During an announcement event at the Oregon Lottery® office in Salem, Oregon Lottery Director Dale Penn announced the winning number for the game’s $1 million top prize.

The winning number for the one $1 million prize, selected from the 250,000 available Thanksgiving Raffle tickets, was 041283.

The Lottery began selling the 250,000 Thanksgiving Raffle tickets at 5 AM on October 4, 2009. By October 14, all 250,000 of the tickets had been purchased.

In addition to the $1 million top prize, the $10 Thanksgiving Raffle ticket offered players the chance to also win 10 prizes of $20,000 and 1,000 prizes of $100.

A complete list of all 1,011 winning Raffle numbers can be found on the Lottery’s Web site at www.oregonlottery.org. Players can also check their Raffle tickets at any Oregon Lottery retail location.

Director Penn also announced the Lottery’s next Raffle game, a second St. Patrick’s Day Raffle. “It is clear to us that Oregonians enjoy the Lottery’s Raffle games,” said Director Penn. “Tickets for our second St. Patrick’s Day Raffle will go on sale on January 24, 2010.” The new St. Patrick’s Day Raffle will have the same number of tickets - 250,000 - and prizes the previous Raffles have offered.

Book About Mattie Stepanek's Life to Be Released Tomorrow

Posted by Milaan Parmar

A book about the amazing life of Mattie Stepanek, the famous young poet and humanitarian born with a rare disorder known as Dysautonomic Mitcochondrial Myopathy, will be released on November 3, 2009. The book, titled Messenger: The Legacy of Mattie J.T. Stepanek and Heartsongs, was penned by Mattie Stepanek's mother Jeni, and will give readers a glimpse into the boy's struggles and achievements from the time he was born.

Jeni Stepanek appeared on Good Morning America this morning to explain her reasons for writing the book and keeping Mattie's legacy alive. On GMA, Stepanek's mother said about Mattie, "His legacy is getting bigger every year. It was time to share the true story of his life."

Mattie Stepanek, who was dubbed a "peacemaker" died in 2004 at the age of 13. He lost three siblings to the disease that eventually killed him (his mother was not diagnosed with the disease until adulthood) and their deaths inspired him to start writing poetry when he was only three years old. Stepanek was a fan favorite on The Oprah Winfrey Show. The boy made several appearances on Winfrey's show and the two became close friends. Mattie wrote several inspirational books in his short lifetime, including Heartsongs, Hope Through Heartsongs, Celebrate Through Heartsongs , Just Peace and Reflections of a Peacemaker. His books offered inspirational messages for people of all ages. All of Stepanek's books were New York Times bestsellers.

Messenger: The Legacy of Mattie J.T. Stepanek and Heartsongs will include the life story of Mattie as well as some previously unpublished works by the young poet, and will also include some messages from some of his celebrity friends (Winfrey, Maya Angelou and President Jimmy Carter were just a few of the boy's friends).

According to Stepanek's official website, Jeni Stepanek will sign copies of her book at several locations in the Washington DC area, including the Borders store in North Bethesda, Maryland on November 4th.

Black Friday Deals 2009!

Posted by Milaan Parmar

As we approach the 2009 Black Friday Deals, consumer sites are warning about fake Black Friday Deals coupons online.

Last week, several 2009 Black Friday Ad Deals posted online were reported fake by Reuters. The result caused consumers into confusion and retailers’ legal departments into a hunt for the cause.

How do you protect yourself against fake Black Friday Ad Deals? First, hear the news directly from the source. Retailers post on their website teasers. They tell you even several days ahead of time hints on

a. products that will be discounted
b. percentage of discounting
c. how to effectuate the deal.

Apple is an excellent example. In 2009, days ahead of Black Friday, Apple gave you a teaser. It included the products subjected, a suggestion of the quantity of products in the deal, and even delivery information.

It read “Come back to the Apple Online Store this Friday for a special one day only Christmas shopping event. You’ll find dozens of great iPod, iPhone and Mac gift ideas, all with free delivery.”

It was all right on their website.

As you can see, three things worked:

1. The notice came directly from the retailer rather than some 3rd party website.

2. The notice in fact gave a suggestion of which products might get Black Friday discounting.

3. The information was on one website and only one website - Apple’s.

“It got an email sent to me”, “this is secret information” - those lines are typical of the fake deals being posted online.

How big are the discounts? LALATE in 2008 covered Amazon.com’s Sharp Aquos 42 inch tv LCD HDTV. It was offered on Black Friday for $999.98, compared to a list of $1500, an approximate 33% saving.

So for buyers always wait to get the information from the retailer and rely on information on their website. However, prepare ahead of time. Choose your products and know their normal full retail price ahead of time so that when Black Friday notices come you will be ready.

DREW SEELEY, EMMY AWARD® NOMINEE ANNIE POTTS AND MULTIPLE EMMY AWARD® WINNER KIM ZIMMER STAR IN "FRESHMAN FATHER," A HALLMARK CHANNEL ORIGINAL MOVIE WHICH HAS BEGUN PRODUCTION FOR AIR ON HALLMARK CHANNEL IN 2010

Drew Seeley ("Another Cinderella Story"), Emmy Award nominee Annie Potts ("Love and War," "Designing Women") and multiple Emmy Award-winner Kim Zimmer ("Guiding Light") are set to star in "Freshman Father," a poignant Hallmark Channel Original Movie based on a true story about a young man whose high school sweetheart becomes pregnant and accompanies him to Harvard. When she gives up and goes home, he has to juggle school and all the challenges of being the single parent of a newborn.

"Freshman Father" has begun production in Victoria, B.C., Canada, and will premiere on Hallmark Channel in 2010.

John Patton (Seeley), the small town high school prom king, star quarterback and class valedictorian is all set to start Harvard in the fall when his steady girlfriend, Kathy (Britt Irvin, "The Assistants"), tells him she is pregnant. The couple makes the difficult decision to marry, and Kathy agrees to follow John to school. Then, when the compromises and responsibilities of young parenthood wear on her, Kathy leaves her son, Adam, and John behind to return to her small town.

Struggling now with his classes, a new job and taking care of his son by himself, John wonders how he will do it all. His luck improves a bit when he finds an apartment and his new manager, Dorothy (Potts), becomes his surrogate mom. But then John realizes he's failed a calculus exam after an all-nighter taking care of Adam and he decides to throw in the towel and start packing for home. It's only when an unlikely mentor appears – the hard-nosed Dean Frost (Zimmer) – that John gets a second chance and the support he needs to continue his dream.
"Freshman Father" is being produced by Freshman Father Productions. Carla Singer ("Twitches") is the executive producer; Harvey Kahn is the producer. Michael Scott ("Mrs. Miracle") is directing from a script by Bill Wells ("Blackout").

Clay Matthews Packers Tonight!

Posted by Milaan Parmar

Rookie Clay Matthews delivered the Packers’ notable moment from Monday Night Football tonight. Clay Matthews nabbed the ball from Adrian Peterson to deliver a 42 yard touchdown in a play that will make Tuesday morning’s highlight clips.

The 23 year old Matthews from USC stands 250 lbs and 6′3” and has delivered 4 tackles for the season.

But the Packers could not overcome the push of Favre. For the season, Brett is now 61 for 94 in completions, 566 yards, and 5 TDs. So far, 2009 has Favre better than his career average, delivering 65% completions this season compared to a career average of 62%.

Final score 23-30 Vikings win.

Natalin Avci Does Photo Shoot with Ron Artest at "Sports Illustrated" Interview

Hint to "Sports Illustrated": "Couples Retreat" Girl Natalin Avci Should Be in Your Next Swimsuit Edition
If you have never heard of Natalin Avci, then you are not alone. Most people have never heard of her. But she appeared in a photo shoot at a Sports Illustrated interview with NBA star Ron Artest and has a part in the

movie "Couples Retreat," and now everyone wants to see what she looks like. Natalin Avci photos, pictures, and images are in high demand, and with her

According to her profile on Model Mayhem, Natalin Avci is 23 and of Turkish descent. She is fluent in Spanish, English, and Turkish. She says she has "only been pursuing modeling and acting for a few months but so far I have had great success!"

Looking at her credits, the model is definitely hot and in demand. She has appeared in at least four music videos, including Jaime Foxx feat. Kanye West, Drake, The Dream's "Digital Girl" and Eminem feat. Dr. Dre, 50 Cent's "Crack a Bottle."

Natalin Avci has appeared in four movies, including the new Vince Vaughn movie, "Couples Retreat." She has also made television appearances on "Greek" and "Entourage."

Her photos adorn several magazines, including Lowrider, Maxim Phillipenes, Black Men, and Show magazine.

It certainly looks as if things are picking up for Natalin Avci. Landing a part in Vince Vaughn's "Couples Retreat," which is slated for release on October 9, and getting hired by Los Angeles Lakers new acquisition Ron Artest to do a picture layout certainly hasn't hurt her. She dominated the Googleverse on Monday, October 5.

When asked why he hired Natalin Avci, a person he had just met in a hotel lobby, for a photoshoot when Sports Illustrated was simply going to do an interview, he said, "The only purpose is to have fun." So now she can add "fun" pictures with Ron Artest to her credits.

But there is one thing the beautiful model will not do: pose nude. So if you are one of those guys who sees a beautiful woman in a bikini and starts an immediate internet search for said model's naked pictures, don't bother. She plainly states on her profile page at Model Mayhem: "Sorry but I am not interested in any nude, semi-nude, partially nude or fetish modeling."

On that Demi Moore bush pic

Posted by Milaan Parmar

Every couple of months the search engines go wild again looking for that Demi Moore Bush pic. It usually coincides with either Demi Moore or her husband, Ashton Kuchner, doing something or other. A couple of months back it was the result of a Comedy Central show, Tosh.0.

The presenter was (at least the presenter claimed to be) upset that Ashton Kuchner had so many Twitter followers and so suggested that people search for the Demi Moore Bush pic so that they would "unfollow" Kuchner.

Quite why such a picture should make people do so is an interesting little piece of social history. The picture itself comes from a shoot that Demi Moore did as a young starlet in Hollywood. It's not unusual for those who wish to break into the movies to have professional pics taken of themselves (well, at least for the women) wearing less than the normal amount of clothing. The pictures themselves vary between what we might call softcore and cheesecake: no underwear, a blue dress that varies in its positioning.

In Moore's photo set there are pictures that show a breast, and in another her dress rises up so that one is presented with rather more of Ms. Moore than would normally be seen in public, even on a French beach. So far, nothing really all that unusual for those trying to make it in the movies.

The interesting thing (apart from their being pictures of a beautiful young woman in the prime of life, something often of interest to most men) is that as was the style then, Demi Moore is untrimmed. In more detail, she has not had a "Brazilian", her pudenda has not been waxed. What is interesting is that those 25 or so years ago, this is what adult women looked like. In fact, without intervention this is what adult women would look like now.

It's over those 25 years that the style, the fashion, has changed markedly. Just as Ms. Moore those years ago shaved her armpits, as most American women did (and most French women might still not), now it is expected that women will shave, wax or somehow or other trim their pubic hair. At least, they will if they are to show it in public in this manner.

That's the change in the social mores: but that interesting question is why? What on earth has happened to make adult women decide that they should look like pre-pubescents? Hair there is, like hair on the chest of a man, a secondary sexual characteristic indicating sexual maturity. Why or how could there have become a social standard that one should not show that one is indeed mature?

This change is not limited to pictures of Hollywood starlets of course: a brief viewing of the history of pornography (something which you humble reporter has undertaken so that you don't have to) shows that exactly the same has happened there. At one point adult women had hair where adult women have hair: a decade later and everyone is clean shaven.

What happened? Surely it can't be just that we remember the 80s as the days of big hair and we've decided not to go back there again? If anyone does know the answer please enlighten the rest of us.

Constitution Day 2009

Posted by Milaan Parmar

Yes, that's the US Constitution. The US Constitution that has been re-interpreted to suit the last few administrations.

George Bush's

1. "No Child Left Behind."

2. "The Patriot Act"

3. "Bailout of AIG"

Obama

1. Health care

2. Stimulus Package

3. Bank, Big business bailouts,

4. Acorn

Come on guys, the US Constitution reveals to American citizens God's guidance for a good country. When the separate divisions of government become weapons of power of one branch over another, it is we the people who pay. We are losing our freedoms, our decency, and our will to achieve a better life.

We are or were a country by the people, for people not the government. The government is supposed to keep us prosperous and safe. That's it!

Let us get our government in line with the US Constitution again. If we were to ask the US Constitution, if any of the listed legacies of the US presidents above were Constitutional the answer would be, "No!"

Shouldn't we be asking our politicians if what they are doing is constitutional on Constitution Day?

Just asking!

Note: It's not just Bush and Obama who are and have trampled our Constitution, but it's a start.

Lab tech Raymond Clark under arrest in the murder of Yale student Annie Le

Posted by Milaan Parmar

A muscular Yale lab technician was arrested and charged with murder Thursday morning in the slaying of grad student Annie Le, authorities said.

Raymond Clark 3rd, his head bowed, was led out of a Super 8 Motel in handcuffs and placed in an unmarked police car about 8:30 a.m. Traffic was halted on two major boulevards outside the Cromwell, Conn., motel as Clark was transported to the New Haven police stationhouse.

His bond was set at $3 million.

"Based on numerous interviews, forensic evidence, and information learned from viewing video surveillance, detectives have secured the arrest warrant for Clark," New Haven Police Chief James Lewis said.

Lewis said Le, 24, was not sexually assaulted. He called her strangulation death a case of "workplace violence," but would not elaborate on what might have triggered the attack.

There are no other suspects, Lewis added.

The New Haven Register reported that authorities have linked DNA from Clark, 24, who worked in the same Yale building as Le, to the murder.

Undercover investigators were massed in the parking lot overnight - and one motorist passing by shouted, "Get him, get him!" at police.

Clark apparently decamped to the motel after cops hauled him from his home in handcuffs Tuesday, obtained DNA samples and let him go.

While police were waiting for DNA results, they had gathered circumstantial evidence.

Clark reportedly failed a lie detector test and had scratch marks on his chest. And computer records from Yale suggested he was the last person to see Le.

Swipe cards Le and Clark used to move through different areas of college buildings showed they were in the same room shortly after 10 a.m. on Sept. 8, The Hartford Courant reported.

Le, 24, wasn't seen alive after that, and her card wasn't used again. But Clark swiped into the area where she was found strangled five days later in a crawlspace, a law enforcement source told the paper.

New Haven Police Chief James Lewis refused to give details of Clark and Le's relationship, saying only that they worked in the same building and passed each other in the halls.

Cops interviewed Clark several times in the days after Le disappeared, but then he stopped talking with detectives and asked for a lawyer.

Clark's lawyer, David Dworski, said yesterday the muscular technician was cooperating with the investigation. "We are committed to proceeding appropriately with authorities with whom we are in regular communication," Dworski said.

State police officers impounded Clark's red Mustang yesterday. They also took about 150 pieces of forensic evidence from the Yale lab, where he mostly did janitorial work.

Le's body was discovered stuffed behind a basement wall inside the lab on Sunday - the same day she had planned to get married on Long Island.

The official cause of her death was ruled as "traumatic asphyxiation due to neck compression."

As cops and Clark played a waiting game last night, new details about his background emerged - including an allegation of forcible sex.

A high school sweetheart told Connecticut cops six years ago that he forced her to have sex, the New Haven Independent reported.

"I feel like I'm 16 all over again," the unidentified woman wrote in recent postings on her Facebook page, the Independent reported. "It's just bringing back everything."

Clark and the young woman attended Branford High School, where he played on the baseball team and was a member of the Asian Awareness Club.

Cops were summoned to the Connecticut school in 2003 after Clark and the girlfriend got into a confrontation.
She told cops "that at one time did force her to have sex with him," a detective wrote in the police report.

The young woman declined to press charges.

Clark's neighbors in Middletown, Conn., were in disbelief that he was at the center of a murder probe.

"He always seemed too quiet," neighbor Rick Tarallo, 23, said. "Other than that, he seemed like a very good guy. He didn't strike me as he was gonna kill somebody. I'm still in shock."

Howard Stern hosts Rodney King and Simon Aouad

Posted by Milaan Parmar

The Howard Stern Show returned from vacation Tuesday morning with 90's police brutality star Rodney King and non-entity Simon "Renegade" Aouad in the studio as the featured guests. Rodney King was in Howard Stern's Sirius XM studio to talk about PCP, sobriety and his upcoming "professional" fight with--of all people--a cop.
Rodney King's main purpose for appearing on The Howard Stern Show was to promote an upcoming fight against former police officer Simon "The Renegade" Aouad. Simon Aouad claims that he was thrown off the police force because he couldn't "follow the rules". Howard Stern acted as the de facto Don King, encouraging trash talk between the two Z-list stars.

"I'm gonna beat you so bad Rodney, you're gonna wish you were in LA" said Simon Aouad limply. Simon Aouad currently makes his money running his parents' pizza business, but also states "I break bones for a living every day."

Rodney King seemed unintimidated by Simon Aouad's threats: "I've trained for this for three months," said Rodney King proudly.

Rodney King gained "celebrity" in 1991 when his beating by Los Angeles police officers set off a citywide riot. King has also worked with friend of The Howard Stern Show Dr. Drew Pinsky when King found sobriety on TV's Celebrity Rehab.

Rodney King will fight Simon Aouad at the Philadelphia Airport Ramada Inn in this Friday night at 7:30PM.

No,...SERIOUSLY

'Melrose Place' recap: Sydney's back, but not for long...

Posted by Milaan Parmar

Only 7 minutes into the new Melrose Place, and there’s already a dead body in the pool. We had high hopes that the rebooted show would build on the ’90s original in terms of trashy, scandalous fun, and this pilot starts with even more of a bang. Murder? Check. Inappropriate sexual tension? Check. Prostitution? Check. Lying and blackmail? Check. Girl-on-girl action? Check.

Things kicked off as a still-radiant Laura Leighton returns to the show as Sydney Andrews, who seemingly faked her own death 11 years ago — with the help of old flame/ex-brother-in-law Michael (the also-returning Thomas Calabro) — before returning to the infamous apartment complex as the landlord and resident cougar. Bad-boy tenant David was her latest prey.

Sydney lured David over for drinks late one night and announced: “Something’s happened. I’ve done something really, really bad.” We’ll have to find out what the bad, bad thing is in flashback, because Sydney was soon the body in the pool. The prime suspect was, who blacked out while drinking with her the night before. He was the first to be questioned by the police, but neighbor and publicist pal Ella lied to give him an alibi.

Now would be a good time to mention that David is Dr. Michael Mancini’s estranged son, and — oh yeah — Syd slept with now-happily-married Michael too. Somehow I think there’s going to be some tense moments on Father’s Day after David proclaimed to Michael: “I kinda freaked out when I found out Syd came after me to get back at you. But when she told me I was better, that made I all worth it.” But then again, maybe they have something to bond over — Michael has his own motive to kill Syd after she threatened to tell his wife about their affair.

A few doors down, Melrose 2.0 offers our new version of Billy, the show’s would-be moral compass, in aspiring filmmaker Jonah, who reminds me of a geeky-but-cool grown-up Seth from The O.C. He started the episode by proposing to his girlfriend of five years, Riley, but didn’t't get the reaction he hoped for (maybe she was unimpressed by the cheesy green-screen shots in his video love letter). Teacher Riley seems stable (read: boring) and eventually said yes to the proposal. Jonah also proved his stability by turning down a chance to fast-track his career by exploiting his tape of a film mogul’s embarrassing liaison with his daughter’s friend.

Still, we fear (or secretly hope?) it might be an rocky engagement for Jonah and Riley. For starters, earnest medical student Lauren told Riley: “You guys are the most perfect couple I know” and that has to be foreshadowing for utter disaster. Also, it seems bisexual Ella directed some lustful looks at Jonah. She consoled herself about their engagement with a lesbian liplock in a bar parking lot, but we’re dying for this new queen bee to stir up big trouble. She’s already a mini Amanda Woodward — she gets the show’s best job, best outfits, best highlights, and certainly the best lines (”I love love, I just hate monogamy”). Can I start the 2010 Emmy campaign for actress Katie Cassidy yet?

Meanwhile, med student Lauren’s dad lost his job and she has to come up with tuition somehow; a cute, rich date offers her $5,000 to sleep with him. She is initially offended but then reconsiders her financial position. (Another thing that might help your medical career, Lauren? Stop taking personal calls every time you’re with a patient! Aren’t cell phones banned in hospitals?)

The only flat characters in the pilot were recovering alcoholic/aspiring chef Augie Kirkpatrick (who comes up with these names!?), who might be getting more interesting as we seem him burning bloody evidence in the final scene, and new resident Violet, played by poor Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, who didn’t have much to work with in this episode. Her “gee-shucks” new-girl-in-town naivete is already growing old. But she does say to Lauren: “You and me, we’re good girls. It’s just not as fun.” You got that right, Violet. Start causing your share of trouble (with Augie?) because Melrose Place certainly isn’t the right address for good girls.

All in all, things are off to a strong start; much more scandalous from the get-go than the rather tame original 1992 first series – juicy characters like Sydney and Amanda didn’t become regulars until later seasons. The vibe is slicker and more up-to-date, with an emo-y soundtrack and references to Twitter and Lady Gaga. One thing remains thankfully the same — the male cast seems to be required to be shirtless as much as possible — even earnest Jonah has been seen barechested in bed and bath scenes and Augie rushed to the pool with button-down conveniently half-off.

I’m hooked already. What about you, PopWatchers? Will you be tuning in to see who killed Sydney, whether or not sweet Jonah turns out to be a cheater, and when Violet inevitably gets corrupted?

America's Got Talent recap

Posted by Milaan Parmar

The last acts took the America’s Got Talent stage and I don't think there was as much talent as we’ve seen prior.
Riding with Recycled Percussion

The evening began with Recycled Percussion. Their theme was the junkyard so they performed on a van which cracked in two -- horizontally -- and played with tons of old car parts and mechanic tools. These guys have the showmanship, but tonight, they were a little to frenetic including an unnecessary smashing of the guitar at the end. I don't know if they were actually playing a song as they did last week, because this week it sounded like nothing but noise. The judges loved them but they're not high on my list.

Lawrence Beamen was up next crooning another deep, soulful melody. This time he went with the modern Alicia Keys tune Fallin' and Piers called him on the song choice and Sharon complained about the vocal styling. I like the song well enough and he does captivate an audience but I don't see him winning all the money.

Hario Torres breaks America's Got Talent upIt was downhill all the way when Erik and Rickie took the stage which was set up like an oversized toy shop. They each started out inside of a tall box and when they busted out they began to moonwalk and that was it for me. They danced to Michael Jackson's Black or White and it looked like they were struggling to get to every phase of the dance. It was stiff and boring and I don't think they should have even made it to this round, so kudos to Piers for buzzing them.

Next up on America's Got Talent was piano impresario Jeffrey Ou and Ou-my, he was a train wreck. He came out dressed like Mozart gone mad then proceeded to bang on the piano in what he claimed was a perfect rendition of the Hungarian Rhapsody. Big mistake. I don't care how good you are, if you want votes you have to play something an audience can recognize. If he wanted to go wild, he should have done a manic version of The William Tell Overture or even Flight of the Bumble Bee. After this performance, Jeffrey OU gets a T and that spells OUT.
Torres tears it up

Things got a whole lot brighter when break-dancer Hairo Torres took the stage. He delivered a prom-themed routine to the Black Eyed Peas tune I Gotta Feeling.

His moves are so unique and so impossible, I literally kept shouting "wow" at my TV. (Much to my husband's annoyance.) Piers said it and I agree that what sets Hairo apart from other break-dancers is his sense of humor. He's a real delight and he makes my top five list.

Hovering near the bottom of my favorite's list are The Eriam Sisters. I know these girls are talented, they have great stage presence and I think Disney should snap them up for their own TV show.

I don't know if they're good enough to win the prize, though. The song choice was When You Believe and it got off to a very shaky start. Once all three sisters starting harmonizing, though, it really came together. Yes, they deserve their own show, just not in Vegas. (Maybe Rickie and Erik can guest star.)
Mario may be excited, but will he continue on America's Got TalentMario’s mundane

Mario and Jenny were next on the bill and for once I actually listened to their interesting backstory. Turns out Mario comes from seven generations of circus folk so no wonder he's such a showman -- oh wait -- not tonight. The guy who we saw juggle chainsaws and flaming guitars came out dancing. Yes, dancing and not well. Actually, he came out before that juggling some little pink balls but I didn't even notice him until several seconds into the act. That's not good. David and Sharon both said it was nice to see another side of his personality but again I'm with Piers. While this interlude might work in a full 75-minute show, as a stand alone piece, it was boring at best.

Fairing no better were the street dancers known as FootworKINGz. Their Power Rangers routine was out-dated, poorly choreographed and even silly in spots. Piers said they went from being the coolest act in the show to being the un-coolest -- bad choice boys, bad choice.

I'm fence sitting on the next act, which was singer Drew Stevyns. He performed an angry, growling version of the George Michael tune Careless Whisper. I wasn't bowled over by the performance but this guy has something. I don't think it's Las Vegas headliner something, but I'd love to see him on American Idol.
Padilla’s a powerhouse

The producers saved the best for last, giving opera singer Barbara Padilla the final spot. She appeared in a gold gown with a train that spread out for miles.

Barbara Padilla rocks the housePadilla was standing on a stack of pedestals that made her look very much like an Oscar statuette.

She looked younger, too. Calmer. Then she sang Ave Maria and it brought the audience to tears and to their feet. Sharon made a comment about Barbara having a voice that could heal people and I believe it. A cancer survivor herself, I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear that she brought people back from the brink with her angelic voice. I don't usually vote for singers to win America's Got Talent but I'm making an exception in this case. She gets all ten of my votes for the night.

The America's Got Talent top five? Barbara Padilla for sure, Hairo Torres, Drew Stevyns, Mario and Jenny (because they're better than tonight's performance) and Recycled Percussion I guess, since I can see them on a Vegas stage.

Agree or disagree? Who do you think should make it into the finals?

You'll see the results on America's Got Talent tonight at 9:00 on NBC.

President Obama school speech to students

Posted by Milaan Parmar

President Obama spoke to students across the nation today in a controversial school speech. You may watch the full video in the player below as well as see photos from the speech in the accompanying slideshow. Politics weren’t on the President’s agenda today. The bulk of the President’s message was focused on children developing their talents and intellect so that they will be adequately prepared to lead the next generation.

Many schools across the nation chose not to show the speech, and earlier today, the Associated Press reported that a small group of protestors stood outside of Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia to picket. Some principals who chose not to show the President’s school speech stated that they felt the speech was simply too divisive. With a great number of conservative parents and Republicans objecting to the speech and fearing that suggested lesson plans would indoctrinate students, the controversy is far from over.

An interesting fact that CNN reported earlier today, was that many of the schools that didn’t air the school speech were in districts that supported John McCain during the elections. Though that shouldn’t come as any surprise, it does shed light that the debate may not have been focused solely on the lesson plan that was subsequently reworded, but rather on the speech being delivered by President Obama himself.

Strange, but it used to be that people respected the President, as well as his office. If the President was invited to come to these schools, would they open the doors and let him in?
There used to be a time when children were excited to have the President come to their school. Undoubtedly, the children at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia were more than welcoming to President Obama and his speech.

Miss Cougar USA Crowned

miss cougar usa Miss Cougar USA CrownedCougar lovers rejoice! The National Single Cougars Convention was held in Palo Alto, California last month.

The big gala began with cocktails and appetizers, served by Trader Vic’s, as well as presentations from various booth sponsors.

Francesca Gentille, an author, and Tahil Gesyuk, her love interest who is 14 years younger, addressed a room of almost 60 “cougars”. The topic? Relationships with younger men, of course.

After the presentation, the Cougar Ball took place with more than 100 “cubs” (younger men) who were there to mingle with the singles.

The highlight of the night was the crowning of the very first Miss Cougar USA. That prestigious honor went to Gloria Navarro of Redwood Shores. Next year, we might have to check this one out first-hand. :-)

Race Across the Sky

Leadville Trail 100 – Race Across the Sky
Last weekend, I lined up at the start line of the Leadville 100, the highest altitude and biggest endurance mountain bike race there is. Over 1500 people, including Lance Armstrong, lined up for the event in the frigid, wee hours of the morning at 10,200 ft. I traveled to the race with Mike Sinyard from Specialized, Blair Clark from Smith Optics and a few other friends from Idaho. We were all Leadville virgins, so I relied heavily on course information from other athletes and the race website. I knew the course was primarily fire roads, so I chose to ride my brand new Specialized S-works 29er hard tail for this event. It was a bit of a whirlwind getting the bike and myself sorted to race so soon after coming home from 24 hour World Championships, but I did not want to pass up the opportunity to compete in the Leadville 100. It’s a legendary event, but I did have some major trepidation about how I would perform at such high altitude so soon after a grueling 24-hour solo effort. It normally takes me at least four weeks to feel right again after a 24, and I was sitting right on three weeks for the Leadville start. I spent the 3 weeks in between Worlds and Leadville riding the fine line between recovering, healing my body and trying to milk the season’s peak to last a bit longer than originally planned.
rusch100.2
My coach Matthew was once again able to pull a rabbit out of a hat and keep the elusive peak going for an extra few weeks. It’s intoxicating to peak for an event and feel as if the race is almost easy. However, the weeks, months, years leading up to that peak are nothing but suffering, hard work and insecurity about your fitness. After events like Leadville 100 and 24 Hour Worlds where it all comes together on the right day, it’s impossible not to be seduced by that feeling and want it over and over again at every single race. However, fitness peaks cannot last the whole season and what goes up must come down so that it can go back up again. It’s a frustrating process, but oh so sweet when it comes together.

Leadville was one such occasion where everything fell into place beautifully. I was not sure of my participation until just five days before the race. At that point, I scrambled to get hotel, flight and logistics sorted. I also had to get my new Specialized 29er race ready. I’ve packed my gear enough times before and I got myself to the very early morning start on Saturday. The town of Leadville sits at 10,200 ft and the weather Friday and Saturday was cold and dismal.

I was flattered to be invited to line up on the front line with all of the big name athletes and past winners of the race. I had not seen a start list for the women’s field, so I was unaware of whom I was racing against. The shotgun start was fairly civilized with a neutral roll out for a few miles until we hit the dirt road and started climbing. I felt the mass of 1500 people behind me and just concentrated on staying near the front pack and staying upright. There are five major climbs on this course and the total ascent is about 13,000 feet over the course of 103 miles. I looked at some past women’s times and used that as a gauge for myself. With the help of another athlete, I put together a race profile with time estimates, distances of climbs and elevations. I taped this mini course map to my top tube and relied on it heavily during the race to keep track of how I was doing.

I led the women’s race from the start. I was not getting time splits, so I was unaware of what sort of gap I might have established. I assumed that someone was probably right on my tail and kept the pressure on the whole race. I imagined that every guy in front of me was a woman and tried to keep catching people. The crowds were insane and they cheered wildly when they saw I was the first female. The first ½ of the race was bitter cold, freezing rain and even sleet. I was barely able to shift or hold the handlebars and had to stop to put on shell gloves. Thankfully I was prepared with a thin jacket, arm warmers, shell gloves and a Buff for my head. I didn’t put the extra clothing on, but was somewhat comforted to have it with me. Instead, I just kept riding harder and pushing the pedals in an attempt to stay warm.
rusch100
Columbine Mine at 12,500 feet is the 50-mile turnaround and the high point of the race. There is a 3000 foot, 7 mile climb to get up there. The course is an out and back format, so as I was climbing up, I got to see Lance Armstrong, Dave Wiens and the rest of the top men come flying downhill. As I reached the turnaround, the cold rain turned to stinging sleet. Descending Columbine was my one and only chance to see how close the next female was. I looked at my Suunto watch at the top of the climb and tried to look for women in the crowds going uphill. It was a tricky descent with loose rocks, rain ruts and 1500 people all coming up the same way, so looking at the other riders was difficult. I was freezing and focused on going fast downhill, but not crashing. I got a quick glimpse of Amanda Riley Carey who was in 2nd place. At that point, she was probably 15 minutes behind me, but I still had 50 miles to go and plenty more opportunity for flat tires or other problems. I made it down Columbine safely and that meant a big road flat, windy road section and two more monster climbs left in the race.

I was feeling decent, but the cold was making my legs cramp. I took some Endurolytes and tried to make an effort to finish my water. My motivation was elevated every time I went through an aid station by the thousands of people cheering and ringing cowbells. This was by far the biggest turnout I’ve ever seen for a mountain bike race and I felt like I was in the Tour de France as I rode through lines of people crowding the course. I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face as they were all cheering.

The hardest climb of the course is the Powerline climb at mile 80. I had to walk the steepest portions of it, but was still keeping up with the guys around me. A little group of about four of us had formed and we were silently riding together with only the sound of our heavy breathing and a few words of encouragement between us. Misery loves company, so it was nice to have a little support out there on the hard parts of the course.

After the last big climb, I was smelling the barn and the numbers on my odometer were very near triple digits, so I shifted into the biggest gear I could push and left my little group of guys as I motored toward the finish. The last few miles ticked by very slowly, and the course is actually 103 miles!

The final road stretch into Leadville was a welcomed site. I had ridden this short stretch on Friday and visualized myself finishing the race. You can see the finish for about a ½ mile and it’s the sweetest site with the finish banner, the only stoplight in Leadville and so many people lining the streets. I got one little scare as I crested the very last hill and saw someone in front of me with curly blonde hair and a pink jersey. From the back and in my oxygen-deprived state I was not sure if it was a male or female rider. As I was rolling toward the finish I nervously asked one of the bystanders if the person in front of me was a guy. Thankfully, he was and I could roll into the finish line with my arms up and a huge sense of accomplishment in my heart.

It was one of the most exciting race finishes I have ever experienced. I finished in a time of 8:14 and was 30th place overall. The next female rider was 25 minutes behind me. At the finish, the sound of the crowd was deafening and exhilarating. I was immediately given flowers, a medal, hugs, and whisked off to the media room for an interview. In the interview, I was in a bit of shock to quickly try to re-live the moments of the race.
rusch100.3
After a quick shower, I went back out onto 6th street to watch my friends finish and be part of the whole crazy scene. At this point the sun had finally come out and the freezing rain from Columbine was a distant memory. I couldn’t help but cheer for other finishers and smile as their families and friends hugged them.

Sunday morning awards were chaotic and extremely entertaining. All 953 official finishers received a sweatshirt with their name and finishing time printed on the sleeve. It was finally warm and sunny and so many people were milling around sharing race stories. I saw a lot of old friends and had multiple strangers come up and congratulate me. Obviously, the highlight was the awards ceremony where I got to share the podium with Lance Armstrong and Dave Wiens.

They both had the same sentiment about the race that I did. The sheer number people who came out to race and to cheer provided an intoxicating vibe that just made you happy to be riding your bike. The Leadville 100 was definitely one of the most organized races I’ve done and one of the most spirited. It’s a unique combination of a huge race with a hometown feel. It was honor to be among such strong athletes and to stand at the top of the podium with a legend. It is a day that I will not soon forget and a wonderful cap to an already incredible race season!

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice on the course, cheered for me, sent me photos and gave me motivation along the way. Thanks to Red Bull and Specialized for getting me to the start line!

Ashley Dupre Prostitutes Herself for Music Career Publicity

Posted by Milaan Parmar

The New York Post's plan to resurrect the Eliot Spitzer hooker scandal story is turning out fabulously. Day one was the "Spitzer comeback?" rumor. Day two was the Shocked Response. Now, day three: Ashley Dupre makes her return. Musically, too!

What did we tell you about this, Ashley? If you had followed our advice you would have already built your trashy faux-media empire and stacked enough cash to drop out of the public eye forever by now, via porn. We told you specifically to give up the music. Your music sucks. But what do we see, today? You, writing on a blog, for free, playing right into the hands of the bloodsucking tabloids, and plugging another god damn song!

People think I made money off music that was exploited when the scandal first broke, that I am doing reality television, and that I made millions posing nude for magazines... I never sold any photos of myself - but people who I trusted did. And the "millions" for the nude pics? I was offered that, repeatedly – and turned them down because I didn't want to perpetuate the problem or feed into the stereotype.

We know, that's the problem! You could be rich by now! Look, Ashley, the fact is that you are right, morally. You are doing the right thing to retain your humanity. But then you let the devil, in the form of the New York Post, sneak in through the back door because you think it will help your music career, of all things. Not only did you start "speaking out" right on schedule for the tabloid, but they also ran your entire Global Grind blog post in the paper, and did a review of your new song. We're not saying you struck some sort of deal with them, but if you did, you got conned. The tabloids will cover whatever you do no matter what. Your reputation is not going to change substantially. And you will never get rich off music—because, as we mentioned, your music sucks (but not in a lucrative way).

So sell out like the evil world wants you to, or just fade into obscurity. One's good for your soul. The other's good for your wallet. Playing footsie with the Post will only lead you off the cliff. Trust us here. We are your friend.

OU's Gresham has cartilage damage, won't play against BYU

Posted by Milaan Parmar

Oklahoma All-America tight end Jermaine Gresham has cartilage damage to his right knee and will not play Saturday against BYU, but the extent and treatment of the injury are currently uncertain.

According to a press release today from the university, the "evaluation process is continuing" regarding Gresham's playing status this season.

Rumors began swirling Wednesday night, and Internet message boards became clogged with thousands of posts into the early morning hours.

It's not known when or how the injury occurred. Gresham was seen by reporters on Tuesday night after practice, still in full pads, looking at pictures of former teammates hanging in a hallway of the team's renovated Switzer Center.

OU offensive Kevin Wilson will have Trent Ratterree and James Hanna listed on the depth chart at tight end, according to the press release from OU.

Gresham is a senior from Ardmore who returned for his final season at OU instead of testing the NFL waters, where many analysts think he would have been a first-round draft pick last April.

Gresham is the Sooners' leading receiver from 2008's record-setting offense. He caught 66 passes for 950 yards and 14 touchdowns last season.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

2009 Deutsche Bank Championship Picks

Posted by Milaan Parmar

Round two of the FedEx Cup Playoffs is next, with the Deutsche Bank Championship. It’s an odd Friday to Monday event, which came at a great time for me since I’ve been traveling and needed the extra day to get this masterpiece together.

The Deutsche Bank has been played since 2003, at the TPC Boston in Norton, MA. For past results, and a bit of data crunching to find best performers, please see my research page.

Before I give my picks, let me just say, please don’t yell at me for the big names on the list. It’s the Playoffs, and the fields are getting small, and sometimes it’s just not plausible to have a whole slew of darkhorses. Still, I’ve included a few names with longer odds, and as usual I’m not including Tiger because that would be too easy. So here you go, my list of 10 players to watch at this week’s Deutsche Bank Championship:

Robert Allenby: A great record at this event: 8th ’07, T4 ’06, T15 ’05, T19 ’03. And he’s playing well right now, with T2, T24, T15 in his last three events.

Jonathan Byrd: Byrd has some success at this course, with T23 ’07 and T13 ’03. He’s playing solid, reliable golf—in his last 14 starts, he has eight top-25s and only one missed cut.

Ernie Els: Els has a T3 here in ’08, but more importantly he’s playing great golf right now: four top-10s in his last six events, which includes a T6 and T2 in his last two.

Padraig Harrington: Harrington is too hot right now to ignore: T2, T10, T2 in his last three events.

Fredrik Jacobson: A T9 here in ’08 shows he can score on this course. He’s a inconsistent, streaky golfer, currently in the middle of a good streak: T17, T6 in his last two events.

Ian Poulter: Poulter seems just about back into top form, with T15, T19, T9 in his last three starts.

Justin Rose: Rose has success here at the Deutsche Bank, with T4 ’06 and 3rd ’03. He has underperformed this year, but he’s coming off a T5 and T41 in his last two starts that shows promise.

Steve Stricker: One of the big names this week, of course. Stricker at this event has a T13 ’08, T9 ’07, and T7 ’06. And we all know about the year he’s having, with two wins, two 2nds, one 3rd, and coming off a T2 at last week’s Barclays.

Nick Watney: Watney had a fantastic start to the year but then cooled down—I’m hoping that last week’s T6 at the Barclays is a sign he’s ready to heat up again.

Y.E. Yang: Why not? Yang has three top-10s in his last five events, including of course the amazing takedown of Tiger at the PGA Championship. It impressed me that he followed up that career-changing victory with a solid T20 at the Barclays; I’m expecting another good week from Yang.

Lefty Watch: Five lefties in the field this week: Greg Chalmers, Phil Mickelson, Nick O’Hern, Bubba Watson, Mike Weir. Go lefties.

Rihanna Italian Vogue photos and video

Posted by Milaan Parmar

The Rihanna Italian Vogue photo shoot is taking the world by storm, but not only for the racy images, but for the meaning behind the photos. You can see photos from the quickly going viral ‘Rihanna Italian Vogue’ photo shoot in the video below. The photos show Rihanna in bondage and half clothed, but is this more than an Italian photographer’s depiction of art, or does it send a message regarding Rihanna’s recent assault from her ex-boyfriend, Chris Brown. The photos themselves are racy, but when you consider that they are from Italian Vogue, the shock lessens. Italian Vogue, as well as other European based fashion magazines often portray racy, semi-nude, and sexually suggestive images. Is there really anything ‘behind the scenes’ in these photos?

It’s also interesting to note that on Wednesday, September 2, 2009, Chris Brown spoke with Larry King about his recent assault and conviction on the Barbados beauty and singer. During that interview, Chris Brown alleged that he didn’t remember assaulting Rihanna, but he did admit to losing his temper in the heated moments while arguing. Chris Brown also stated that he pled guilty to felony assault. When asked if he still loved Rihanna he replied yes.

Many people are outraged that Chris Brown avoided jail time. He plead guilty on June 22, 2009, and the deal ensured that he would avoid jail. He was additionally sentenced to five years of probation and six months of community service. There is a protective order in place making certain that Chris Brown has no contact with Rihanna.

After the assault, Rihanna began sporting a new tattoo, causing more to speculate if the choice of a gun was meant to empower herself. Along with the Italian Vogue photos, the new haircut, and tattoos, we can be sure that the spotlight will continue to follow Chris Brown and Rihanna as they go their separate ways. As for the photos, well, they are the closest thing to Rihanna that Chris Brown is going to get for a long time.

Obama speech to schools | Obama speech | Obama speech to kids | Obama speech to children | Obama education speech

Posted by Milaan Parmar

Obama speaks to an audience.

President Barack Obama's plans for a televised back-to-school address to students next week are drawing fire from some conservatives, who say he's just trying to indoctrinate them to his political beliefs.

In the Sept. 8 speech, Obama will challenge students to work hard, set goals for their education and take responsibility for their learning, Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a letter to principals.

The Education Department is encouraging teachers to create lesson plans around the speech, using materials provided on the department website that urge students to learn about Obama and other presidents.

"He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens," Duncan said in a press release.

But already, some conservatives are crying foul. The chairman of the Florida Republican Party is condemning Obama's speech as an attempt to "indoctrinate America's children to his socialist agenda."

"The idea that school children across our nation will be forced to watch the President justify his plans for government-run health care, banks, and automobile companies, increasing taxes on those who create jobs, and racking up more debt than any other President, is not only infuriating, but goes against beliefs of the majority of Americans, while bypassing American parents through an invasive abuse of power," Chairman Jim Greer said in a press release.

Added conservative talk show host Tammy Bruce, in a Twitter feed: "Make September 8 Parentally Approved Skip Day. You are your child's moral tutor, not that shady lawyer from Chicago." And conservative author Michelle Malkin said the lesson plans have a "heavy activist bent."

Texas school districts are discussing whether the president's speech will be shown — some districts are leaving it up to individual teachers with an opt out for parents who don't want their children to view the speech, according to the Houston Chronicle.

In his letter to principals, Duncan said viewing of the speech is encouraged, not mandatory. It's the first time a president has ever given a speech addressed directly to students.

Man Slaps Child in Walmart, Charged With Felony Cruelty

Man slaps child

A Walmart shopper allegedly slapped a 2-year-old girl several times because she wouldn't stop crying.

The incident happened Monday at the Walmart store near Atlanta, Georgia. A little girl and her mother were shopping when she began crying.

Roger Stephens, 61, walked up to the mother and allegedly said, "If you don't shut the baby up, I will shut her up for you."

A few moments later, Stephens allegedly grabbed the girl and slapped her four times, then told the mother, "See, I told you I would shut her up."

Stephens was stopped by another shopper and security was called. He was arrested and charged with cruelty with children in the first degree, which is a felony. He is being held without bond.

Obama ‘Pledge’ Video Upsets Parents

Parents upset over ‘leftist propaganda’ video

Education » Principal apologizes for showing ‘I Pledge’ to students.

A school principal has apologized for showing a video at an assembly that a politically conservative group leader is calling "radical, leftist propaganda."

Children at Eagle Bay Elementary School in Farmington were shown a short video called "I pledge" on Aug. 28. The video opens with an image of President Barack Obama and part of a speech in which he says, "Let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other." The video then features celebrities making pledges about how they will help the president and the world — and that’s where some say the problem lies…

"Showing the video in a public school is completely inappropriate," said Jennifer Cieslewicz, whose daughter is a first-grader at the school. "I don’t believe a video such as this that promotes certain values should be shown to elementary students, especially without parents being aware. "

Chris Williams, Davis School District spokesman, said school principal Ofelia Wade and school PTA leaders decided to show the video as part of an assembly about the school’s theme for the year, service. He said the PTA board chose the video and Wade did not see it before it was shown in the assembly.

"It got to a point where she turned to her assistant and said, ‘Oops, I wish I would have seen this before. I don’t think I would have shown it,’ " Williams said. He said Wade could see how some adults might find the video political.

"She acknowledges she was wrong and apologizes for it and says she’s sorry," Williams said. Attempts to reach school PTA leaders Tuesday evening were unsuccessful.

Williams said Wade plans to send a letter home to parents Wednesday about the issue.

Gayle Ruzicka, president of conservative Utah Eagle Forum, said the video was blatantly political. She said other offensive pledges included, "I pledge to be of service to Barack Obama," "I pledge allegiance to the funk, to the united funk of funkadelica," and pledges to not use plastic grocery bags and not flush the toilet after urinating.

"It’s very inappropriate to show a radical, leftist propaganda piece that political to children," Ruzicka said. "If parents want their children to learn about those things and do them in the home, wonderful, fine, but it’s not the place of the school to show a one-sided propaganda piece to children without parents knowing about it."

Cieslewicz said such values should be decided in the home, not at school.

"They shouldn’t be troubling our youth with the woes of the world and making them feel like we’re in slavery or they have to worry about how many times they flush the toilet or if they have a plastic water bottle," Cieslewicz said, referring to pledges in the video to "end slavery."

Ruzicka said she contacted local media about the video after receiving complaints from several parents. Ruzicka said she worried the video’s messages would confuse children whose parents might choose to use plastic bags when shopping or who want their children to flush the toilet after every use.
