Discover(R) Small Business WatchSM: Small Business Economic Confidence Plunges to Lowest Level in Nine Months

Cash Flow Concerns Increase, Economic Conditions Worsen

EXPECTATIONS ARE LOW FOR THE HOLIDAYS

46% of Small Business Owners Expect Lower Sales Over 2008

RIVERWOODS, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Economic confidence among America's small business owners plummeted in November, as more owners cited serious concerns about cash flow and saw economic conditions for their own businesses getting worse. The Discover(R) Small Business WatchSM index fell 12 points in November to 76.5 from 88.5 in October.

"Fading confidence among small business owners could be tied to their low expectations for the upcoming holiday season, as 46 percent are forecasting decreased sales and 39 percent are expecting to hold the line," said Ryan Scully, director of Discover's business credit card. "However, we saw drops in optimism across the board, so it's hardly just one factor causing the concern."

The mood of small business owners generally has soured in November for three straight years, as economic confidence dropped from October to November in 2007 and 2008. The November 2008 index of 67.5 is the low point for the Watch since it started in August 2006.

November Highlights:

-- 52 percent of owners say they have experienced cash flow issues in the
past 90 days, up from 44 percent in October. Forty-one percent of owners
say they have not experienced cash flow issues, which is the lowest
response in this category since the Watch began. The remaining 6 percent
said they weren't sure.
-- 53 percent of small business owners see conditions getting worse in the
next six months, up from 43 percent in October; while 19 percent report
that conditions are improving, a sharp decline from 29 percent in
October; 23 percent see conditions as the same, and 5 percent weren't
sure.
-- 62 percent of small business owners rate the economy as poor, an
increase from 55 percent in October; 30 percent rate it as fair, and 8
percent say it is good or excellent.
-- 53 percent of small business owners think the overall economy is getting
worse, up from 44 percent in October but still significantly lower than
the 69 percent of owners who felt that way in February 2009, the last
time the Watch index was this low. For November; 28 percent say the
economy is getting better, down from 35 percent in October; 16 percent
see it staying the same, and 3 percent are not sure.

Only 11 percent of Small Businesses Expecting Increased Sales This Year

Small business owners have a glum outlook on the holiday season: Only 11 percent expect to see more business this year over last, while 46 percent of them are expecting less business than last year, an increase over the 40 percent who said the same in November 2008; 39 percent anticipate 2009 sales will be about the same as last year, and 4 percent weren't sure.

For many small business owners, the holiday season is not necessarily their busiest time. A majority of owners, 56 percent, say that the holiday season falls somewhere in between being their busiest and the slowest time of year, 29 percent say this is their slowest time, and 13 percent say it is the busiest.

Discount Department Stores Still Most Popular for Holiday Shopping

This month the Watch also polled 3,000 consumers on issues important to small businesses. When asked to choose from a list of places where they expect to do most of their holiday shopping, they chose the following:

-- Discount department stores, 30 percent
-- Department stores, 18 percent
-- Warehouse and club stores, 7 percent
-- Small retail and specialty stores, 7 percent
-- Electronics retailers, 5 percent
-- Some other type of store, 9 percent
-- Not sure, 23 percent

These shopping-preference percentages were little changed from what they were in 2008.

When it comes to the Internet, 57 percent of consumers said that they will do at least some of their shopping online this year.

Squeeze on Credit

Twenty-four percent of small business owners say that they extend credit to customers, and 73 percent of those that extend credit say that they have customers who have delayed or asked to delay a payment in the last three months. This is largely unchanged from December 2008 when 25 percent said they were extending credit, and 72 percent said that they had customers who delayed or asked to delay a payment.

Helping Out the Little Guy

What would you do if that convenient corner market or neighborhood hardware store near you suddenly closed? Did you ever consciously make a point to use a small business in the hope that your patronage would help keep it open? If so, you're in good company - 68 percent of consumers say that they have made purchases at a small business in an effort to keep it from closing.

The views and opinions expressed by small business owners and consumers who participate in the Small Business Watch survey are their own and do not necessarily reflect those of Discover Financial Services or its affiliates.

About the Small Business Watch

The Discover Small Business Watch is a monthly index measuring the relative economic confidence of U.S. small business owners who have less than five employees, a segment that consists of 22 million businesses producing more than a trillion dollars in annual receipts. The Watch is based on a national random survey of 750 small business owners. It is commissioned by Discover Business card, which strives to offer the best business credit card for American small businesses, and is conducted by Rasmussen Reports, LLC (www.rasmussenreports.com), an independent survey research firm. The numeric index is calculated by assigning values to responses to a set of six consistent questions. The base value of the Watch was established at 100.0 based on surveys conducted in August 2006. In addition to generating the index, the Small Business Watch surveys small business owners every month on key issues, and polls 3,000 consumers four times per year to gauge purchasing behavior and attitudes towards small businesses. Grady Sizemore Pictures: Slugger Cries Foul On Sexy Shots "Stolen" from GF Brittany Binger's Phone

Posted by DAREDEVIL

CLEVELAND (CBS/AP) More than a dozen steamy photos of all-star center fielder Grady Sizemore have made their way to Web sites across the Internet, but the Cleveland Indians star complains the shots were "stolen" from his girlfriend's e-mail and says that he is taking legal action.

Sizemore said that the nearly-nude pictures, including one where he is completely naked except for a tea cup covering his privates, were only meant for his girlfriend Playboy playmate Brittany Binger.

(AP Photo )
Photo: Cleveland Indians' Grady Sizemore rounding the bases July 26, 2009.

"These pictures were stolen illegally from my girlfriend's e-mail," Sizemore told The Cleveland Plain Dealer this weekend.

"It's now a legal matter that is under investigation. I can't say anything more."

Indians general manager, Mark Shapiro, said that he has not seen the pictures, but will "look into it," accodring to the paper.

The photos were taken with a cell-phone camera and show the major-leaguer alone, in various states of undress, in front of a bathroom mirror.

In some the shots he is fully clothed, and in others, he's wearing little to no clothing.

A Major League Baseball investigator contacted a number of the websites posting images this weekend and asked that they be taken down.

One of the sites still featured the shots Monday morning, but also posted the note from the official.

The message said the pictures were stolen from a personal computer and directed the site to preserve any related records in anticipation of a criminal complaint.

We fully support Grady as he deals with this personal matter," the Indians said in a statement Monday. "The posted photos were stolen from his girlfriend's e-mail account and a legal investigation is under way."

The 27-year-old Sizemore is the Indians' most popular player. His fan base includes "Grady's Ladies," and several other women's groups devoted to the three-time All-Star.

With a rare combination of speed and power, Sizemore has developed into one of baseball's best all-around players. He is one of only two players in club history to hit 30 homers and steal 30 bases in one season.

A two-time Gold Glove winner, Sizemore has endeared himself to Cleveland fans with his hustle and durability. In 2006 and 2007, he played in all 162 regular-season games, but he was limited to just 106 games last season.

Sizemore suffered an elbow injury and sports hernia during spring training in 2009 and was never 100 percent. He batted a career-low .248 with 18 homers and 64 RBIs before he deciding to stop playing on Sept. 4. He underwent two offseason surgeries.

My foray into Cyber Monday is a failure, thanks to American Girl

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Nearly 100 million people are shopping on the Internet today for "Cyber Monday," the online equivalent to Black Friday and what could be the biggest single day for online sales this year.

But I'm not one of them.

I tried. But - and here's a warning to other moms thinking a few American Girl bargains could be nice under the Christmas tree - that company's Web site wasn't capable of taking my order.

Or anyone else's, it appears, at least after a certain point this morning.

My shopping style doesn't often work for online deals: I like to browse, I'm not always confident that what I see online is what I want, I hate shipping charges - even though I know that they could equal costs of gas and time to drive to a store - and I like to touch what I'm buying, partially to make sure that the quality is really what it seems. I also think it's important to buy locally when I can.

But I felt very "cyber" this morning when I succumbed to a deal email from American Girl.

We've had some American Girl debate in our home for a few months. My daughter is 11, nearing the age when dolls will seem quaint. But she's also loved the entire American Girl phenomenon, and both of us aren't quite ready to let her doll years pass.

So the email caught my attention: "Mini Mystery" books for $2, a snowboard set, Kit's kitchen stove, the $5 doll hoodie, the $13 Nintendo DS game - all sounded great.

I scrolled to the end of the deals, then decided that I'd bite on some of these.

And that's when the morning took a turn.

Nintendo game: Already sold out.

$5 hoodie. Went into the cart, but then unavailable for checkout.

The stove or snowboard set? Should I get the bib overalls (on sale) or the coat, snowpants and hat set (much cuter)? Is it really worth getting the books if they're pushing my shipping costs higher?

In the end, it didn't matter.

Early on, I got page warnings that the server couldn't process my request.

And by the time I was comfortable with my order, it wouldn't go through. And now, three hours later, I can't even get to my "checkout" page.

I find that kind of ironic, given all of the Cyber Monday hype about how easy, convenient and inexpensive online shopping should be today.

According to the National Retail Federation, “Americans appreciate the convenience of shopping online, which doesn’t require standing in line, circling for a parking spot, or even changing out of your pajamas,” said Scott Silverman, Executive Director of Shop.org. “Online retailers have been working overtime to make sure their Cyber Monday promotions are enticing, so shoppers can expect incredible bargains on popular holiday items, percentages off entire websites, and a lot of free shipping.”

According to the survey, 91.5 percent of Cyber Monday shoppers - or 88.2 million Americans - will shop from home on Cyber Monday while 13.5 percent, or 13 million people, will shop from work.

I'm among the people who tried to shop from home. And now I'm trying to get my order filled while at work (note to my boss: part of it is for accuracy). Apparently my best option is the old-fashioned kind. American Girl is telling me to phone their toll-free number.

But now I'm also among the Cyber Monday failures. Not sure how many of us are out there right now, but that's the report I'm going to want to see when today is over - how many online retailers couldn't even fill their orders.

Ed Mezvinsky, Father of Marc Mezvinsky, Pioneered Nigerian Money Scam

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Ed Mezvinsky's nickname among pool reporters in the 1970s was "Fast Talkin' Eddie." The former star athlete turned politician spent four years in the U.S. House of Representatives before going into business for himself, hatching a string of fraudulent activity the FBI later said infiltratate nearly every one of his business deals between 1980 and 2000.

Ed Mezvinsky and Marjorie Margolies-MezvinskyCorbis After pleading guilty to 31 of 69 charges of bank fraud, mail fraud and wire fraud in 2001, Mezvinsky went on to serve federal prison time and was released April 11, 2008. Mezvinsky was a Philadelphia lawyer and self-styled international businessman who in some ways was a pioneer scam artist. Before the Nigerian advance fee scam became a ubiquitous experience in Americans' email in-boxes, Mezvinsky was deftly executing the scam in real time, convincing victims to hand over large amounts of cash based on his close connections to the Clinton family.

Mezvinsky would later claim that he was suffering from bipolar disease, which led him to the life of crime. In all, the FBI says Mezvinsky took in about $10 million, and described him as a one-man crimewave. It was a far fall for the former Democratic congressman, who raised 11 children, most of the adopted, with his wife, Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky.

In 2003, the Des Moines Register ran a lengthy article detailing his crimes, and his experiences heading to prison. From the Register:
Mezvinsky's victims were friends, friends of friends, even his mother-in-law. He was a public figure, so victims trusted him, sure he wouldn't jeopardize his and his wife's political ambitions.

He also extracted money from clients he had promised to represent as an attorney. Mezvinsky got his law degree from the University of California-Berkeley in 1965 but spent little time practicing law.
Mezvinsky was released from prison in April, 2008, and hopefully his scheming is behind him as his son, Marc Mezvinsky, prepares to marry former first daughter Chelsea Clinton. Both of political pedigrees with Ivy League educations, the pair seem primed for a life in politics.

Cyber Monday Zhu Zhu Pet Hamster deals at Toys R Us

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Toys R" Us claims to be getting shipments of Zhu Zhu Pet Hamsters, but don't expect to see the new 2010 Zhu Zhu Hamsters Jilly, Winkie, Scuddles and Nugget anytime soon. Amazon and Ebay have Zhu Zhu Pet Hamsters if you don't mind shelling out a good bit of cash for these cute and cuddly little robotic hamsters.

Toys "R" Us and Zhu Zhu Pets

All the kids want a Zhu Zhu Pet, but it's getting harder and harder to find them, if you can find them at all. The Toys "R" Us around the corner in Warwick, Rhode Island can't be reached as the phone has been off the hook all morning. Their online shopping site shows Zhu Zhu Pets as still being Out-Of-Stock. The only advice with Toys "R" Us is to keep after them, and if you're really desperate, show up early when they open.

Amazon.com has plenty of the furry little Zhu Zhu critters but they're not cheap. A recent visit to Amazon.com revealed the white Zhu Zhu Pet Hamster "Chunk" is going for a low of $40.00, while the cuddly gray Zhu Zhu Hamster "Num Nums" is priced higher at $62.00. Accessories are also available, although priced higher than what Toys "R" Us is supposedly selling them for.

Burl Ives narrated this gem that heralds the start of all great Christmas programming, like the classic "Grinch," and "Charlie Brown's Christmas".

Etched forever in my heart is the classic Rankin/Bass effort from 1964: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Burl Ives narrated this gem that heralds the start of all great Christmas programming, like the classic "Grinch," and "Charlie Brown's
Christmas".

This Christmas tale premiered on NBC back in 1964, and the Rudolph story has become one of the longest running, highest rated television specials ever.

Trivia time: TV producer Arthur Rankin had to perform Herculean efforts to get the rights to use the actual "Rudolph" Christmas song.

The tale, told by author and TV historian Rick Goldschmidt from "The Enchanted World of Rankin/Bass" goes that Rankin personally swayed "Rudolph" composer Johnny Marks. "He was very protective of the song. The song provided a very large income to Marks and he was afraid that over exposure of the hit song might interfere with it's success as a popular song. He was a neighbor of mine at the time and I eventually persuaded him to do the show and he wrote some very memorable songs in addition to Rudolph."

The navigational chops of 'the most famous reindeer of all' will illuminate Santa Claus' way into the Christmas season, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" will be broadcast on CBS this Wednesday, Dec. 2

Chelsea Clinton engaged to boyfriend

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Chelsea Clinton, 29, the daughter of former US president Bill Clinton and the secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, has become engaged to her boyfriend, the investment banker Marc Mezvinsky. The couple sent an email to friends on Friday announcing the news. They said they were looking at a wedding next summer. Mezvinsky is a son of a former Pennsylvania representative, Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky and a former Iowa representative, Ed Mezvinsky, longtime friends of the Clintons. Ed Mezvinsky was released from prison last year after pleading guilty in 2002 to charges of fraud.

Chelsea Clinton engaged to boyfriend Marc Mezvinsky -- for real this time

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Chelsea Clinton has announced her engagement to longtime boyfriend Marc Mezvinsky -- via e-mail.

How Etiquette 2.0!

The Ministry means that in a good way -- this way we know it's for real, unlike the last time they "got engaged."

The text of the e-mail sent Friday, as reported by @jaketapper over at ABC News:

"We're sorry for the mass e-mail but we wanted to wish everyone a belated Happy Thanksgiving! We also wanted to share that we are engaged! We didn't get married this past summer despite the stories to the contrary, but we are looking toward next summer and hope you all will be there to celebrate with us. Happy Holidays! Chelsea & Marc."

Mezvinsky, whom she first met in D.C. and then got to know better at Stanford University before they began dating, also has political parents. Chelsea and Marc been dating since 2005 -- he's an investment banker now, and she's in grad school at Columbia University.

During the most recent presidential primaries, the former first daughter broke her policy of not speaking to the media (as was her practice since dad Bill Clinton was president), and campaigned for her mom, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The Ministry is pleased that Chelsea is respecting its completely arbitrary "Don't get married before you're 30" edict. She's 29 now, but with a February birthday she'll hit the Ministry's magic number in plenty of time for the ceremony.

We're guessing she has ignored our "Don't vote till you're 25" corollary, however.

We get a lot of heat for that one. Doesn't mean it's wrong

How to Tell if a Cyber Monday Sale Is a Good Deal

Posted by DAREDEVIL

The online holiday shopping season officially kicks off today with online retailers offering Cyber Monday deals ranging from from free shipping and free gift cards to limited-time discounts.

But not all the deals offered are real steals and better prices can sometimes be found elsewhere. Here are some suggestions on how to figure out if a sales price is, in fact, the best offer available.

One tactic is to compare the price available at a retailer like Amazon.com or Walmart.com, which carry multiple brands, with the price for the product at a given brand’s site. The Consumerist blog, for instance, in its post today “Watch Out For Cyber Monday Non-Deals,” noted that Amazon.com is selling the Apple “Magic Mouse” device for $129, but it’s available for less at the Apple Store.

Another method suggested by the blogs Gizmodo and Lifehacker is to visit the site LogicBuy and see if anything better than the price listed on a retailer’s site is offered elsewhere online. On LogicBuy, for example, you can compare the prices for various Cyber Monday deals available on Amazon.com with offerings on sites like PriceGrabber.com. (Many of the Amazon.com deals do appear to be good.)

A similar method, covered in the Bucks blog last week in the post “How to Compare Prices in Retail Price Wars,” is to go directly to other comparison shopping sites like PriceGrabber.com, bizrate and Shopping.com and compare prices.

What kinds of deals are you finding online today? What strategies are you using to find the best Cyber Monday deals?

Sarah Palin Bans Media From December 2nd “College Of The Ozarks” Speech

Posted by DAREDEVIL

On December 2nd 2009 Sarah Palin will give a speech at the College of the Ozarks, however unlike past speeches which have been ridiculed by the media, the event will probably not receive the same type of backlash, but only because the former Alaskan governors contract with the school prohibits any members of the media from attending the December 2nd speech in Springfield, Missouri.

Elizabeth Andrews, the schools public relations director, told the News-Leader that the contractual obligation was a “mutual” agreement. She continued by stating that members of the media could attempt to receive free tickets to the event, however video and audio recording equipment would be prohibited.

If you’re a member of the media and you want to catch Palin outside of the event she’s be signing copies of her book “Going Rogue” at the local Springfield Borders before the College of the Ozarks Speech.

Since we can’t cover the event we plan to travel to Russia and just scream questions to her when she’s sitting on her porch staring at us.

American serial killer Tommy Lynn Sells today confessed to the murder of Katy Harris and slashing the throat of Krystal Surles.

It was ten years ago in Texas 1999, when in the still of the night 10 year old Krystal Surles throat was cut after watching her friends murder.

It was her will to live that brought a serial killer to his justice.

Sells revisited the crime scene with Texas Rangers and recounted the attack and demonstrated the way he attacked the girls.

According to Sells he was 16 years old when he committed his first murder.

When he was working as a carny in Missouri in 1985, he met 29 year old Ena Cordt. He says that he was invited to her home for consensual sex. Three days later the bodies of Ena Cordt and her son of four years old were found.

How to Survive and Make the Most of Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Black Friday and Cyber Monday mark the unofficial beginning of the holiday shopping season, and are the two biggest shopping days of the year. On the Friday following Thanksgiving, herds of consumers line up outside stores for break-of-dawn openings and door-buster deals. Cyber Monday has become Black Friday's Web counterpart, with online retailers offering steep discounts and pushing more units than on any other day of the year. Part of the manic atmosphere comes from many retailers' offering a limited number of each item, so knowing the deals beforehand and devising a plan of action is essential for surviving the discount madness.

When it comes to plotting your shopping course, you'll have to decide what deals are most important. For those craving the DIY route, they can peruse the endless piles of Black Friday and Cyber Monday ads by visiting sites like blackfriday.info, bfads.net, and cybermonday.com. These outlets merely collect all the various sales and present them to you unfiltered, although both bfads.net and blackfriday.info will let you assemble shopping lists while you browse the site.

If you're less inclined to do the legwork and are just happy to get a deal (even if it's not the best deal), there are plenty of shopping and electronics sites that have already gone through and picked out their favorite bargains:

* U.S. News & World Report has one of the more thorough round-ups out there. Find out where to go for $60 GPS units, $10 Wii games, and even a super-cheap KitchenAid Stand Mixer.
* Gizmodo, which cuts through all the noise to bring you the best tech deals, breaks products up by category and puts them in easy-to-read bullet list.
* Dealnews also sticks to gadgets, but focuses on big ticket items like televisions and laptops.
* WalletPop tells you which stores will have the best deals on everything from games to tools.

Cyber Monday guides are much harder to come by, although both Consumerist and WalletPop have good round-ups of the Web deals available.

If you insist on taking part of the brick-and-mortar madness that is Black Friday, here are a few tips to help you make the most of your shopping experience:

* You will likely only get a shot at one big ticket item -- so choose wisely.
* Show up early. Many stores will open at 5 a.m. or earlier, and true fanatics will camp out the night before to be first in line.
* Check reviews on sites like Amazon and CNET before you buy; there's a reason that 37-inch TV is only $300.
* Gizmodo suggests skipping digital cameras entirely. Much better deals are to be had online.
* Read the fine print, and come armed with printed ads to avoid getting ripped off.
* Remain calm, and leave the weaponry at home. Or better yet, do all your shopping online; it's safer that way.

Remember, these aren't the only two days to pick up items on sale. As the holiday season progresses, you'll see more mark-downs. So, be safe, have fun, and do your best to enjoy the holiday and the ensuing shopping spree.

(Media-Newswire.com) - The Tiger Woods affair claims were brought out with Rachel Uchitel pictures and the mysterious friend in the National Enquirer newspaper who claims Uchitel is having an affair with the golfer. The friend claims that Uchitel told her of her involvement with the golfer. Over the past several days, Uchitel has vigirously denied such matters and even hired famed lawyer Gloria Allred.

The National Enquirer was reported to get this information from a friend of Uchitel's who according to the paper was given a lie detector test along with providing other corroborating information as to the matter.

No word yet from Woods or his team.

Woods recently was involved in a minor car wreck outside his home in Florida just after Thanksgiving.

Govt denies ombudsman for telecom sector

Posted by DAREDEVIL

The government today ruled out appointing an ombudsman to redress the complaints of poor mobile telephony services, like call drops, saying state-run BSNL and MTNL were taking effective steps to upgrade technology.

Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Telecom Sachin Pilot said, while the telecom revolution had led India to having one of the world’s cheapest call rates, it had also led to congestion in network, causing call drops.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) are taking effective steps like upgrading technology and putting in more efforts to improve quality.

“The direct answer to his question is no,” he said when asked whether the government would set up an independent ombudsman to address complaints like call drops.

Telcom Minister A Raja said the per-second metering of call, recently introduced by major mobile operators, was to ensure consumers were not made to pay for full one minute when the call might not have lasted more than a few seconds because of call drop.

He said he was “not bothered” about companies losing revenue in the per-second billing so long as consumers were benefited.

The government was providing a level playing field to public and private telecom operators, he added.

Pilot said teledensity or number of telephones per 100 persons, had increased from 9 per cent in 2005 to 44 per cent now. In metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai, it is more than 100 per cent, but is just 16-18 per cent in rural areas.

BSNL will set up 10,000 towers by March 2010 and 15,000 towers by March 2011 to improve mobile telephony.

The Universal Service Obligation (USO) Fund — a corpus created from 5 per cent revenue that companies earned from providing mobile telephony in cities — will be used to increase rural teledensity and provide wireless broadband connections in villages.

On the issue of profitability of BSNL as compared to private companies, he said the state-run firm was saddled with 300,000 employees and one-third of its revenue went towards meeting staff cost. In comparison, the largest private telecom company might have 20,000 employees, consuming 5-8 per cent of the total revenue.

BSNL, he said, had a market share of 77 per cent in landline telephones, 60 per cent in broadband connections and 13.3 per cent in mobile telephones. The decline in the market share had been arrested during the past 12 months and the company was increasing marketing activity.

Nuclear plant radiation leak leaves 55 employees sick

Posted by DAREDEVIL

About 55 employees working in Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant in Uttara Kannada district suffered minor nuclear radiation after drinking contaminated water in the plant.

The employees working in the first maintenance unit of the plant were treated for increasing level of tritium after they drank water from a water cooler in the operating area on November 24, official sources told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Tritium, also known as Hydrogen-3, is used in research, fusion reactors and neutron generators.

Urine examination of the employees in the unit is done everyday as a matter of routine and during such a test four days ago it was found that the tritium level was more than the normal level. They were taken to the plant hospital in Mallapur and were treated immediately, they said.

"The contents of the water in the cooler are being investigated," sources said.

Scientists carried out immediate checks for radioactivity at the plant site but no leakage was detected, sources said.

A probe was being carried out to find out how the water in the cooler was contaminated, the sources said.

KAPS-I has been shut down since October 20 for annual maintenance.

Kaiga has three atomic power units of 220 MW each. A fourth unit is almost ready for commissioning.

DoT Asks BSNL To Hurry 93M Line Tender

The Indian Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has suggested a quick re-tendering of the 93-million GSM line order, from BSNL. The equipment order has already been delayed for nearly a year. Currently, BSNL is already involved in price negotiations with Ericsson for the two zones and for the southern zone with Huawei. It has also given advance purchase orders to both. Black Friday results show cautious shopping toward Cyber Monday

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Black Friday’s shopping spree sent consumers home with cart-loads of bargains — everything from flat-screen TVs to diamond-studded earrings to Zhu Zhu pets. (The battery-operated toy hamster is particularly popular).

While some Americans may have been observing the anti-consumerist event known as “Buy Nothing Day” — it’s hard to track that trend among people who stay home with families or go for a nice, vigorous postprandial hike rather than exercise their credit cards — initial indications are that all the pre-Thanksgiving hype and hoopla paid off for retailers this year.

“There were bargain-hungry shoppers out there, and retailers really did pull out all the stops for people,” National Retail Federation spokesperson Kathy Grannis told Time.

For one thing, big-box stores are opening earlier and earlier — in some cases, midnight rather than the traditional 6 a.m. Walmart stores were open on Thanksgiving, and some of the big chains were advertising online specials before that on limited numbers of attractive items as a way of enticing early shoppers.

Initial indications show the numbers up over last year, at least somewhat. The economy is a factor. Some of the shock from last year’s financial crisis may have worn off a bit. Also, with high unemployment and underemployment a persistent problem, people are especially eager to look for discounted prices on those things they think they need and can afford.

More than 5,000 people were at Macy’s Herald Square store in New York early Friday, slightly more than last year, the Associated Press reports. “Among the most popular items were Tommy Hilfiger $99 bomber jackets, marked down from $450,” according to the AP.

Still, many consumers — though they joined the predawn lines looking for good deals on netbook computers and GPS devices — are very aware of an economy that can feel personally precarious.

“I’m not stupid enough to think I couldn’t lose my job tomorrow,” Barbara Martin told the Washington Post as she waited outside a Best Buy store in Rockville, Md. “We’re going to cut back on spending this year for the holidays by about 75 percent.”

Retailers are observing this trend in the psychology of shopping too.

“The customer this year is very researched and very methodical,” James Fielding, president of Walt Disney Co.’s Disney Stores, told the Wall Street Journal. “I don’t think there’s a lot of impulse shopping going on. People are just being realistic about their personal situation and the economy.”

Meanwhile, the Internet has changed the way Americans shop too — especially since “Cyber Monday” first was declared in 2005.

“Between 2005 and 2008, Cyber Monday sales increased 74 percent, beating the 60 percent revenue increase for other days that have been online sales record-holders for the holiday season,” Mark Guarino reported in the Monitor. “As Internet retailers boost special promotions, free shipping, and outreach on Cyber Monday, the gap could close further in coming years.”

Analysts also report increased weekend activity on PayPal and eBay.

Between now and the end of the year, the National Retail Federation expects that holiday sales will have dropped for the second year in a row — about one percent compared to last year, although not as much as the 3.4 percent slide in 2008.

Rachel Uchitel Pics: The Face of Tiger Woods' Mistress?

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Is There Any Truth to the Rumor that Tiger Woods Has Been Having an Affair with 'party Girl' Rachel Uchitel?
The Web is on fire this morning with rumors that golf legend Tiger Woods has been having an affair. Woods' alleged mistress is Rachel Uchitel and, as can be expected, the search phrase "Rachel Uchitel pictures" has rocketed to the top of

Google Trends. Whenever a married high-profile person is rumored to be having an affair, you can get your bottom dollar that the alleged object of their forbidden affections is going to be the hottest ticket on Google for at least a day. Hence, Rachel Uchitel is a rather popular girl this morning and her pictures are very much in demand.

So, who is Rachel Uchitel and why is she rumored to be having an affair with Tiger Woods? According to SportsbyBrooks, Rachel Uchitel is a 34-year-old "party girl" from New York City. In addition, Rachel Uchitel reportedly had an affair with actor David Boreanaz, who stars in the Fox TV series "Bones."

SportsbyBrooks reports that, according to the National Enquirer, Rachel Uchitel was in Melbourne, Australia while Tiger Woods was playing in the Australian Masters and one of her acquaintances, Ashley Samson, has confirmed that Rachel Uchitel and Tiger Woods are having a relationship.

At this point, it is important to remember that Tiger Woods is rumored to be having an affair with New York party girl Rachel Uchitel. Time will tell if there is any truth to the rumor.

If the alleged affair between Rachel Uchitel and Tiger Woods does turn out to be true, however, it will certainly tarnish Tiger Woods' sterling reputation. Tiger Woods, 33, is an American icon whose accomplishments in the staid sport of golf are staggering.

It would also be hard to understand why Tiger Woods would want to cheat on his beautiful wife - Swedish model Elin Nordegren, with whom he has two young children. Of course, the same thing can be said of former CNN sports analyst Steve Phillips, whose extramarital affair with Brooke Hundley has been confirmed. Many are baffled that Steve Phillips would see fit to betray his beautiful wife Marni Phillips by rolling in the hay with Brooke Hundley, an emotionally unstable young woman.

National Enquirer Tiger Woods!

Posted by DAREDEVIL

PHOTOS! The National Enquirer’s allegations of a Tiger Woods Rachel Uchitel affair is unlike any alleged mistress story this year. The National Enquirer followed Tiger Woods and Rachel Uchitel to even Australia to document their alleged affair.

Yet the Tiger Woods Rachel Uchitel story is dramatically different than other major sports bombshells of 2009. Rick Pitino admitted to his encounter with Karen Sypher. Steve Phillips detailed his Brooke Hundley encounters in police reports. But with the Tiger Woods National Enquirer story, Rachel Uchitel was within 48 hours calling the report completely false.

Really?

And unlike the Phillips Hundley affair - that evolved from police report to facebook profiles - Tiger Woods’ story remained unknown until the National Enquirer released previews of its upcoming December 7 article this week along with the Star Magazine’s own report.

What are the allegations and the response?

First the National Enquirer’s Dec. 7 issue claims Tiger Woods and Rachel Uchitel may have had a 2009 affair driven by alleged meetings in New York, Las Vegas and Australia. Australia? That is the location of Woods’ recent Australian Masters.

The magazine writes:

“When confronted, Rachel insisted she was in Melbourne on business and denied carrying on an affair with Woods. Rachel also claimed that she’d traveled toAustralia with a boyfriend. In a later conversation however, she admitted to THE ENQUIRER she had lied about going to Australia with a boyfriend.” The Enquirer stated an unnamed source for Woods “vehemently denied an affair” adding “the golfer may have been at the same nightclub as Rachel at some point.“

And what is Uchitel’s response?

Rachel Uchitel late Friday responded to the Enquirer’s claims calling them false.

“I don’t appreciate my name or what people think of me being dragged through the mud by people who don’t even bother to research what or who they’re talking about … they should research who these stories are coming from, who they’re believing as a credible source. Not to mention that it’s in theNational Enquirer.”

Yet, online reaction Friday notes the Enquirer’s success with the John Edwards affair story.

“I totally deny the Enquirer story. They did contact me about it, but they didn’t use any of my quotes or any of the information I gave them. They make it sound like I said those things, but it’s all other people saying I said things.”

Second, what does the Star Magazine claim?

The Star claimed Uchitel met Woods when she worked as an event planner and the director of VIP Operations for the Big Apple hotspot Griffin. The source ofthe Star’s allegations reportedly was Rachel’s “friend” Ashley Sampson. Sampson reportedly tells the publication:

“In June, she told me, ‘Tiger Woods is blowing up my phone messages!’ Tiger thinks Rachel is staying quiet about their affair, but she told everyone. She told me, ‘I’m having an affair withTiger Woods . We’re in love!’ … I’ve heard him while she was talking to him on the phone and I recognized the voice. I said, ‘Rachel, he’s married,’ and she said Big (bleeping) deal! It’sTiger Woods. I don’t care about his wife! we’re in love!’ “

“He’d ask Rachel things like, ‘What are you wearing? What do you want to do to me? What do you want me to do to you?’ She even read me text messages that Tiger sent her that said, ‘I miss you so much! I love you’.”

A separate source claimed to tell the magazine: “I know for a fact that Tiger and Rachel got together for four days in Los Angeles. She talks about their affair all the time. She thinks Tiger is going to leave his wife and marry her.”

Elin Nordegren Woods Pictures

What is Uchitel’s response to the Star?

“On Ashley Samson, the “close friend” of Uchitel’s who provided all the information to the Enquirer, along with another unnamed source, both of whom supposedly “passed” a polygraph: “I’ve met her twice in my life. We’re not friends. I’m just speculating but it seems like someone else is telling her what to say or manipulating her. After all, she got $25,000 for this.” “

The website Blackbookmag.com had a quote from Uchitel previously:

“Although I’ve been romantically linked to a famous baseball player, a Broadway star, a musician, and various film and television actors, I will never kiss and tell!“

Stores race to be the first to open on Black Friday

Posted by DAREDEVIL

It's the retail equivalent of a nuclear arms race: Macy's is starting its post-Thanksgiving sale at 5 a.m. Friday, so J.C. Penney and Kohl's plan to unlock their doors at 4.

Officials at the Great Mall in Milpitas believe they can top that by offering special discounts at stores that will open at midnight tonight. But why wait until then? While some businesses will be closed for the holiday, executives at Kmart, Old Navy and the Sports Authority chain are convinced customers would rather skip washing up the dishes today and visit their stores instead.

After years of hyping day-after-Thanksgiving discounts and seeing shoppers turn out in droves as a result, big retailers now are vying to outdo one another by racing to open earlier than the guys down the street. Experts say the trend probably doesn't increase overall sales, but many retailers view it as a necessary part of competition, especially in a difficult economy.

"The original motivating factor was momentum: If I can get you to shop in my store before you go somewhere else, then I've got a better chance of getting your dollars," said Marshal Cohen, chief retail analyst for the NPD research firm. "And we all know there's a limited share of dollars this year."

Opening early is also a publicity gimmick, according to retail marketing expert Eugene Muscat, who called it a "strategic move" by brick-and-mortar store executives who have seen the shopping public — and news media

— turn their attention from reports on "Black Friday" promotions to features about shopping online.

"Everybody is saying, 'Look at me.' This is exactly what marketing people get paid to do," said Muscat, a business professor at the University of San Francisco.

Still, does anyone really want to shop in the middle of the night? Not retiree Regina Andrews, who was resting on a bench after shopping at the Great Mall on Tuesday afternoon. "You can't even enjoy your Thanksgiving if you're thinking about going out shopping at midnight," she insisted.

Evidently some people can. Great Mall spokeswoman Cristina Robles said visitors filled the mall's 6,800 parking spaces at 12:30 a.m. on the day after Thanksgiving last year.

"It's a social event. People come with their friends in groups. We had all ages, people with strollers and babies," said Robles, who added that the crowds had dwindled by 3 a.m.

Post-Thanksgiving shopping took a tragic turn at one Walmart in New York last year, when frenzied shoppers knocked over a security guard and unwittingly trampled him to death. The retailing giant said it has taken steps to prevent a recurrence. Walmart says most of its stores will be open all night tonight, so there won't be unruly crowds waiting outside, although special sale prices don't take effect until 5 a.m. Friday.

The Disney Store chain is also opening more than 125 outlets at midnight, including one at Westfield Valley Fair in San Jose, in part to minimize the prospect of too many customers crowding store aisles all at once. Other Disney stores will open at 4 a.m., and a few — although none in the Bay Area — will open at 9 p.m. tonight.

"By opening early, we actually spread our traffic through the day, and we think that creates a better shopping experience for our guests," said Disney Store President Jim Fielding.

The term "Black Friday" started with reports that day-after-Thanksgiving sales helped change retailers' accounting from red ink to profitable black. Fielding, however, said the term "Black Friday" sounds too somber. "We're trying to call it Magical Friday. We think it's the most exciting day in retail and we want our guests to have fun."

Like other retailers, Fielding would not disclose sales figures from last year, when the chain opened stores at midnight for the first time. But, he added, "I think we can say that if it hadn't been profitable, we wouldn't have repeated it."

Business experts say early openings and huge discounts tend to be the province of big chains and malls, since small independent stores don't draw enough traffic to make up for the cost of such promotions. Kathy Grannis of the National Retail Federation said the little guys tend to focus on customer service and repeat business instead.

A survey sponsored by Grannis' organization found one in 10 Americans who plan to shop Friday said they would hit stores at midnight tonight. Three out of 10 said they would start hunting for bargains at 4 a.m.

"I'm about to do it. You've got to try to be one of the first people at the stores on Friday, or there won't be anything left," said Vince Reza, a San Jose City College student who was strolling the Great Mall with a friend Tuesday.

Last year, Reza said, he awoke before dawn and headed for Walmart with his mother, father and other relatives in tow. "You know it's going to be packed," he added, "so you want to beat the crowd."

‘Screaming Hot’ TVs Abound as Walmart, Kohl’s Push for Shoppers

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Nov. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Kohl’s Corp. and Toys ‘R’ Us Inc. are competing for customers with discounts and extended Black Friday hours as cost-conscious shoppers say they plan to spend less on gifts than they did last year.

Kohl’s, the fourth-largest U.S. department-store chain, will open at 4 a.m. on Nov. 27 and offer more than 300 early- bird specials, including $34.99 cashmere sweaters. Toys ‘R’ Us is offering almost 50 percent more of such deals than last year. Walmart is staying open all of tonight so shoppers can grab $3 pajamas and $15 Miley Cyrus jeans when they go on sale at 5 a.m.

Chains are also contending for home-electronics shoppers. Walmart’s Web site is offering home delivery of flat-panel televisions and other electronics for 97 cents. Best Buy Co., the world’s largest electronics chain, is discounting flat-panel TVs, cameras and laptops.

“We have been more aggressive than ever before in our marketing and in our pricing,” Toys ‘R’ Us Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jerry Storch said in a telephone interview yesterday.

The Wayne, New Jersey-based chain is opening at midnight tonight, five hours earlier than last year, offering 220 doorbusters compared with 150 in 2008, and has distributed a 28- page national Black Friday circular. It promised to have thousands of the Zhu Zhu Pets robot hamsters that sold out in recent months, and will be handing out 64-crayon Crayola boxes as gifts with purchases.

In the Black

The day after U.S. Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday, the traditional beginning of holiday buying. Explanations of the phrase’s origins differ, one holding that it’s the weekend when retailers go to being in the black, profitable for the year.

As many as 134 million people plan to shop over the weekend, 4.7 percent more than last year, according to the National Retail Federation, a Washington-based trade group. Yet, spending may fall during the holidays. Shoppers may spend an average of $682.74 on Christmas gifts this year, compared with $705.01 last year, according to a survey by the federation.

With unemployment at 10.2 percent, price is more important to shoppers this year than selection, quality or convenience, according to the NRF.

Walmart cut some toy prices to $5, and Richfield, Minnesota-based Best Buy is promoting $299.99 32-inch Dynex flat-screen TVs. J.C. Penney Co. is offering 15 percent more specials, including half-carat diamond stud earrings for $79.99. Kohl’s offered $89.99 Nextar global positioning system units, down from $199.99.

‘Tough Season’

“We approached this holiday knowing it was going to be a tough season,” said Julie Gardner, chief marketing officer of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-based Kohl’s. “Consumers are continuing to be very smart in their shopping and look for ways to make their dollar go further.”

More than a quarter of U.S. households plan to shop Friday, according to an International Council of Shopping Centers survey. Almost 18 percent of those surveyed said they would shop between midnight and 4 a.m.; 36 percent said they would go between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. The council is a New York-based trade group.

“Retailers want people shopping whenever, however and why- ever -- just come on in now,” Wendy Liebmann, chief executive officer of the New York consulting firm WSL Strategic Retail, said in a telephone interview this week. “They need to get people excited at a moment when they don’t want to overspend.”

Doors Open

Walmart, the world’s biggest retailer, will leave the doors open tonight at many of its 833 U.S. discount stores to keep crowds from congregating outside. Among the stores staying open is the one in Valley Stream, New York, where Jdimytai Damour, a temporary worker, was fatally trampled on Black Friday last year.

The Bentonville, Arkansas-based chain announced holiday discounts on toys, turkeys and TVs as early as September. Those promotions won’t diminish the importance of Black Friday because it “signals the beginning of the Christmas season,” Charles Holley, Walmart’s executive vice president of finance, said this month. The company declined to comment further.

Walmart rose 11 cents to $54.96 in New York Stock Exchange composite trading yesterday. Target climbed 37 cents to $47.83. Kohl’s gained $1.73 to $55.54. Best Buy increased 41 cents to $43.26, and J.C. Penney added $1.41 to $30.64.

Minneapolis-based Target, the second-largest U.S. discount chain, will open Friday at 5 a.m., an hour earlier than last year.

Blocks, Flat Panels

It cut the price of an Apex 40-inch flat-panel TV to $449 from $599.99 among doorbusters that go on sale at 5 a.m. Building blocks, a radio-controlled Hummer toy vehicle and a baby doll in a stroller are among toys marked half off.

J.C. Penney, based in Plano, Texas, will open at 4 a.m. It’s airing a TV commercial featuring tailgaters eating leftovers on Black Friday while waiting to shop, and will offer wake-up calls to shoppers.

As a run-up to Black Friday, Best Buy is airing three national TV commercials featuring $197 laptops and $79.99 smart phones. The retailer completed filming Nov. 20, allowing it “to have some screaming hot things for Friday,” Barry Judge, chief marketing officer, said by telephone yesterday.

“There are many more last-minute tactics you can spring on the consumer that enables you to hang back and get some attention,” Judge said.

Even computer giant Apple are having sale prices especially on their laptops, so if this year your looking for technology, this is your year!

But remember with many stores this is the only time of year that they offer such prices. So make sure to get in early.

A lot of stores sale prices have been leaked on the Internet , creating a hype among shoppers.

But if lining at the store isn’t your cup of tea, maybe you will consider shopping online. It saves time, money waiting times and the madness of in-store activity.

But research is important , either if you choose online or in-store to shop.

The store’s websites such as Best Buys are offering some great prices on TVs, DVDs and blu ray discs. You also have Target, Kohl’s, Kmart, Home Depot, Walmart and Toys R US who are offering online bargains for eager shoppers.

One of the best stores for purchases this year would have to be Walmart who are offering bargains on just about everything, but be careful if your going in-store, last year Walmart saw a Black Friday related death, when an employee was trampled by shoppers eager for a bargain. Maybe more reason to shop online.

Purple Google - Search With Colors

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Everyone's searching for "Purple Google" this morning and I decided to do a little digging to find out what it meant. Turns out that some smarties out there have figured out how to create the Google homepage in various bright colors. And guess what? It's all fine by Google!

Since Google allows their search engine to be embedded into users' personal blogs and sites it was only a matter of time before Purple Google came along. Actually, to be correct it's Google Purple and the maker has several other colors you can choose from to make your Google homepage. You can find them all here. Me personally? I'll stick to the regular Google homepage. I love seeing all the different themes they have. But if color's your fancy then check Google Purple out!

Here are some FAQ's about Google Purple:

Q: Does Google Purple really use a Google Search?
A: Yes! Google allows web designers to embed a real Google Search box in their websites through Google's Adsense program, and this is exactly what Google Purple uses.

Q: Is Google Purple run by Google itself?
A: No. I created Google Purple myself rather than making unreasonable demands of the very busy Google company. (i.e. "Dear Google, please make an purple version of your search engine just for me, thank you.")

Q: If I make Google Purple my home page, will I log on someday and find advertisements all over the page?
A: No way. The simplicity of Google is something I greatly admire, so Google Purple will remain as serene as the search engine to which it is a tribute.

Q: Aren't you worried Google will sue you or something?
A: Google's motto is "Don't Be Evil," and I'd like to think they'd understand that this website is an expression of my admiration for their company. Since Google purple and its sister sites all use a Google Search, I feel that they both encourage people to continue to use Google, and show that Google has creative fans who admire their work.

Apple has teamed up with a well-known concert promoter Live Nation to provide exclusive recordings of live performances via the iTunes Store. The newly setup iTunes page dubbed “Live Nation Presents” says the following about the initiative:

In the past few years, Live Nation has put some of the best concerts and tours around, producing over 22,000 live events annually while working with some of the top artists in the world and managing some of the best known venues. Now you can get amazing concert recordings from Live Nation venues and tours on iTunes. Below you’ll find live sets from an eclectic array of artists captured from their live shows around the world. For more information on all Live Nation venues and shows, go to livenation.com

The “Live Nation Presents” iTunes page featured several exclusive performances at press time, including recordings from OK Go, Ziggy Marley, Hillary Duff, Plain White T’s, and Duffy. The Live Nation Studios division is responsible for recording artists’ live performances, shooting tours, and capturing other exclusive content.

Christian’s Opinion

There’s no doubt that music fans will appreciate this latest addition that takes the music section of the iTunes Store well beyond individual songs and albums. Earlier this summer Apple debuted iTunes D45, a digital version of the two-song 45rpm vinyl record. Early September Apple unveiled a new digital album format dubbed iTunes LP as part of the iTunes 9 upgrade. The company has also enabled the Live Music section that carries live albums and even concert films. The varied music content and the sheer size of its 11 million strong song catalogue have helped iTunes become the #1 music reseller in the US.

Apple’s online-only store now sells more music than Walmart’s combined physical and digital music sales. The NPD Group estimated iTunes’ share of the U.S. music market this summer at a whopping 25 percent versus Walmart’s 14 percent share. NPD estimated digital music downloads at 35 percent of total sales, with iTunes commanding 69 percent of the download market.

Dancing in the street: Mary Jane's in New York for Thanksgiving parade

Posted by DAREDEVIL

At this very moment, 26 dancers from Mary Jane's School of Dance are exploring the streets of New York City, awaiting their 15 minutes of fame as part of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

This week, the 14- to 19-year-old dancers are joining hundreds from across the nation as they perform in the 83rd edition of the famous holiday parade, set for 9 a.m. Thursday. The parade will air live on NBC.

For seven days and six nights, the girls and 26 spectators from the area will do more than just get ready for the parade, although evening rehearsals will prepare the dancers for their nationally televised appearance. They will explore some of the city's most famous sites -- including the Empire State Building and Times Square -- and enjoy some classic New York experiences, like ice skating in Rockefeller Center, taking in a Broadway show, seeing the Radio City Rockettes perform live and shopping on Fifth Avenue. They will even get to attend dance classes with famous choreographers and dancers.

"I'm just so happy for the girls, that they get an opportunity to do this, because it really is a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Not everybody gets the chance to dance in the Macy's Day Parade," said Mary Bray Mehrzad, who co-owns Mary Jane's School of Dance with her mother, Mary Jane Maxwell.

"The actual parade is amazing. It's just pure excitement. It's not like any other parade that I've been to," she said.

Mary Jane's dancers have experienced all of this before. The school was first invited by Mike Miller & Associates Special Events to take part in the parade in 2005, and Mehrzad said plans are to take dancers every four years, as long as the school is invited to participate.

According to the MMA Web site, performers are selected by invitation and qualification through summer cheer and dance camps and award-winning teams.

"They're the chaperones, and they're the choreographers," Mehrzad said of MMA. She said MMA sends each participant a DVD, and "it's all up to them to learn the choreography before they go up there."

"You can tell that they've grown and they've taken leadership," she said, watching the girls rehearse together prior to the trip. "It's good just to see them work together, on their own."

Emily Shirer, who spent her 16th birthday yesterday traveling to New York, attended the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade four years ago as a spectator. Her older sisters, Rebecca and Susan Shirer, were performers and have returned this year as spectators.

"It was freezing cold, and it was raining ... but it was definitely worth it to see them. It was a lot of fun," the Orangeburg Preparatory School sophomore said.

Fifteen-year-old Laura Andrews also returned to New York for her chance in the spotlight.

"It's a really good experience for everyone, and I think it builds you as a person, going and having your own responsibilities," she said, adding that she's more excited than nervous at the prospect of being on TV.

"It's a really fun time. I love New York. If I could live there, I would," the OPS sophomore said.

Weslie Ann Clark, 17, a senior at Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School, was at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2005 to see her sister, Sallie Clark, perform.

She said what stood out most in her mind was "visiting the Empire State Building, getting up at 5 o'clock in the morning to go line up on the streets of New York when it was freezing and raining, and sitting there for hours, waiting on the parade to come by."

Not only do the girls get to dance in the parade, Mehrzad said. They also have the opportunity to see preparations being made for the main event.

"They get to actually go and watch the balloons get blown up," she said. "They get to go in there and see the whole process."

Before taking off, 14-year-old Sarah Catherine Williams, a freshman at B-E, said, "I'm kind of nervous because I've never flown, and I'm just anxious about going and seeing what it's like. I've never been anywhere big, so I'm kind of anxious to see what all of the buildings are like."

She said it's kind of scary, knowing she might be on TV.

"Everybody knows about it, so it's like, 'We'll be watching for you,'" she said.

While Williams left town looking forward to shopping in New York, 16-year-old Casey McCurry said she just wants to take in the whole experience.

"I want to see the Broadway shows, and we get to wear our red jackets, and they say everyone will ask for your picture and stuff, so it's kind of cool," the OPS junior said. "I want to see how good all of the other dancers are because I'm thinking they're going to be really, really good."

She said the possibility of being on TV is nerve-racking.

"It's probably going to catch everybody doing something embarrassing, and it would be me that happened to," she said.

Mehrzad said the trip is optional, and dancers are responsible for coming up with their own money to fund it. Some of the girls held fund-raisers, including a nail-spa salon day sponsored by several of the younger spectators. The only requirement for the dancers is that they are between the ages of 14 and 19.

"We just have a great group of girls, and they are excited to come to dance every Monday and every Tuesday. This has just added excitement," Mehrzad said. "They come in here and they work hard, and they're just always a pleasure to teach. This has just taken everything to the next level.

"I just know that they're ready."

Jon and Kate plus 8 say goodbye in series finale

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Jon and Kate plus 8 ended a three year run last night in the series finale. The show is over, unless perhaps Jon and Kate come to some kind of understanding about any possibility of reality TV shows in the future.

The Jon and Kate marriage is also over, and couldn’t survive the reality TV show itself. Their public divorce sent fans into a two way split deciding who they would side with. Jon began to see other women, and Kate stayed home with the kids. Their daily arguments made national news headlines over the past year.

In the season finale, Jon and Kate Gosselin were interviewed separately and spoke about their lives, the past and the present, and what they think might happen in the future.
Kate called the ending of the show "bittersweet," but also added that it could have been "totally avoidable."

Kate, 34 also spoke about Jon’s affairs with women. "[The kids] don't know about the girlfriends at all," Kate said. "That's just too warped for them, too unhealthy for them to know. They're learning at this age by watching us what it's like to be an adult, but that's the last thing I want them to know."

Kate was on the verge of tears several times during the interview when she spoke about the failed marriage. "I never had a clear picture of how it would end. It's too soon," Kate said.

Jon, 32 it seems has moved on emotionally and is ready to get on with the rest of his life. He seems to have adjusted a little quicker than Kate has to what has happened.

"It's unfortunate that our marriage failed, but our family shouldn't fail. We're gonna have to strive to be the best parents we can whether we're married or not," Jon said. "We're definitely not gonna be married again."

Because he married so young (at 22), he said that recognized that he possibly was “reverting to 23”.
"I'm moving forward, I know what I have to do. To become friends with Kate. To continue my relationship with Hailey [Glassman]," Jon said.

Alicia Sacramone Trades Up To Date Brady Quinn

Posted by DAREDEVIL

Brady Quinn, who has been in the news of late for a purported "cheap shot" to a Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman, is back in the news. This time, its for his personal life, as he's dating Alicia Sacramone.

It's a banner week for Cleveland QB Brady Quinn with this news. Earlier this week, he had the first 300-yard game of his career and the first 4-TD passing game of his career. Alicia Sacramone is a world-class gymnest, by the way.

Alicia Sacramone revealed the news in an interview she conducted with USA Gymnastics. There, she said she's now both a football and Browns fan after dating Brady Quinn.

Alicia Sacramone is 21, which is a little on the old side for a gymnast. She's currently involved in a comeback, despite that. At the 2008 Olympic games, she was a member of the team which won a silver team medal, and just missed winning an individual medal by placing fourth place in the vault event.

In terms of world championship placings, Alicia Sacramone has won seven career world medals, including two gold, three silver and two bronze. At the 2007 World Championships, she helped the U.S. women win only their second world team title in history.

Vault was a specialty for Alicia Sacramone. In fact, she won four consecutive U.S. vault titles from 2005-08. She also took first in 2005-06 in U.S. floor exercise. Additionally, she was named USA Gymnastics' Sportswoman of the Year three consecutive years (2005-07).

Alicia Sacramone retired after the 2008 Olympic Games. She has announced her comeback to the sport and is targeting the 2010 Visa Championships.

Interestingly, previously Alicia Sacramone dated a football player from Brown University. It seems, with an NFL QB on her arm, she has traded up.

Posted by DAREDEVIL

The stunning news that an infamous Paul Delaroche painting, thought to be destroyed during World War II, has resurfaced is circulating quickly in Europe and elsewhere as it is prepared to be put on display.

Many believed that Delaroche's artwork "Charles I Insulted by Cromwell's Soldiers" was lost forever after a German bombing raid in 1941. The Independent reports it was rediscovered on June 7, and it will be unveiled on Feb. 24, 2010 at the National Gallery in London.

The news has generated substantial attention in the blogosphere and elsewhere. It's noted that the painting was "hidden away for decades" in Scotland and the 1836 artwork has only recently reappeared.

The painting is for many reasons historic. Besides its old age and link to World War II, the artwork itself depicts King Charles I of Britain shortly before his execution in 1649.

Best Black Friday deals on gadgets: laptops, cameras, HDTVs, Blu-Ray players

Deals for gadgets on Black Friday

Looking for the best deals on gadgets on Black Friday? I’ve found dealnews.com to have arguably the most thorough roundup of the absolute best deals to be had on Black Friday. The Fox News Tech Tuesday roundup is informative, as well. Here’s a look at what it has posted:

Cheap laptops: Wal-Mart is coming out with a laptop that’s incredibly affordable, at just $198. “A sub-200 dollar price … puts it in the consideration set for a lot of people,” says AOL consumer adviser Regina Willis.

My note: Remember that the best laptop prices usually come in April and September, and you could very well find prices to beat those currently being advertised. Still, the laptop sales are worth taking a look at this weekend. Also, Staples has confirmed the $300 price on the HP Intel Celeron 16-inch laptop.

Cheap Apple gear: The iPod-manufacturing technology giant has already sent Black Friday teasers to customers, advertising a “special Apple one-day shopping event” scheduled for Nov. 27th. The circular doesn’t list specific deals, but Apple hints at better than ordinary prices. If you’ve been hankering for a new MacBook, the prices may not get any better.

My note: Last year’s discounts were in the 5 percent to 10 percent range, so don’t expect to see dramatically reduced prices. Still, any savings is good. Here’s a look at Apple’s 2008 sales: 13-inch MacBooks, $101 off; 20-inch iMac, $51 off; 8 GB iPod Nano, $11 off; 8 GB iPod Touch, $21 off; iPod Classic, $21 off.

Cheap digital cameras: Best Buy is advertising a 10-megapixel digital camera for the almost embarrassingly low price of just $49.95, and other stores such as Office Depot are matching that price with different models. Digital cameras will almost certainly be a huge seller on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Cheap Blu-Ray players: The price of high-definition Blu-Ray movie players has been dropping steadily since the products first debuted in June of 2006. Watch for sub-$100 players at Best Buy and other retailers. Wal-Mart is even advertising a $78 model, which is certain to sell out promptly.

Cheap HDTVs: The cost of high-definition televisions seems to plunge by the day, but which deals are worth your money? Keep an eye on Wal-Mart for a 40-inch Sony Bravia, which will be on sale for $598. And rival Target reportedly will sell a 32-inch Westinghouse set for just $246.

My note: As you’re shopping the national retailers, keep an eye on the deals offered by local stores like BrandsMart , hhgregg and Fry’s. I’ve not found any leaked ads by the three, but if history is any indication, there are certain be outstanding deals at the three.

Wal-Mart vs. Amazon…and the winner is, YOU!

These two retailers are duking it out in a price war comparable to prize fighters in a ring. Wal-Mart is the behemoth, a heavy weight in the bargain shopping arena. However, Amazon is on the fast-track and closing, according to this report by the New York Times.

Here’s an excerpt:

The tussle began last month as a relatively trivial but highly public back-and-forth over which company had the lowest prices on the most anticipated new books and DVDs this fall. By last week, it had spread to select video game consoles, mobile phones, even to the humble Easy-Bake Oven, a 45-year-old toy from Hasbro that usually heats up small cakes, not tensions between billion-dollar corporations.

Last Wednesday, Wal-Mart dropped the price of the oven to $17, from $28, as part of its “Black Friday” deals. Later the same day, Amazon cut its price, which had also been $28, to $18.

“It’s not about the prices of books and movies anymore. There is a bigger battle being fought,” said Fiona Dias, executive vice president at GSI Commerce, which manages the Web sites of large retailers. “The price-sniping by Wal-Mart is part of a greater strategic plan. They are just not going to cede their business to Amazon.”
