirsty… it was worse than going to work, we didn't do it for fun!" says Serafin.

Serafin claims that when other employees have missed work in the past, without calling in, they were punished but not fired.

Yvonne Herrera also lost her job. She worked for Pei Wei for 10 years as a cook, without ever taking a sick day, she says.

Pei Wei issued the following statement: "We were disappointed that 12 employees from our Chandler location chose to violate a well-known attendance policy resulting in their termination. When employees chose not to show up for a scheduled shift and chose not to give notice, it causes tremendous disruption to fellow coworkers and impedes our ability to serve our guests."

Serafin says she doesn't regret missing work to march for an issue she feels so strongly about.

'"We know [the immigration law] going to affect our families or even our jobs… there's a lot of people coming from another state. There's a lot of white people doing that, how come we're not doing it for ourselves?"

A local workers union is helping the 12 people who were fired. Protesters say they continue to picket outside of Pei Wei from time to time.

Nap Nanny Baby Recliners Recalled After Reports of Suffocation, Entrapment, Falls

Posted by DAREDEVIL

(CBS) The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled 30,000 "Nap Nanny" portable baby recliners after a 4-month-old Royal Oak, Mich. girl reportedly died in one of the recliners that was being used in a crib.

The child was found strapped into her harness and hanging over the side of the recliner, caught between it and the crib bumper, according to the CPSC website.

The commission and the product's manufacturer, Baby Matters, are aware of other cases in which infants, primarily those under 5 months of age, became trapped in or fell out of one of the recliners.

Infants can partially fall or hang over the side of the recliner even when they are strapped into the harness that comes with the product. The risk is greater if the product's straps are not properly attached to the D rings, or if consumers use a first-generation Nap Nanny, which was sold without D rings.

The Nap Nanny is designed for sleeping, resting, and playing. It's intended for use on the floor, away from cribs and any other products. If the product is used on a counter or other elevated surface, the child could fall out and sustain a serious head injury.

The recalled Nap Nannys were sold for about $130 at toy and children's retail stores nationwide and online, including at www.napnanny.com, from January 2009 through July 2010.

Consumers with a first-generation Nap Nanny should stop using the product immediately and contact the firm to receive an $80 coupon towards the purchase of a new Nap Nanny. Those with a second-generation model should immediately stop using the product until they view product warnings and instructions on the manufacturer's website

Johnny Depp: Free The West Memphis Three

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Damien Echols, 35, has spent his entire adult life on Arkansas' death row. Every day, he faces the possibility of execution. But there is a bright spot in his life.

"She's like a living, breathing miracle in human form," Damien says of Lorri Davis, his wife of 10 years.

Lorri met Damien after she became aware of his controversial case. She wrote to him, traveled from New York to see him and offered her help. "It was the right thing to do," she says, "because he is innocent."

"I can understand you believing that he's innocent and wanting to work on his case. But what made you actually decide to marry him?" asks "48 Hours Mystery "correspondent Erin Moriarty.

"Well, I mean, the simple answer is I loved him. He's an amazing person. And he's going to be worth this."

Lorri is now familiar with every facet of Damien’s case and works day and night with the legal team, fighting not only for Damien on death row, but for Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, the other convicted men who are serving life sentences.

"We have gone through every aspect of this case and there was never been anything that pointed to their guilt," she explains.

They are known as the West Memphis Three, and they are now actively supported by people who could really make a difference, like Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam and actor Johnny Depp.

"I’m here because I firmly, truly, 1000 percent believe that Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley are totally innocent," Depp tells Moriarty.

Despite all that, the Arkansas courts have upheld all three convictions for more than 16 years. Prosecutors maintain that Damien, Jason and Jessie are responsible for the cold-blooded murder of three 8-year-old boys.

On May 5, 1993, Chris Byers, Michael Moore and Stevie Branch were out playing together.

"Stevie was very outgoing, a brilliant child. Anyone who knew him loved him," says his mom, Pam.

A waitress back then, Pam didn’t worry very much when her son wasn’t home before her 5 p.m. shift began. "I just figured that he might of lost track of time and was on his way home."

It was when her husband, Stevie’s stepfather, picked her up at 9 p.m. that she heard for the first time that the boys had still not returned. "I just started cryin' and sayin', 'God, no, no. Why isn't he home?'"

Pam searched straight through the night along with other panicked parents, including Chris Byers' father, Mark.

Then, at 1 p.m. the next day, police made a grim discovery in a wooded strip by the interstate known to the kids as Robin Hood Hills. Stevie, Michael and Chris were found bludgeoned and drowned in a drainage ditch. Their bodies were naked and hogtied with their own shoelaces.

"I hit the ground screaming, 'God, no, no!" says Pam.

"Just a gut wrenching moment to put into words… the disaster, the devastation," Byers recalls.

Six days later, he buried his son, Chris.

"When these murders happened, it was something that was almost like an atomic bomb going off," Damien explains. "You have three children that are murdered. I mean, that in itself is a pretty horrific thing…And then slowly, details start comin' out about how they were found. Now, a lot of these details weren't true."

Byers says there were a lot of rumors. "I heard that one of 'em was skinned. I heard that one of 'em's face was cut off."

"Then you start hearin' all these, you know, people whispering about, maybe it was Satanists that did this," says Damien.

That theory did not seem so farfetched at the time. A media-fueled hysteria about satanic cults was sweeping the country.

An FBI investigation found no such satanic murders, but in 1993, West Memphis juvenile officer Jerry Driver was concerned about cult activity, saying, "It seems to be a trend right now."

Damien Echols Speaks Out

Driver had Damien, an 18-year-old dropout, in his sights.

"I think I was the closest thing he could come to conceiving of what he thought a Satanist would look like… all black was the only thing I ever wore. Ridiculous hairstyles. I was a stupid teenager. I really was a smart ass," he says, admitting he didn't help his case at all.

Driver was convinced that the murders were the work of Damien Echols, and he told that to the police.

Damien was now a prime suspect and he says word of that leaked out. "I walked into a softball game. I went around the concession stand and I hear people sayin', 'There he is. That's him.'"

Still, police had no physical evidence or anything else to connect him to the crime; not until someone Damien knew spoke out.

VANCOUVER -- Bison B.C. guitarist-vocalist Dan And is just about ready to leave Vancouver.

Should that ever happen, you can probably thank the 2010 Winter Olympics for driving him out of town.

Reached via phone in April just before the release of Bison B.C.’s latest album Dark Ages — while the band was touring the U.S. opening for Oakland-based power trio High On Fire — And made his frustration with the overall state of affairs in Vancouver fairly clear.

“I love Vancouver — don’t get me wrong,” he said. “I feel like it’s my town and all my friends are there, and the family and the community I’ve surrounded myself with is there.

“But I’ve almost reached the point where I’m too fed up and I just want to go up north and hide in the woods.”

He laughed.

Dark Ages admittedly deals in large part with Vancouver’s makeover before the big event that took place in February.

Bison B.C.’s band members all work and live in and around Vancouver’s embattled Downtown Eastside, a part of the city And said was swept under the rug before and during the Games to make way for showcasing the “pretty” side of Vancity to the rest of the world.

While writing the material for Dark Ages, a word popped up — “Renaissance,” which appears in the lyrics of the album’s opening track, Stressed Elephant — that encapsulated And’s feelings and served as a catalyst for the album’s direction and overall theme.

“You start thinking about the Dark Ages and decadent societies that get to a certain point of decadence before they just collapse,” And said. “I think that we’re headed there.

“I’m kind of obsessed with the idea of 2012. I’ve actually got an application on my iPhone that’s counting down. Sometimes I’ll watch that for a while, just waiting for it. I don’t think anything’s going to happen — I just like the idea.”

You can only imagine And in hiding somewhere in the mountains in a little shack, surrounded by canned goods and camping gear, sitting by the stove and staring at his iPhone, waiting for the 2012 deadline to come and most likely go without a sound.

“Yeah, I’m going to be a crazy hill man,” And said. “Me and my girlfriend will be boarded up — a two-person militia that doesn’t do anything and just waits.”

On its second album for heavy- metal stalwart label Metal Blade — “If idiots like us can get on Metal Blade, anybody can do it,” And said — Bison B.C. finds itself refining its barbarian onslaught with flurries of acoustic guitars and keyboard touches.

And attributes this new approach to the band’s evolving relationship with Vancouver-based producer Jesse Gander, who also produced the band’s previous album, 2008’s Quiet Earth.

“You need dynamics to make things heavy,” And said. “A lot of metal nowadays is steady double-kick drum, and it loses its heaviness because your ears just get tired.

“We went in and did an entire day of feedback and guitar noise that [Gander] used in certain parts here and there,” And added. “He really wanted to make one song flow into the other. I love that dynamic. It keeps things interesting for us, too.”

Stressed Elephant, for example, lurches forward with blasts of French horn. Fear Cave ends in a static-laden coda. Album closer Wendigo Pt. 3 (Let Him Burn) begins with a pensive acoustic guitar and piano line overlapped with the sound of trains recorded near the Rogers sugar refinery in Vancouver.

The latter track is the third instalment in the “Wendigo series” that began on Quiet Earth, an album that featured the first two chapters in the song cycle.

Considering this is becoming sort of a running theme, are there any more Wendigo songs to be expected in the future?

“I didn’t intend on writing three Wendigos,” And said with a laugh. “When I started writing, it just kept coming. Even the story in the lyrics, I didn’t feel like it was done.

“But it’s done for now — I don’t want to keep writing Wendigo songs over and over again.”

All things considered, the Wendigo theme — referring to the mythical cannibalistic creature of Algonquian lore — seems to fit really well with the whole 2012/run to the hills/end of the civilized world thing.

“That’s what I could do: I could do a whole concept album about moving to the hills and trying to find the Wendigo,” And said.

“Maybe I’m on to something. I could make a documentary about losing my mind.

“It’ll be out like 10 years from now — ‘Whatever happened to Dan And? Where did he go?’”

Alphonse Mucha Birthday and His Women Images Featured in Google Doodle

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Alphonse Mucha Birthday and His Women Images Featured in Google Doodle – Today, July 24, another Google Doodle is being flashed in Google’s US homepage. Apparently, it’s the way Google commemorates Alphonse Mucha’s 150th birthday.

So who is Alphonse Mucha? Alphonse Maria Mucha was a Czech Art Nouveau painter and decorative artist best known for his distinct style and his images of women. He produced many paintings, illustrations, advertisements, and designs.

For a brief background of Alphonse Mucha’s biography, he was first recognized around the Christmas of 1894 when he happened to drop into a print shop where there was a sudden and unexpected need for a new advertising poster for a play starring Sarah Bernhardt, the most famous actress in Paris at that time. Mucha volunteered to make the poster. Come New Year of 1895, the advertisement for the play Gismonda by Victorien Sardou appeared on the streets of the city giving him overnight success. As such, his name was revealed and announced all over Paris. To Bernhardt’s joy, she immediately entered into a 6 year contract with Mucha.

That was the start of the success of Mucha. After that, he produced a lot of paintings, posters, advertisements, and book illustrations, as well as designs for jewellery, carpets, wallpaper, and theatre sets. He was able to set a trademark on his designs as “Mucha Style”.

“Mucha Style” gained international presence through the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris. He later on decorated the Bosnia and Herzegovina Pavilion and collaborated in the Austrian Pavilion. He later on died on a lung infection on July 14, 1939 after being released against the hands of the Gestapo who captured him during the peak of fascism in the late 1930s.

Today, Mucha’s style are being revived in several arts such as the Sailor Moon posters, and other designs. Happy 150th birthday Alphonse Mucha!

Medical Mystery or Hoax: Did Cheerleader Fake a Muscle Disorder?

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Desiree Jennings was living a dream come true. The 25-year-old had a marketing job at a major company, was married to a handsome, successful man, and had challenging hobbies: she was an avid runner, and a cheerleading ambassador for the Washington Redskins football team.

But almost overnight Jennings went from the picture of happiness and health, to a twisted, stuttering vision of pain and suffering.

After a routine flu shot last fall, Jennings said she began experiencing fever and painful body aches. The symptoms quickly progressed until she could only walk with a twisted, halting gait, and had trouble reading, doing simple math -- even remembering things. Her condition put a halt on her once-frenetic lifestyle.

"I want to work, I want to be doing something," she said. "But who's going to hire somebody who can't remember what they did the day before?"

Jennings developed another odd symptom -- a strange foreign accent; the Midwestern woman suddenly sounded British. "It sounds like an accent, but it's not. I just can't pronounce words anymore," she said.

But perhaps worse of all is what happens when Jennings tried to recall specific memories. In her "20/20" interview, Jennings' speech devolved to stuttering, then complete gibberish.

India's Cochin Haneefa dies
Actor-writer-director appeared in 380 films

Indian film actor-writer-director Cochin Haneefa died in Chennai Tuesday following complications arising from a chronic liver ailment. He was 61.

Haneefa had acted in more than 300 Malayalam-language films and 80 Tamil films. Born Salim Ahmed Ghoush, the actor was better known as Cochin Haneefa, his stage name for the Cochin Kalabhavan comedy troupe.

Haneefa began acting in villainous roles in Malayalam cinema, starting with "Mamangam" in 1979. He soon shifted to comedy and became enormously popular in humorous roles in Malayalam- and Tamil-language films.

Between 1984 and 1994, Haneefa also wrote and directed several features, including "Vatsalyam" (1993).

January saw the release of two of Haneefa's films, Tamil-language "Vettaikaran" and Malayalam-language "Bodyguard." His last release will be Tamil film "Madrasapattinam."

Hilo native BJ Penn favored in tough UFC 107 match

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Fans of mixed martial arts on the Big Island of Hawaii are anxiously awaiting the UFC 107 lightweight title main event between Hilo's BJ Penn and Diego "Nightmare" Sanchez on Saturday evening.

By 1:00 pm on Saturday, odds makers had champion Penn over Sanchez at -280.

The pay per view fight, being held in Memphis, Tennessee is expected to be seen around 7 pm Hawaii time. Loyal fans will no doubt pack the Penn Training and Fitness Center in The Prodigy's home town of Hilo to watch the fight, where a $5 donation to the BJ Penn Youth Foundation gets fans in the door.

Although the fans will be watching the bout in the very gym where the lightweight champion normally trains, BJ Penn has actually been training in San Clemente, California in recent weeks. Penn, whose regimen under Marv Marinovich was an apparent success in his victory over Kenny Florian in August, hopes the training will help him against the aggressive, tireless attack of Sanchez. Before leaving for the mainland to begin the training, Mayor Billy Kenoi declared BJ Penn Day on Hawaii Island in support of the Hilo native.

The two warriors will meet at 155 pounds, a weight where both man are dominant. Hawaii Tribune-Herald writer John Burnett reports that the 31 year old Penn has not lost a fight at 155 pounds in more than seven years. Meanwhile, the soon to be 29 year old Sanchez has never lost at 155 pounds.

This video, produced by MMA Weekly Videos and shared courtesy YouTube, shows an interview with Penn at the recent Pre-fight weigh in.

A man of two schools: Missoula's Jack Wade attended both App State and UM

Posted by DAREDEVIL

The last time Appalachian State University came to Missoula for a football playoff game, Jack Wade pulled a Mountaineers sweatshirt over his head and ventured – either bravely or foolishly, he’s not sure which – into Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

It was 2000, and the loyalties of Wade – a 1996 Appalachian State graduate who came to Missoula to attend graduate school at the University of Montana – were firmly entrenched with his alma mater back then.

“I’d only been here a couple of years,” he explains.

Now, nearly a decade later, the Mountaineers return to face Montana on Saturday with another berth in the national championship on the line, and Wade with a wardrobe decision to make.

“I may have an Appalachian State T-shirt on,” admits Wade, a broker with Lambros Real Estate, “but if I do, it’ll be under a Grizzly jacket. I’ve grown to be a bigger Griz fan over the years.”

The Dec. 9, 2000 game – the only time Montana and Appalachian State have ever met before – was a classic between schools that would come to own the pre-eminent FCS programs by the end of the decade.

The Mountaineers rallied from a 13-3 deficit in the fourth quarter to send it into overtime, where Montana quarterback Drew Miller’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Farris propelled the Grizzlies into the 2000 national title game with a 19-16 victory.

“Everyone talks about Drew Miller throwing the winning touchdown in overtime,” Wade says, “but what I remember was Appalachian State throwing (what would have been) the winning touchdown, and (Montana’s) cornerback knocking it down in the end zone.”

That came with about 20 seconds to play in regulation, and Appalachian State threatening from the Grizzlies’ 8 yard line. The Mountaineers settled for a tying field goal, got the ball first in OT, and took their first lead of the day at 16-13 on another Mark Wright field goal.

Miller’s pass to Farris followed.

“It was a riot that day,” Wade says. “I was in my Appalachian State sweatshirt, and I almost got my butt kicked several times.”

Wade attended the 2000 game with a friend from Appalachian State who also made her way west to Missoula for graduate school, Elizabeth Fricke. The two dated during their days at Appalachian State, Wade says, and have remained friends during their years in Missoula.

“In fact,” he says, “I introduced her to her eventual husband.”

Wade and Fricke are two of 72 Appalachian State graduates between 1969 and 2008 who now make their homes in Montana, according to the Appalachian State Alumni Office.

Fricke, who admits she’s not much of a football fan, period, remembers the last game mostly for the people from Boone she ran into who she knew.

“I went over to where our fans were sitting,” says the Boone native, “and I thought it was so funny that I knew people. But Boone is a small town.”

Fricke, now UM’s Outdoor Program manager, won’t be at Saturday’s game. She has an avalanche transceiver course to teach.

“But the class is on campus, so I’m sure we’ll hear the game,” she says. “I just think it’s neat that my hometown is coming to Missoula again.”

While she wasn’t much for attending Mountaineers games when she lived in Boone, and doesn’t frequent Grizzly games in Missoula, Fricke says it’s impossible to live in either place and not be well aware of what’s going on with their respective football teams.

“Whether you go to the games or not,” she says, “it’s what everybody all around you is talking about all the time.”

Wade, meantime, is a native of Buffalo, N.Y., who stumbled on Boone and Appalachian State after joining the Navy after high school.

“I was stationed in Virginia, I liked the mountains, and I ended up going to Boone a lot,” he says. “Boone is an amazing place. I really liked it, and liked all the outdoor opportunities there.”

Wade worked with the Outward Bound program while at Appalachian State and served on the ski patrol at nearby Sugar Mountain Ski Resort. When he went looking for a graduate school, outdoor opportunities were probably more important to him than the school itself, and Missoula was an easy choice.

He worked the ski patrol at Montana Snowbowl during the winters, and returned to North Carolina in the summers to work for Outward Bound while he pursued a master’s at UM in environmental studies that didn’t happen.

“My hard drive melted before I’d finished my thesis,” Wade says, “and by that time I knew I’d be going into a different field anyway, so I didn’t finish it.”

Missoula – and the Grizzlies – have turned him into much more of a football fan than he was the last time Appalachian State came to town, Wade says.

His four years in the Navy coincided with the Buffalo Bills’ four consecutive Super Bowl appearances, so he wasn’t around his hometown to get caught up in that. And the Mountaineers weren’t quite as successful when he was in college as they are now, so game days weren’t always must-goes.

“My love of football has blossomed since then,” says Wade, who is not a Grizzly season-ticket holder but does attend three to four games a year.

“I’m grateful, I have business partners and friends who do have season tickets, and I always seem to get to go to a few games,” he says. “I’ve taken my 3-year-old son, Avery, and have pictures of him waving at the jets flying overhead. He just loves it.”

Like Wade, Avery has Appalachian State as well as Grizzly gear to wear. Dad remains an ASU alum, after all, and Wade’s made sure his boss at Lambros, Dan Worrell – the Grizzlies’ kicker from 1968-70 – has seen Avery in it.

But unlike 2000, Wade will be pulling for the Grizzlies on Saturday, although he’s excited to see Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards in action, too.

“I think the Grizzlies, in their last few games, have really raised hopes around here,” he says, “and it’s going to be a treat to see Edwards play. I guess this is probably the first game I’ll have ever been to where I’m guaranteed not to be totally upset at the end, no matter what happens.”

Prairie View rallies past 'Bama A&M for SWAC title

Posted by DAREDEVIL

K.J. Black threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns, two coming in the fourth quarter, and the Panthers ralllied for a 30-24 win over Alabama A&M in the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game on Saturday.

"It's been a long time coming," said Prairie View coach Henry Frazier III. "Nobody on this staff, nobody on this team was born in 1964. This is a special time."

Frazier is the one most responsible for turning around a program that gained notoriety during the 1990s by losing 80 consecutive games.

"It's a special occasion," Frazier added. "I'm very proud of this football team."

Alabama A&M (7-5) led 21-17 early in the fourth quarter before a 23-yard touchdown pass from Black to Gabe Osaze-Ediae put Prairie View (9-1) ahead 23-17 with 11:21 to play.

Moments later, Alabama A&M quarterback Deaunte Mason lost the ball following a hit by Prairie View's Anthony Peck, and Quinton Spears made his second fumble recovery of the game for the Panthers. Black then connected with Anthony Weeden for a 22-yard touchdown pass and a 30-21 lead with 7 minutes remaining, and the Panthers held on from there.

"All anybody was talking about this year was a championship," Black said. "When you can see that in somebody's eyes and you know everybody is striving for the same goal, it makes you want to work that much harder. That collective effort got us to where we are right now."

The game lasted nearly 4 hours, thanks in part to 22 penalties and several replay reviews.

Alabama A&M had a long second-quarter touchdown pass wiped out by a holding penalty, and a late fourth-quarter TD toss overturned by the replay official, who ruled that receiver Quintin Carlock bobbled the ball and did not maintain possession in the end zone.

"Anytime you take seven points off the board, it's huge," said Alabama A&M coach Anthony Jones. "You're frustrated. Every time you got a big play, it was called back. Those were significant moments in this football game. And obviously, we could not overcome them."

The teams exchanged the lead six times in the game, and neither team led by more than four until Prairie View pulled away in the fourth quarter.

"It was a great football game on both sides," Frazier said. "We both made adjustments, we both countered. It was chess match out there. Both teams played extremely hard, and it came down to the last play. That's what you want in a championship game."

Osaze-Ediae had seven receptions for 106 yards, and Weeden had four catches for 82 yards. Donald Barbers led Prairie View on the ground with 78 yards and a touchdown.

The Bulldogs' Mason passed for 154 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 110 yards and another score. Tailback Ulysses Banks added 109 yards rushing and a touchdown.

It was the fourth SWAC championship game loss in the past 10 years for Alabama A&M, whose lone conference title during that span occurred in 2006.

The original dysfunctional family

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Dec. 11--For most, the holidays are a time of joy in which we re-connect and bond with loved ones. The holidays also remind some of us why we only spend one day a year with our mothers, brothers and sisters with their passive favoritism, staunch political views, painful noogie techniques and uneventful on-the-job stories that drag on and on and on.

Even in the middle ages, in days of kings, queens and wars won by sword, family gatherings weren't much different. Robidoux Resident Theatre's upcoming production of "The Lion in Winter" sets out to prove this point.

"We all have to go to these family functions this time of year and wonder how we get messed up with these people we call family, and this group makes you feel so much better about your family because no one is more dysfunctional than they are," says play director and RRT business manager Jeff Haney.

Set on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day of 1183, "The Lion in Winter" follows King Henry II, Queen Eleanor and their three sons, who are vying for the privilege of being named heir to the English throne. And while the kindred battle for the kingdom looms, Henry's affection for his mistress grows.

As if the growing tension wasn't enough, every family member contributes to the drama with their imperfections. Henry flies by the seat of his pants. Eleanor is greatly manipulative. Richard the Lionheart is a ticking time bomb. Jeffrey is cold and scheming. And John is the spoiled brat of the bunch.

The seven-person cast of Tad Hopkins, Joyce Stohr, Kenna Hall, Rylan Swank, Jeff Landers, Jonathan McClain and Jeremy White appears ready and willing to take on the double-crossing, alliance-shifting roles.

"It's a really nice role in my case for an older woman. Not aged, just older," laughs Stohr, who plays Eleanor. "I thought it was a real bounty to tackle something with that range of emotion."

Henry and Eleanor's relationship anchors the play, largely due to the dynamic between the two vastly different characters.

At 50 years old, Henry knows death is near in his day and age. Therefore, he acts with spontaneity and emotion.

"My character has a great deal of charm, but he's also very dishonest, so I do feel there's a lot to like about him, but equally as much to dislike," says Tad Hopkins, who plays Henry.

Meanwhile, Eleanor is a strong and loving woman who once stole the heart of Henry, a man 11 years her junior.

"Even in 1183, she was one of the first cougars," Haney laughs.

After being imprisoned for 10 years, however, Henry has grown fond of his mistress Alais, and now Eleanor fears she is the other woman. Hmm... this almost sounds like an episode of "Sex and the City."

"Sex and power is a fascinating subject," Haney says. "Sex drives all of us, even the most powerful people in the world are driven by it. You know, we could bring up Tiger (Woods) right now. It defines us."

Although the play uses actual historical figures as characters, the drama and dialogue are fictitious and, more importantly, modern. The play was written in the mid-1960s by James Goldman and adapted for a film starring Katharine Hepburn and Peter O' Toole in 1968. So no Old English here. Just present-day wit and drama.

"There's so much about this play that's clever and it asks the audience to think as well as feel," Stohr says. "For people who like clever, witty pieces, this is going to be something they will find a real treat."

"The Lion in Winter" also examines war and finds that it is often the emotional leaders more than political policy that dictate it.

"There are lines in the play where you can tell these kings are just barbarians," Hopkins says.

While the play wavers between drama, intrigue and humor, one thing always remains the same: The egos of the characters. Haney says that is what has made "The Lion in Winter" such a fascinating classic.

"People can't possibly say those things to each other and do those things to each other. It's a big play with big characters," Haney says. "And that's why I wanted the set to be so big. I wanted 20-foot columns. Everything's big because there's nothing small about them."

Army Navy Game Finishes Army's Bowl Hopes

Posted by DAREDEVIL

It is storied rivalry, perhaps the most storied rivalry in NCAA sports. It is the Army - Navy game, specifically in football, and it has a long history which, because the two teams are no longer relevant on a national level, is more important to the two schools and branches of the military than anyone else. Still, the 2009 Army - Navy game had Army on the cusp of a bowl bid, at least for 60 minutes.

In the 2009 game, once again Navy defeated Army's Black Knights. By doing so, it ended Army's hopes for a bowl bid. The Midshipmen now have an eight-game winning streak in the Army - Navy game series, in fact, and at 9-4 already have a postseason date against Missouri in the Texas Bowl on Dec. 31.

Meanwhile, Army entered the Army - Navy game hoping to finish the season at .500 and 6-6, but failing that, with a loss ended at 5-7. They would have played in the EagleBank Bowl with a win. That bowl is now filled with Temple vs. UCLA at RFK Stadium in Washington on Dec. 29.

This time the Army - Navy game ended with a 17-3 win for Navy.
Ricky Dobbs ran for a score to set an NCAA single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 24. He also threw a TD pass, helping Navy improve to 54-49-7 overall against Army. This is the biggest lead for Navy in a series that began in 1890.

Ricky Dobbs had been in a three-way tie for rushing TDs by a quarterback. He had been even with Air Force’s Chance Harridge (2002) and Florida’s Tim Tebow (2007, his Heisman Trophy year).

Navy has won a service academy-record 15 consecutive games against Army and Air Force. Navy’s last loss to a service academy was against Air Force in 2002.

The 2009 Army - Navy game wasn't as easy as it sounds or as the records might indicate. Army actually led 3-0 at halftime. It was the first time Army led at halftime in the series since 2001. It was also the first time Navy was shutout in the first half of the series since 1993. Finally, it the first time Army led against Navy since the first quarter of the 2006 game.

The Army - Navy game win gave Navy the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy. That is awarded to the team with the best record in games between the three service academies. This is a school-record seventh straight year that Navy has won the trophy.

Heisman Trophy Presentation 2009 Has Higher Drama Than Usual

Posted by DAREDEVIL

The Heisman Trophy presentation 2009 is hours away, as the Downtown Athletic Club crowns a new legend. But the Heisman Trophy presentation 2009 could go to any one of five budding legends, presumably. Some nominees are bigger favorites than most, and this award isn't usually prone to

upsets. However, it is a relatively wide open field at the Heisman Trophy presentation this year, as befitting this wide open 2009 season.

If there is a favorite tonight, it is probably Alabama's Mark Ingram. That is due in part to leading the No. 1 team in the nation, to his big performance against Florida last week - and since Alabama may be due for a Heisman Trophy. The Tide are highly decorated, but have never had the best player in the nation in a given year. Ingram is their best hope in a long time to change that.

If star power means anything at the Heisman Trophy presentation, then Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow are favored. In any other circumstances, they might be, since McCoy is due for a Heisman and Tebow is still trying to win two. But Tebow all but killed his chances last week, and McCoy was a second away from destroying his as well. However, McCoy was regarded as the favorite before last week, and took home many College Football Awards on Thursday, so he still has a shot.

The dark horse in the race may be Stanford's Toby Gerhart, the second running back in the race. Gerhart didn't lead his team to a BCS title shot, but carried them on his back to a rare winning season. If the 2009 Heisman race is for the most valuable player to a team, then Gerhart may have a leg up.

But the most electrifying figure at the 2009 Heisman Trophy presentation may be a late contender. Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh has been the best defensive player in years, but had his national coming-out party against Texas last week. That has fueled the call for Suh to win, even though defensive tackles almost never win the award.

Save the Navy Seals

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Save the Navy Seals is one of these campaigns that seems emtirely valid on the face of it but then fails when the details are examined. The basic facts of the case are well explained by my colleague.

According to multiple reports, three United States Navy SEALs have been charged in connection with an alleged assault on a suspected terrorist. The three SEALs have requested trial by court-martial instead of non-judicial punishment (NJP).

That's the facts as they are. The allegations are that while arresting an alleged terrorist (supposedly responsible for the murders of those four Blackwater employees) they either punched the arrestee in the mouth or abdomen. The Save the Navy Seals campaign is arguing that they should not be tried for these actions. Heres Rep. Dan Burton arguing this point.

Here's Michelle Malkin on the subject:

Human Events has posted a petition to free the Navy SEALs who’ve been hauled up for court martials after an infamous jihadi in Iraq (the same one who masterminded the ambush of Blackwater contractors whose bodies were burned and hung on a bridge in Fallujah) accused them of punching him in the stomach during a raid earlier this fall.

Sadly there's a desperate misunderstanding of the case going on here. Let us start from the beginning.

Allegations are made: that the Navy Seals broke the law while arresting this man.

This leads us to two further things. We would like to know whether they did in fact break the law. For having agents of the State being allowed to beat us up with no proof....well, that's actually one of the things that the American Revolution was all about in the first place.

But much, much more important than that is this. Allegations have been made. So, how do those Navy Seals clear their names? How do they show that the allegations are not true? Or that their actions were justifiable? We have a system to do this. It's called a trial.

Don't forget, the point of a trial (whether it's a civilian one or a military court martial) is not simply to identify the guilty (and then to punish them). It's also, and hugely more importantly so, to identify the innocent.

How can these Navy Seals show that they did not break the law when arresting this man? By us shouting that they should not be tried? No, absolutely not. Only by their being tried and then being found not guilty. That is the way that our society formally states: you did not do this, you did not break the law.

All of which is, of course, precisely why those Navy Seals have asked for a trial, so that they can show themselves to be not guilty. So to argue that they should not have their day in court, where they can prove their innocence, seems very odd indeed really. Give them what they have asked for, a trial so they can clear their names.

Griz beat Appalachian State 24-17, advance to national championship

Posted by DAREDEVIL

The third-ranked Montana Grizzlies downed fifth-ranked Appalachian State 24-17 an an FCS semifinal playoff game on Saturday at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

The Griz (14-0) will face Villanova in Friday's FCS championship in Chattanooga, Tenn. The game will be televised by ESPN2 at 6 p.m. It will be Montana's sixth trip to the title game. The Griz came home with the national championship in 1995 and 2001.

The Griz struck first on a 39-yard TD burst by Chase Reynolds. After stopping the Mountaineers on fourth-and-5, the Griz drove 63 yards in seven plays to take the lead with 7:50 to play in the opening quarter.

Appalachian State, which finished its season at 11-3, tied the game at 7-7 by putting together an eight-play, 80-yard scoring drive early in the second quarter. Under heavy pressure, App State quarterback Armanti Edwards got the ball to Brian Quick for a 34-yard gain to the UM 3-yard line. Devon Moore got the final 3 yards for the score.

Appalachian State took a 10-7 lead on a 46-yard field goal by Jason Vitaris with 5:16 to play before intermission. The field goal capped a 10-play, penalty-plagued drive.

Montana's first drive of the second half was all Reynolds. The Drummond product caught a swing pass for 24 yards and rushed for 24 more, getting the final 7 yards for the TD to put Montana ahead 14-10 with 13:22 to play in the third quarter.

The Mountaineers went back ahead following an interception by Jacque Roman, who returned the ball to the 50-yard line. Appalachian used nine plays to move 50 yards, capped by 1-yard run by Moore to put the Mountaineers on top 17-14 with 3:52 to play in the third quarter.

The Griz came right back to tie the game at 17-17 on a 32-yard field goal by Brody McKnight. Behind the hard running of Reynolds, the Griz drove the ball 61 yards before stalling on the App State 15-yard line.

After holding App State to a failed field goal attempt, the Griz drove 73 yards, capped by a 25-yard scoring pass from Selle to Jabin Sambrano to take a 24-17 lead with 1:30 to play. Sambrano made a spectacular grab along the sideline in the end zone.

App State's final drive ended on the UM 4-yard line. With one second left, Edwards threw to Quick, but the pass was broken up in the end zone by Trumaine Johnson.

Gill appears to be Kansas' choice as head coach

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Buffalo coach and former Nebraska quarterback Turner Gill appears to be the choice as the new coach at Kansas.

ESPN.com's Joe Schad is reporting that two sources briefed on the situation have said that Gill is the choice to replace Mark Mangino.

Gill has appeared to be the favorite for the job since Mangino resigned on Dec. 3.

In a lot of ways, Gill appears to be a 180-degree departure from Mangino, whose coaching and discipline tactics were blasted by several former and current players.

Gill has the reputation of being a popular coach among players. His daughter, Jordan, is a Kansas student who works in the athletic department offices.

His career record is 20-30 in a four-season stint as Buffalo's head coach. Gill directed the Bulls to the International Bowl last season, but Buffalo missed a bowl trip in a 5-7 season in 2009.

Earlier, he served as an assistant coach at Nebraska from 1992-2004 and with the Green Bay Packers in 2005.

The former Nebraska player has a lot of name recognition that resonates throughout the Big 12 area.

The fact he grew up in Fort Worth and has some existing connections with Texas high-school coaches will be critical in his attempts to build his program. Mangino did a good job of attracting under-recruiting prospects from Texas like Todd Reesing, Dezmon Briscoe and Maxwell Onyegbule.

Gill will have to do that and more as he attempts to match Mangino's record of notching back-to-back bowl trips in 2007 and 2008 for the first time in school history.

It will be a tough chore with Bo Pelini having his alma mater pointed in the right direction at Nebraska. Arch-rival Missouri appears to be in good shape with Blaine Gabbert as the quarterback for the next two seasons.

She claims,

"Sometimes I looked like a rag doll after we'd made love," she told the paper. "He really did like it quite rough. He wanted to spank me and loved pulling my hair as we had sex. He also liked me to talk dirty to him, but hair-pulling was what really turned him on. All he wanted me for was sex," and said he was "a selfish, heartless man. (see article: Tiger Woods mistress Number 5 says they had sex in same house as wife)

why are we obsessed to see pictures of the women he had affairs with? Because his life is interesting and our lives are boring? Or is it that our lives are better than his at this moment in time?

yes he is a snake who can get a hole in one both on and off the field...

oh the sex jokes keeps on coming when it is Tiger Woods.
